Launch Monitor Subscriptions Explained: What You Pay After You Buy

Personal launch monitors run the gamut with pricing and features, which we’ve highlighted throughout the years. Whether you’re spending $500 or $5,000 on one of these accessories, you may face an additional cost once you open the box: a launch monitor subscription.

Not all monitors require a post-purchase subscription and many make it an option so you can access additional data. Then you have numerous models where one is required. So what exactly are you paying for, whether it’s optional or a requirement?

What a typical launch monitor subscription includes

While details vary by brand, most launch monitor subscriptions include some mix of expanded data access, software features and long-term usability upgrades.

The most common upgrade is additional ball and club data. A base package may offer ball speed, carry distance and launch angle. Upgraded subscriptions (depending on the model) may unlock spin rates, dispersion, club path and launch angle. If you live for golf stats, this can be the difference between casual feedback and meaningful analysis of your golf game.

Optional subscriptions, such as the E6 Connect plans with Flightscope’s Mevo Gen2, unlock more courses and content each month. While you can get quite a bit out of the Mevo Gen2 on its own, the courses you want to play the most may be available only through the add-on subscription.

Launch monitor subscription costs

In 2025, we tested personal launch monitors and found our top picks based on a variety of data points. Of the top picks, only one required a subscription (the Rapsodo) but most others offered upgrades via a subscription.

Many models technically offer “out-of-the-box” use but getting the full experience and use out of the monitor may require an additional purchase.

Launch monitorSubscription required?Cost
Garmin Approach R50Optional$99.99 annual
Foresight Sports GC3NoN/A
FlightScope Mevo Gen2OptionalPackages ranging from $4.99/month to $600 annual
Rapsodo MLM2PROYes, to unlock critical data$119.99 annual
Garmin Approach R10Optional$99.99 annual

Do you need a launch monitor subscription?

If you’ve spent hundreds or even thousands on a launch monitor, paying for an add-on subscription can feel like rubbing salt into an expensive wound. As painful as that may be, you may find many of the most attractive benefits live in the software.

Some launch monitor companies may use subscriptions so they can tier their offerings. Entry-level users may get basic ball data included while more advanced metrics and simulation tools are locked behind a paid plan.

No matter which launch monitor you’re considering, make sure you review what subscription it offers or requires. You may not be able to unlock your most wanted features without adding a hefty sum to the purchase.

Ultimately, you’ll have to decide how much data you really need and whether unlocking it is worth paying for it year after year.

There’s a book out there called, “You’ll Own Nothing and Be Happy” With regards to Launch Monitors, it seems to be completely apropos.

I’d pay a premium for Rapsodo MLM2-level accuracy with no subscription and no app of their own, with the device just outputting numbers in a standardized format that any third party software of my choosing could use. But every greedy MBA parasite demands everything be a subscription now, so we can’t have nice things.

Foresight GC3 requires a $500 annual subscription. It’s only free for the first year

MyGolfSpy ranked the Foresight GC3 as the best runner up launch monitor, with the exact same score as the R50 (9.8). This article should have mentioned that the CG3S subscription rate for equivalent features is between $500-$750 PER YEAR FOR LIFE!

Not happy with the R10 and its new upgraded courses, they look like the old courses and the monitor does a crap job of detecting drivers in general, started using a 2 iron for tee shots and all they did was roll along the ground, I think when it works the data is good, but the new “app” still sucks

I think my biggest gripe with the launch monitor subscriptions are the ones that put additional data behind a paywall, its a sleezy used car sales tactic. Its like having a radio in your car but you have to pay extra to unlock Bluetooth. I get subscriptions to use additional courses and games but additional cost for data that is already measured pisses me off.
