Dear Reader,
News

Dear Reader,

Dear Reader,

Dear Reader,

The reason I started MyGolfSpy is because golf magazines were always telling you and me the exact same story.

The story was…every new club that came out was better than the last. Those ads made me sick. They made me sick because they weren’t true. Unlike other industries there were no checks and balances in golf. They could and did say whatever they wanted and the consumer believed them.  NO fact checking, just the same claims. This infuriated me, as I watched you, the golfer, continuously get duped.

When I started the process of testing golf equipment, it proved lots of these claims were a bunch of BS. You can imagine, these big golf companies didn’t like your access to factual information. They continuously tried to take down MYGOLFSPY: legal letters, harassing phone calls, even some inside attacks on the site.

With your help, the industry is changing. Facts are finally becoming more important than advertisements. Testing reigns over claims.  Let’s keep it that way.  To make sure we do that, let’s keep pushing. You are what allows us to get where we can get. You are the reason we do what we do. It’s up to you.

Our mission isn’t over, let’s keep this information open for the foreseeable future and for all golfers.

By supporting our unbiased testing we can do just that.

Sincerely,
Adam Beach

Don’t try to do too much, what you have been doing has been great as evidenced by the responses. Many companies went under or lost their edge when they tried to expand and be all things to everyone. Almost all my purchases have been your most desired or best of the group and have been satisfied with all my purchases. Having said that I too would like to see previous year’s best compared to the current year’s best.

You guys have done a great job at comparing current year models against each other (i.e. all 2019 drivers against each other) but I would love to see YoY model comparison data (i.e. the ST180 vs ST190 vs ST200 driver data or M1 to M6 data). I imagine you would need to have the same test subject using all yearly models. This would definitely help answer your vision of knowing if OEMs are really making significant improvements or just using marketing words like Twist Face, etc. to fool consumers.

Personally, I think the golf equipment industry is one of the biggest scams in sports. NEW / BETTER / UPGRADED equipment every year? Really? From an amateurs point of view, is the Mavrik that much better than the Epic Flash? Is 5 more yards worth it? This year’s model is $500. Last year’s, ,just as good, is all of a sudden, not as good for $250.
How often is there a REAL upgrade in drivers, irons, or other equipment?
It’s a new shiny toy, but is the average golfer going to get noticeably better?

I have really enjoyed all the in depth testing of Golf products that MYGOLFSPY does during the year. I have given up all the major golf publications (GOLF, Golf Digest) that I subscribed to in the past:. You have the option to get into the weeds as far as stats as you want. I enjoy the no B.S. approach to equipment., and have purchased several clubs that have been tested and proven on the site..
THANKS for all the good work, and share thus site with all your golf buddies…..

I think the testing work you guys do is great, although it isn’t for me. At my age and ability, no $500 club is going to make me anymore that what I already am. A weekend amateur that plays the game to get outside, exercise, camaraderie. I post a score and have lunch. Some weekends a few more putts might drop, lots of others they don’t! What I don’t like is the fact that for most amateur and weekend golfers, all these testing results are meaningless. What works for some, may not work for others regardless of all the testing and the clubs. Although you many use a sample of test subjects, the average golfer may not fit into any of these categories. The second issue is the average weekend golfer cannot hit a $500 driver any better than a model 2 or 3 years ago that is in the sale bin for $150. Do Pro golfers buy clubs off the rack? Of course not. So how could MGS recommend off the rack clubs when they are not good enough for the pro’s? Lot’s of Pro’s use shafts that cost (for 1) as much as a whole set of irons for an amateur. We see OEM’s adverting new drivers with the same name shaft, that are actually cheap production line shafts that are no where near the same as a Pro shaft. MGS should divide up into Amateur weekend golfers, seniors, hackers, etc. and then a second category of those that are younger, stronger, low HC,, swing speeds and strength in the stratosphere., with an ambition to be something more that a weekend warrior. Way to much time spent analyzing every new club, regardless of cost. How many weekend golfers are going to put together a bag of everything you recommend at $2,000 to play every once in a while? Weekend golfers, seniors, hackers, get out to enjoy the outdoors, exercise, camaraderie with friends or family. No one cares if you hit a driver 10 or 20 yards further. The mass majority of golfers are amateurs that play once in a while. MGS does nothing to address the majority of these golfers, instead hinging on the latest $500+ club that will perform miracles for a 25 HC. I personally have tried all the big names across the board and never, never, never had a club changed my performance radically or made me a better golfer. if you are an amateur and a high handicapper, it is because you don’t have 80 hours a week to devote to practice, training, playing. Certain people, due to age and skill, $500 clubs are not going to help one bit.
MGS is rating all the new clubs that come out for sale off the rack. There hasn’t been a Pro since day 1, that went to a store and bought a set of clubs and shot -20 under. Playing a round years ago with Sam Snead, the one thing he told me was if you find a club that works FOR YOU, keep it because no 2 clubs will ever be the same. Production clubs that come off the rack have no guarantee they will work for you. Fitting is a whole different story.

I have a the same question as well. I’m not sure why they are asking for donations. I’m happy to contribute—but I’d like to know: Is MGS a non-profit/not-for-profit organization? Is it for profit?

Does the donation amount to something along the lines of subscribing, becoming a member, etc? Is there a reason why donations are asked for, instead of offering tiered membership? Again, I’m read MGS regularly, I appreciate the information the writers offer. I’d just like a to better understand the request for donations.

