Anyone Buying?

A few months ago we were put in contact with a new putter company in France called PGTEE.  They had some interesting looking sticks to say the least and when we heard how much these flatsticks were going to cost we decided we better get in touch.  At the time they were running 1500 EUROS which about made me spit my drink out.  But now we just got an update that they are going to sell for 2000 EUROS which translates to $2929.74! US Dollars … well at least that is the conversion rate today. Incredible!

I emailed back and forth with the designer although the communication barrier was a little tough.  So we thought we would let you guys in on the action.  We posted some info about them on our Facebook page and gave a chance for our Facebook fans to ask the owner some questions.  (If you would like to take part in some of these Q &A’s we have from time to time on Facebook all you have to do is join us here.)

Q&A From Facebook Fans for PGTee Designer

1. How did you get into the business?
After working for 2 years, during my studies, at a golf club dealer, I started to look more precisely the golf club business and found out that we didn’t have a luxury french exclusive brand. Therefore I decided to launch PGTee, focussing on bringing the clubmaking assembling quality to traditional golf clubs. All our clubs (irons, SW and now putter) are totally hand-made and the assembling is life warantied.

2. What are the putters made from?
The putters are 100% CNC milled from aeronautical aluminum here in France, with adjustable tungsten weights.

3. How much do they cost?
It costs around 2000 EUROS  (prices are not totally fixed yet)
The DZ-1 PGTee putter, is a 100 piece limited edition around the world. It comes with a solid Carbon Fiber Headcover (ours was leather…very nice actually) and a Carbon Fiber Flycase.
Each putter is completely customizable.

4. How long have you been designing putters?
The DZ-1 is our first putter release. We have been working on it for more than two years now with our research department, combining golfers and aeronautical engineers.

5. How long has PGtee been around?

PGTee exists since 2007.

6. What do you do other then make putters? Are you in a different industry as well?
In France PGTee is known since 2007 for the exclusive G01 Iron Sets (200 pieces in ther world) and SW . (www.pgtee.com , french only, sorry)
In our workshop, Certified Clubmakers assemble, on demand, the G01, with very precise specifications:

– Oriented shafts (only clubmaking shafts)
– MOI Matching Balance
– Frequency Matching
– 200 laser engraved iron sets
– Life warantied assembling
– Correcting lofts and lies up to 4 degrees, with a 1/4 degree accuracy…

7. What makes these putters different from other brands?
As we have been working on it for more than two years with the best clubmakers and engineers, we came up with the best putter in the world:

– Highest MOI for the best playability
– Best rolling even on hard greens
– Adjustable tungsten weights for exact fitting (325 – 360 g)
– Exclusive design (independant young french object designer)
– Astonishing sensations (feel and touch) due to the material choice and design
– “Face-balanced” of course
– UST filtered putter shaft bringing even more precise feeling of the impact
– Completely customizable

GIVE THEM YOUR OPINION (TELL THEM WHAT YOU THINK)

We thought it would be a good idea for you guys to give PGTee some feedback on their putter.  Other companies have asked for us to post photos to get the MyGolfSpy readers opinions before…and it has worked very well for those companies.  I think this one might be very interesting to say the least.  I think you guys might have a field day with this one.  Let’s hear what you have to say.

couldnt afford it, but it does look nice, and well-weighted. as long as the face is not very tall it could work well.

Obviously they are looking for a niche market. This is for people that have way too much money. (Translated: More money than they can spend in a lifetime.) They have to have the one no one else can afford. With the designs they have in this putter, it probably puts fairly well. But I’m SURE that’s NOT why they would buy this one.

So this is “a luxury french exclusive brand.” Let me guess, when it sees a tough -looking putt its runs back into your bag and hides??

This looks like something I would expect to see if I ever ventured into WalMart’s putter section. It’s nice to know that the “prices aren’t totally fixed yet.” I hope no one invested their life savings in this thing. It may have the worst alignment aids I’ve ever seen, I can’t think of any worse than this one. They were clearly going for cutesy not functional. Aeronautical Aluminum is a fancy name for aluminum that can withstand unusual stresses. They should have stuck with normal aluminum to reduce the cost. How much stress being placed on a putter?? None. We’ve always heard the French are a little strange/unusual. Perhaps the price point is based on it being a piece of art? They have more artists per capita than any other country thanks to the govt. paying each artist what is equal to welfare in the US to practice their craft. This putter looks like it was designed and built by one of these “artists”.

No, Aeronautical Aluminium means that its very light so you can throw it when you realise you have spent $3000 on a piece of s**t putter!!!

Close to $3000 grand ehh? It totally makes sense with the price, as they are all limited edition clubs. If anyone is foolish enough to spend that kind of money on this putter they will have the only one in the world. Personally I’d rather have 10 Scotty Camersons, or 20 Pings.

I like to spend a little more on my putter.

Currently playing a diamond encrusted model made by Tiger Woods’ lover’s mother!

Come on $2000-thats way OTT. In the current economic climate its not right that people spend that on a putter!

The headcover looks like a wallet which is all our wallets will be good for after buying this putter at 3,000 bucks! Is it me or does it just like someone went nuts with the bandsaw and a block of aluminium?

      Ok, to be serious:
This putter does have a “look” about it. Its not altogether unattractive and in some ways I kind of like it. Its very raw looking though. Alot of very sharp edges that leave it looking unfinished. Its a reasonable first design, but doesn’t have a “finished product” look to me.

It is almost impossible to separate the putter itself from its price. For that price, I expect to see some serious technology. Not just a couple weight plugs and a cute alignment graphic. I expect some serious multimaterial integration and something that just makes you wonder “can it really be worth it?” This doesn’t have that. They need people to WANT to pick this thing up and try it out. As it is, it has almost a comical effect. At first glance, its a big clunky black putter, then you see the price and just have to laugh!

You’re right Eric it doesn’t look like it has the technology behind it. It’s the little black dress of putter designs maybe it’s meant to be chic? Compared to all the technology that goes into a Bobby Grace high MOI putter for a tenth of the price it’s asking alot. I can imagine a French fashion house stamping their name on it and selling it in a boutique for ten times the price. On the plus side at least they have us talking about it.

There are alot of aiming marks on it, i think that would through you off. It almost looks like the F7 from odyssey but mork bulky. Also for $3000.00 you can put together a whole set of Titleist clubs for less then that. This putter better make the puts for you, is what Im saying.

Wow French deisigner putters ready for the catwalks. The alignment aid looks like a power light so I guess this putter will either turn you ON or OFF. I wonder how long before we see a stylish Frenchman gaming it in Europe?

It had good feel partly due to the shaft. And a High MOI so it putted pretty well too. But a lot pricey and a lot strange looking as you can tell.

There must have been some heavy fumes given off in the workshop when they were working on the prototype and then the price for this putter. For $3000 it would have to have a gyroscope and sonar tracking to the hole and by then it would be illegal. If I found it in a garage sale I might offer the guy $25. The headcover looks like a great cellphone case.
