Never Compromise Gambler Series Putters

Remember when Never Compromise putters first hit the scene back in the late 90’s?  You remember…they came out about the same time as those Bald Eagle golf balls. Anyways those gray and black 3-Piece putters were everywhere!  But then…pooof…they vanished.  Since that time they tried to re-establish the brand quite a few times but never really seemed to grab the markets attention as well as they did coming out of the gates. Hell those first versions still flood the eBay market…and can be had on the cheap.

Now…fast forward to a few months before the 2011 PGA Show…when we first showed some “spy pics” of what they were working on for 2011. These putters that we saw were different…a lot different.  Putter companies and putter models come and go…most of which do little to make me sit up in my chair to take a second look.  But these definitely did.

The Devil Is In The Details

The first thing I noticed was the milling work on the sole engravings…I could tell that their new designer Adam Sheldon had logged some major man hours getting this exactly right.  Anyone can make a putter…but like with many other things the details are what separate the good from the average.  A lot of work goes into to making a putter look just right.  Everything must be scrutinized…milling marks, a gazillion finishes, contours, radius, weight distribution, hosel design, the list goes on and on. And…yes these putters all resemble classic models from years past which typically turns me off…but under further inspection and a detailed analysis…Adam really did find a way to make them unique.

Yeah…I was impressed when I initially saw the putters but I was even more impressed when I got to see them all first hand at the PGA Show.  Everything from the headcovers to the shaft labels to the limited edition staff bags were all top-notch work.  The booth although small was the most impressive at the show in my opinion.  You could tell that every last detail of how the booth was set-up was incredibly well thought out.  And after speaking with different people with Never Compromise and Cleveland they all said that head designer Adam Sheldon literally designed not only every single detail on the putters but also all the design work for the booth…which was a major undertaking and job well done.   If you want to re-launch a brand this was the way to do it!  (PGA SHOW PICS).

This Is The Way To Re-Launch A Brand

He had the right idea when re-launching the brand…stick to the classic designs but put your unique spin on it.  Because whether putter connoisseurs like it or not for some reason the models that sell year in and year out continue to be the same ones.  Whenever someone tries to go too far “out of the box” they get shot down.  Just look at Scotty Cameron and the Futura and Detour putters.  Ashame too…because it limits the creativity in putter design….but that is the way it goes in golf.  So…don’t fix what ain’t broke…just put your own spin on it…and the putters by Adam Sheldon for Never Compromise did that in my opinion very well.

Hats Off The Adam & Never Compromise

Not only did he put his on touch on the putters but the website is one if not the slickest putter sites around.  If you are looking for the most user-friendly sites to customize your new flatstick this is one for others in the business to use as inspiration.

So hats off to Adam and the rest of the team at Never Compromise…to what I think is the best new putter introduction by a big brand in a long time.

I feel the work I do is a reflection of who I am and the idea behind the work I do is more important than the work itself. You see, I don’t actually see myself in the golf business at all, I am in the business of caring. I am a guy who wakes up with one goal: do the right thing.

I like how the soles of these putters are decorated instead of left plain, much more interesting.

Price is nuts- the same as a Scotty Cameron, Odyssey Black or $50 more than a Nike Method- I somehow doubt NC has the same cachet as any of those brands/ models

Funny, but Clevelands own Classic and BRZ lines will probably outdo themselves- exactly the same models without the glitz for $75- think they might have been better pitching these at about the Method Core/ mid range Odyssey level, or a touch above, $125-$175

Perhaps they’re not trying to compete with those brands at that price range much like Scotty Cameron doesn’t.

Can’t see much of a market at this price

Seems like the company is missing the boat trying bring back the brand while excluding 99 percent of the market. Trying to convince buyers that these are twice as good ( by price ) as Ping, Taylormade or Oddysey is in my opinion IMPOSSIBLE

One of the E-Tour pros at my club switched to this putter from a belly putter. The putter looks incredible close up and I understand it feels fantastic off the face. I don’t know if I would give up my Cameron for one but I think taking a look at one couldn’t hurt.

Great looking putters, not sure if they will be able to compete with the putter brands in that price range.

Why do golf manufactures fail to post pictures of their clubs with pictures from a players point of view addressing the ball? I could care less about the back and bottom graphics because I don’t look at those when I hit the ball!

I’m no web designer so I can’t answer your question Don. I was just expressing my opinion.

I did exaggerate but I hate the navigation within flash the most. Back button becomes a hindrance instead of a help within flash sites. I’ll concede that it looks the nicest (if done right) but when I have to re-click several times to get to specific info I viewed a click ago, the looks doesn’t matter no more. I’m instantly reminded of how much I hate flash.

      Can’t forget the speed either.

I much prefer traditional sites where the information is easily accessible than the emphasis on the visuals. Scrolling is so much user-friendly than clicking too. Flash scrolling sucks as well on most sites. Can’t use the mouse for it lot of times.

Personally, I much prefer traditional sites using a nice layout with decent pictures than any flash driven ones.

ninetails, I’m curious…what would you replace the Flash with? Some ajax or html5 or what? I’m looking to do nice website for myself, but all I know is flash…

I hate flash driven websites. Yes it is slick looking and has customization but both can be achieved without flash. Flash is way too slow and navigation within flash sites suck.

MGS, Thanks for the breakdown. That is very interesting and really explains why a putter can be in the $300 ballpark. I’ve always wondered if it was just the pretige factor that you were paying for, but I can see now how those costs ad up.The mycustomputter feature certainly adds some value. I’ve yet to see one of these gambler series in person, but what I’ve seen in pictures, I like. The customized classic designs, mixed with Vegas eye candy works for me.

I do understand where you are coming from…especially with the economy being the way it is right now. But when you consider all the cost that go into a forged/milled limited production putter you quickly start to see why they get to around $300 in cost.

there is really no way around it if you want to be able to stay afloat in that limited market. Here is a breakdown example of some of the costs:

Head 100% Forged/CNC Milled – $50-70 (Not to mention tooling costs)
      Shaft – $2-10
Grip – $4-25 (And usually 1000 piece minimum for your own grip
Tooling Charge Grip – $400-1500 (for name on front and cap)
Headcover – $5-$15 (Not counting set-up charges with have to be calculated in to total cost)
      Shaft Labels – $1-2 (With Set-up costs)
      Custom Shipping Boxes – Ranges
Staff Bags – $150-250 (Depends on which company you go with their are almost always minimums on these as well…and almost every golf company has one…might not be part of the putter but it is part of overhead
      Tools – Ranges
      Website costs – Ranges
      Ads – Ranges
      PR – Ranges

So after you add all this up and divide it by the amount of putters in the line you can start to see how these type of putters easily will have to cost upwards of $300+

I’m not understanding the hype on these. It’s another 303 stainless putter line. For $300 you aren’t event getting a fully milled putter, they’re forged. I guess if you really dig the gambling theme they may have a draw, but the price seems way out of line. I’m not sure what kind of longevity is here after the initial hype wears off.