      Howdy gents,
MGS is a for profit company, but offer their info for free. They request donations to help fund the things that they do. The golf companies mostly donate equipment for testing, but MGS still needs to raise money to help cover the cost of equipment that does not get donated, pay employees , pay for their testing facility, website and cost of operations. The do take advertising money from the small companies if they believe in the product.
Website/forum memberships are free and they hope that you feel the info is valuable enough to you to possibly make a donation, they don’t use a subscription model.

BAM! Just donated to the cause fellas. I started visiting your website last year and was blown away by the honesty and quality of the articles. Keep on making the golf industry accountable for how they market their products., and what nonsense they spew to the golfing consumers. Now I want to see a Most Wanted test of all the winners from past years in each category to the current year to see how the clubs throughout the years stack up to each other. Keep doing what you’re doing, and I’ll keep throwing cash your way to help.

I definitely donated, everyone should that visits your website on a consistent basis. There is MSG and no one else, so donating even $25 is a small price to pay for the amount of information gained from your site. How can someone read all the information on your site to decide what $500 driver to buy, but not contribute a small 5% ($25 of $500). Always appreciate the honest and thorough analysis and testing your group does. Its a complicated sport with many moving parts, but MGS does an outstanding job of presenting the facts with unbiased testing. This at least gives us a chance to make an educated decision on what is best for our game, or they at a minimum give us the information to form our own opinions whether you agree or not with MSG. Thanks again MSG!

Thank you MGS, you’ve been doing us all a great service in bringing us a completely different means of evaluating and choosing golf equipment.. The MGS equipment reviews are my primary source for obtaining information on both my new and used. golf acquisitions.. Even if I don’t go with the top pick, I am certainly looking at the list carefully to narrow down my best options. Once I get my hands on the new gear, I then compare my testing experiences to see if they are similar to the MGS reports.

The reporting Is relevant and entertaining and most of the comments are informative and entertaining too. Please don’t go “G” rating this site. either, it’s for adult golfers., and as we all know you can’t please em all. And for those who need the “clean” reviews, go look on the news racks, they’re full of golf magazines that are safe for consumption for all ages and sensitivity levels.

I cannot begin to imagine what it must take to keep up with all the newest equipment, let alone testing and reporting on them. I fantasize what fun it would be to receive all of the latest equipment, but I sense it’s much like making sausage, I probably don’t really want to see what goes into running MGS. You’re doing fabulous work. Thanks again. Keep going. This game just keeps getting more and more interesting and fascinating, and you’ve been a big part of my enjoyment. .

I just hit the paypal send button as a vote of confidence and appreciation.

      Cheers and Blessings MGS.

Love to see a little article showing some ads from say 1999 to 2018 so everyone one can be reminded what they heard before and what ever happened to those great clubs?? Face it most of the big OEM’s come up with a head design, run so many, destroy the master mold and turn around make a new master mold, change the name, paint shaft model and here you go again. Safe bet 50% or more of any improvement is in the players head…

The Golf Digest Equipment issue is a joke. 45% of their rating is based on some unknown performance metrics. 30% on “innovation” via interviews with their “technical panel”. 20% on “looks, sound and feel”; which is a joke. And finally 5% on “demand”. So basically the ratings are based on less than half of the most important thing in choosing a golf club; performance. By their rating method the famous Ping Eye 2 irons would not have been very impressive since they were ugly a sin.

I can get that at my club or the bar ! Bring us upbeat, new and useful content (which you mostly do)

I also agree with earlier comment, give only basic info to non donators, and save the good intel for those of us that pay. Good motivation for more donations! Would also be curious what the total contributions are, from readers, as well as corporate donations (if you accept them) against what operating budget ?

Adam is smart guy who seems to be passionate about this work which can overwhelm his intellect and result in some excessive venom. Still like it better than the pablum peddled by the golf industry.

Having worked for an OEM for over six years doing “Demo Days”, it was somewhat difficult to spout the latest “company line” about the new XYZ driver or irons that are longer, easier to hit, more accurate, yada, yada, yada.

In all fairness, some of the new equipment IS better than previous models but NOT every new offering can say that. In most cases, it isn’t, in my view. How much farther can one hit new drivers given the USGA limitations. Yes, shaft technology is ever changing and certainly can influence ball flight but c’mon.

I subscribe to Golf Digest, and I’m always “amazed” when I read the equipment issue. They appear to go through a lot of trouble to “test” the equipment, and yet every review/summary sounds exactly the same. It’s useful as a list of what top OEMs have on release, but there is not a single word that can really be used to help you compare one product to another. I get it. Those OEMs buy ads and that is what pays for the magazine. Over the year I find useful land entertaining things in Golf Digest, but equipment reviews will never be something it does well.

As one of two Forum Directors, the forum testing is one of my main responsibilities. We offered over 20 great opportunities for our members last year and believe 2020 will be even better.

First and foremost you need to be a registered member of the forum. You can do that by clicking the Forums tab at the top of this page and following the instructions.

Secondly READ THIS POST, it explains in detail about testing and international members. https://forum.mygolfspy.com/topic/23886-re-international-testing-do-not-apply-within/

Finally, you can follow me @Golfspy_CG2 on Twitter to keep informed about all testings that are posted on the main forum and other relevant golf news and MyGolfSpy happenings.

We love it when the OEM’s open the testings to international members, so hopefully you’ll join the forum and keep looking out.
