Is Farther…Higher & Straighter Really a Good Thing With Your Irons?

So here it is…in all it’s glory. The new Nike SQ MachSpeed Irons that are supposed to hit the ball farther, higher and straighter for every golfer that buys in. Well that is what Tom Stites (Nike Designer) is of course saying and hoping for…so he and the company he works for (Nike) can hopefully sell some of these new sticks. How do they plan to do that? Well by allegedly adding a HOT FACE with a WIDER SWEET SPOT and putting more weight farther back to produce a LOWER CG. Heard any of these claims before? I feel like I have De Ja Vou 15 times a year when companies make these claims about their new products like the Nike MachSpeed Irons.

Strong Lofted Irons (Remember Those?)

Have you guys ever heard of “Strong Lofted” irons? Well about 15 years ago or so Cobra Golf became well known for making irons that hit the ball farther then any other brand at the time…this technology (scam) literally put them on the map. They were smart they listened to the consumer and gave them what they wanted…MORE DISTANCE! Every golfer wanted more distance with their woods…and their irons as well. So Cobra figured out a way to give them all that extra distance with their irons and believe it or not it was insanely simple. But in other industries would most likely be considered a SCAM.

THE SOLUTION: They would simply put a #4 engraving on what was really a #3 iron. And the same would go for the rest of the iron set…they would just make the iron you used to hit say 1 iron lower on the sole so you would now think you were hitting your new incredibly shiny and sparkly new irons one club further then you had with your previous set. But in actuality nothing had really changed. WOW! DID THIS REALLY WORK? DID WE REALLY GET SCAMMED LIKE THIS? YES…THIS PULL A RABBIT OUT OF A HAT TRICK ACTUALLY TRICKED ALL OF US!

And even when we found out no one raised any hell about it…why…because all they cared about was that they were now hitting it farther then the 4-some that they always played with. These Cobra irons started flying off the shelves. At first…people had no clue they were simply hitting irons that were simply “Strong Lofted” they actually believed that they were hitting their irons a whole club length farther. Even brands like Titleist jumped on the bandwagon and began using “SL” irons…because if your irons did not hit the ball as far people just weren’t buying.

So everyone was hitting the ball longer well at least they thought they were and over the years the standard iron set lofts changed accordingly to all be strong lofted because thats all anyone was making…so it became the standard.

So What Is Wrong w/HOT FACE TECHNOLOGY?

Companies know that distance sells and has since the beginning of golf. If someone claims you will hit it farther with their product…people will at least give it a shot. So companies like Nike and many others have tried and by the looks of this new release are still trying try to give you more distance with a so-called “BRAND NEW” (really old) technology called “THIN FACE TECHNOLOGY” in irons.

This is not a new technology at all…many golf companies have tried it but none have made it catch on. WHY HASN’T IT CAUGHT ON? Simple…because irons are supposed to be about accuracy and knowing your distances down to the yard for every iron in your bag not about being able to hit 200 yard 8-irons. The difference between a couple yards can be the difference between being pin high compared to being plugged in a bunker. And that is where the problem lies for the HOT FACE technology. The face generally is not as consistent as a typical iron face. Imagine jumping on a normal trampoline compared to one that is super thin but just as strong…with the super thin trampoline if you hit that perfect sweet spot it sends your soaring in the air…although miss that sweet spot by just a hair and the distance it propels you can be dramatically reduced. Same with the golf club…you could hit one shot 150 yards with your 8 iron but the next shot might fly 165 yards. This is because thinner faces rebound in a much different way compared to standard face wall thickness irons. So 2 almost identical swings can result in 2 dramatically different results and have you scratching your head wondering how the hell to fix the problem.

So…Has Nike Fixed The Issue With THIN FACE TECHNOLOGY?

We will have to wait and see…although none of the companies that have decided to incorporate this technology in the past have been able to. So we just wanted to warn you that…”Buyer beware about claims of THIN FACE TECHNOLOGY being the answer to your problems with distance in your irons.” You might get just what you asked for but that might just not be the best thing for your game and ultimately your handicap.

