Polarizing Products: COBRA’s FF33 Hosel – Fitting Revolution or Overkill?

It wouldn’t be a proper golf season without something new and head-turning from COBRA and the FF33 hosel system might be their boldest move yet. Featured in the new DS-ADAPT drivers, this adjustable hosel offers 33 unique settings. Yes, you read that right: thirty-three.

Some golfers call it brilliant. Others say it’s just too much. Let’s break it down. Is FF33 a groundbreaking leap forward in driver fitting or is it more about complexity than actual benefit?

The case for FF33: Fitting without limits

COBRA isn’t just adding a couple of extra options here. With 33 unique settings built into a clean, dual-cog hosel adapter, FF33 allows fitters and gearheads to dial in loft, lie, face angle, launch and spin with more precision than ever before.

According to COBRA, robot testing showed a 16-yard dispersion swing from left to right, nearly four degrees of launch angle change, 750 rpm spin difference and up to 16 yards in peak height variation.

That’s all before you even touch the movable weights on the LS and X models.

If you’re working with a knowledgeable fitter and have access to the proper setup, FF33 offers a level of fine-tuning few others can match. Combine that with COBRA’s SMARTPAD sole which helps keep the face square at address regardless of the hosel setting and you’ve got one of the most fittable driver systems on the market.

That does sound pretty exciting doesn’t it?

The case against: Complexity and compatibility

Let’s be real. Thirty-three (33!)settings sound great in theory but for many golfers, it’s already tough to understand and utilize a handful of options. COBRA has made an effort to clearly label the hosel and there’s an app to guide you but how many golfers are actually going to use it?

Then there’s compatibility. Older MyFly8 shafts from previous COBRA drivers won’t fit the FF33. That means that if you’ve got a favorite shaft, it’s not making the jump. And for those who go through a third-party fitter using universal adapters, you’re likely not getting the full FF33 experience either.

So while the system offers incredible potential, most golfers may never get to unlock what it truly offers. Without access to a COBRA-specific fitting cart, the promise of FF33 remains more theoretical than practical for a lot of players.

Where do you stand?

More adjustability is generally seen as a benefit but is there a point where it becomes too much? Does FF33 give you more meaningful control over your driver or just more ways to overthink things?

Would you take the time to test all 33 “unique” settings? Does this make you more excited about fitting or more overwhelmed by it?

And what about the shaft compatibility? Is that a reasonable sacrifice for new tech or a deal-breaker?

Let us know what you think. Has COBRA raised the bar for driver customization or has it crossed the line from innovation into unnecessary complexity?

The FF33 is a great start. I went into a fitting thinking Elyte Core, ended up in Cobra DS Adapt X. The nice thing was that the fitter could tweak the setting and get me into the correct settings for that club. I also think that fitters could use the FF33 hosel as a starting point for any fitting and get a better idea what might be best on any club in a fitting as long as the person being fit isn’t just locked into one club.

It isn’t too many settings, it is just a great start but of course people need something to complain about.

Not overkill at all. You can dial it in simply by hitting on the range. Start with setting A1 – neutral. Use their shot shape graph to match up what you’re doing now, then apply the appropriate setting per their chart to see about altering the shot shape the other (left, right) and/or high, low) way. One thing is that you’ll definitely want to stick with 360 grips to avoid the possibility of seeing a grip logo come into view at address after you’ve applied a new setting.

Call me an early adopter. I was fitted for the new cobra DS – Adapt driver and got to experience, first hand, the FF 33 hosel. While I experienced incremental launch changes from setting to setting, flight path and down range effects were certainly noticeable. Cobra has been innovative for some time and this tracks for them. From 3D printed putters to irons along with other pushes in technology, I would expect nothing less from Corba than to start pushing hosl boundaries and paving the way for others to follow. It’s definitely worth a try.

Not overkill, as it took about 15 mins with my fitter to confirm the appropriate setting. I have not had any success with actual drivers from OEMs, and have played a mini driver for the last 4 years…we found out why pretty quick. The mini driver is 2 degrees flat and helps prevent the overcook hook. Basically all you do is tell fitter or you yourself know what your typical miss is (mine is low hook) and basically set it extreme opposite of that and work with it. In my case low hook put me to A6 (high fade) bias on the cobra. Spin was around 2900 with the weight back, flipped heavy and light weights and we were at 2400 spin and 12 launch off stuff relative middle of club. Honestly I hit some what I’d deem awful drives (like 20mm off the toe) that somehow still stayed in play. It’s unreal forgiveness and feels like cheating

I don’t have access to a good fitter nor do I own a launch monitor, so where does that leave me? Very interesting product if I can fit myself.