I’ve just bought the Nike SQ and was struggling to decided between them and the X24 hot irons. I walked out the store with the Nike SQ because they suited my swing much more. The X24 are great but haven’t got much forgiveness in them. For a improvement iron I think there a great club to give you some confidence. Only played a few games but I’ll keep you updated. I may have to eat humble pie but so far so good. Good to hear its not just me choosing between them two clubs. Tough choice.

just got the set last sunday, played 3 rounds since and love them. yeah the first day was CRAZY, kept slicing or over hitting the ball lone. so i guess the longer hitting was right. the only problem i am having is topping the ball. played with ignites the past 2 years so i’m not sure if that was the problem or just the fact that i have to get used to these. i’m not the longest hitter but went from hitting my 9 @ 125 to 9 @ 150. if anyone else on here has started playing with them i’d like to hear?

I was stuck between a rock and a hard place when deciding between the X-22 and the the Nike Machspeed. First few swings of the X-22 the club felt great very comfortable and hit well.. but then so did the Mach speeds.. So i went back the following day leaning more towards the X-22 but ended up walking out with Nikes after a couple of adjustments to the clubs. They prob aren’t the best looking club in the world but if it helps bring down my handicap it can look like quasimodo for all i care! I’ll let you know how they go…!
p.s. the other deciding factor was the offer of 4 dozen Nike Vapor speed balls with the irons!

Can I ask how your getting on with your Nike SQ? I’ve just bought a set. Do you still use them and are you happy with them?

Say what you will, these clubs swing so easy and are as forgiving as Nike says they are. I’ve tried them alongside the Mizuno and Ping clubs. They just feel the best to me.

I play a players iron but this doesn’t look half bad for a game improvement.. The more they play with face thickness in irons the more they are asking for the USGA to come in and start putting regulations on them.

Just looking at them for the first time you can tell they are a Nike iron. No other manufacturer pushes the limit of decency like Nike does. Shelf appeal is so huge in this industry. You got to make one that stands out a little more than the next. Compared to the previous model SQ irons, Sumo, they already look miles ahead. Better look at address and looks like they took that cheap, vibration-dampening rubber insert out of the cavity. I’ll give em’ a try when they are released, but if they play like the Sumos they have another bomb on their hands.

These look like irons designed by a caveman!

In all seriousness though, these don’t even look like irons they look like woods.

There just seems to be a lot going on. My question is why do all the game improvement irons out there have so many aesthetic issues. It seems every game improvement club looks so junky these days. I would like to see more clean looking GI irons.

Your right…it seems like they try to throw as much as they can on these new GI irons. And unfortunately people are buying it…because they think this means there is more technology in the iron.

I also don’t like the gimmicky look. TaylorMade and Callaway have had some of the most gimmicky looking irons ever. At least the R9 irons look cleaner. But I play Mizuno’s for a reason. Love the way they look, play and feel. While I don’t play the MX series, it is a very nice GI iron. Mizuno feel with technology for Mid to high handicappers. I’m sure these Nike irons will sell. They’re just not my cup of tea.

Wow. That is the most aggressive looking iron I have ever seen. It’s like an X-22, Tour Burner, and the old Nike Sling-Shot had an orgy and this was the result of it. I think this club will sell based on looks and their claim for distance. I personally wouldn’t game them, but I have a feeling that the general golfer is going to dig these clubs. That or the name Machspeed will give golfer everywhere a subconscious desire to go shave.

Very true. The thing is the average consumer wants to buy distance because they don’t have the time to practice or to work with a good swing coach. That’s also why the average score for golfers has not improved.

The real secret to more distance and a better game starts with good fundamentals practiced the right way, for an extended period of time. But your average consumer doesn’t want to hear this. Short term fixes in golf don’t last.

since its not a players iron it is not for me but i actually don’t mind their appearence…however you make some very good points about hot faces and wanting more distance with your irons…

ps: the whole scam thing is halarious to find out, i can just imagine all of the guys at their local club gettin some dumb guy grin on their face because they are hitting their irons one club further, when in reality nothing has changed…lol