If you know what your current driver’s ball flight looks like (especially your typical miss) you can just go here https://www.cobragolf.com/pages/ff33 and it will tell you which DS Adapt setting might fix that for you.

Ideally you’d also be able to go into a store to test the DS Adapt itself, identify your stock shot shape with it, and then adjust from there. You don’t need a professional fitter, Cobra kind of acts like the fitter for you with FF33 and the website.

I think for a “getting back into it” golfer like myself who also owns or has access to a launch monitor its pretty straightforward, start with max draw and min loft, the extreme and see where you’re at and adjust accordingly. I think you will have to understand what the adjustments are and what they do fully before you go out there but yeah starting at one end of the extremely and moving in from there doesn’t sound like more than an hour and a small bucket of balls

I think many who think its overkill probably have not tried the club or experienced what it can do with an experienced fitter. I have and so has my wife. I had just bought another driver a couple of months before the DS-ADAPT was available. When the Cobra guys came to our club during a demo session with all their products, I was anxious to try it since I already play with Cobra irons. The fitter took only 10 minutes with me hitting balls to adjust the driver to the point of me hitting beautiful long accurate drives. Even though it was a lot better than my current gamer, I didn’t want to put more money into another driver. My wife got fitted about 2 months ago and has never been as long and as accurate as she is with the DS-ADAPT. Something she could not get with the other (Ping, Taylormade, Callaway, PXG) drivers. I’ve said it before in the forums that this system is superior to what the other manufactures offer as far as fitting the club perfectly to a person’s swing. As soon as I can sell my current driver, I plan to get one too.

The DS-Adapt Max-K has virtually eliminated the slice I’ve been suffering with for YEARS. All you have to do is use Cobra’s FF33 shot-shape diagram to figure out which setting to adjust everything to. It took me literally five minutes. It’s like magic. To make things even easier they stamped or etched a QR code near the hosel that brings you to the interactive fitting diagram on their website. They couldn’t make it any easier, I’m beyond pleased with my driver and the FF33 system. I’m saving up for some of the woods and hybrids next!

The article does make a good point about how the adapter doesn’t fit with all shafts, but I thought there was a decent selection of them offered. I’m also not sure most recreational golfers are good enough to be super picky about shafts anyway but to each their own lol

DS ADAPT X: Best driver I have ever owned ! Fitting diagram easy to use and allowed me to dial in appropriate spin + launch, carry, and beloved baby draw in about 30 min on the range with my trusty SC300. 33 settings is NOT overwhelming because it isn’t necessary to test all 33. I made a copy of the fitting chart which I simply keep in my pocket , just in case…
At $549 it’s still $100 bucks cheaper than the OEM’s and a significant step better than the now heavily discounted but similar looking on the outside Darkspeed–but don’t be fooled, they are different behaving animals.

It’s not overkill if it works. I personally think it’s too much for me. And I know I would get obsessive about tweaking it constantly. However, this could be an absolute dream for the right golfer.

overkill. it would take a week at least to work thru the settings to narrow down by quadrant (I realize you won’t need to test every setting once you ‘eliminate’ a section). beyond the cost and time at the fitter, no amateur golfer is going to do this, and no professional golfer will need/use this.
i guess if it costs minimal R&D to have made it’s fine, but certainly no one should be paying a premium for it.
applaud the creativity and thought, but this is a niche-within-a-niche hosel to see legit usage and benefit as intended by Cobra.

Literally takes 5 minutes. You pick a loft to start, you put it where you want it, and you hit it.
And it comes with the new driver which cost $100 less than the other big 4.
What the heck you on about

A week Swami ??? shucks, it took me 30 min on the range with my SC300 Launch monitor. Cost ???? It’s still $100 bucks cheaper than Titleist or Callaway’s premium offerings. I would snap it up before Trump tariffs make golf equipment unaffordable.

Less than 30 minutes for a professional fitting and that included eliminating the Qi35, Elyte Core and the GT2. GT2 was second best, but the reality is it was just tweaking a few different settings on the FF33 hosel once I had swung every driver. It was obvious what quadrant was necessary.
