This Club is a Cheat Code

As the self-proclaimed worst golfer at MyGolfSpy, when I say that a certain club is making the game easier, you should listen up.

If something works for someone as bad as me, it’ll probably do wonders for you.

That’s a little facetious but you get the point. I want to make the game easier and I found a club that absolutely fits the bill.

The Ultimate Bunker Club

Recently, I switched into the Vokey SM10 wedges. It’s my first time ever playing Vokeys. Not knowing a whole lot about wedge grinds, I went through Vokey’s Wedge Selector Tool to determine the correct gapping and grinds for my game.

It was suggested that I go with a 60 degree K-grind lob wedge. The rest, as they say, is history.

I’ve never been a good bunker player. I’ve tried a few wedges in my day. Nothing has come close to the ease of my Vokey K-grind lob wedge.

When I say I haven’t missed a bunker shot in the last three months, I mean it. Not only am I getting out of bunkers with ease, I’m actually getting up and down much more often.

Why? That wide, forgiving sole. It almost feels effortless (something I never thought I’d say about bunkers).

The large, wide sole is the signature characteristic of the Vokey K Grind wedge

I still don’t know a whole lot about grinds, and I’m surely not a great golfer by any stretch of the imagination … but this little tweak to my wedge setup has absolutely been a game changer.

I want you to play better golf. The Vokey SM10 K Grind wedge is a great place to start.

My humble expérience: I own a golf shop at a busy golf club.

When anyone over 8 handicap want to demo wedges before they buy, I always give them a 58K or 60K in the 2 or 3 wedges they are going to try.
They come back and 75% of them buy a K grind …

It is the best wedge anyone can have in their bag.
      I personally own 2

This article inspired me to try a 58 degree K grind. It’s been automatic since I put it in the bag. I’ve tried other big-flange sand irons (even the Alien!) and this is better than they were in the sand, and this is much more versatile for short shots and around the greens. It’s a confidence building club in the sand, and higher confidence means better swings and better shots so I’m getting better and better the longer I use it.

I always hit my 60 degree out of bunkers. My home course is littered with greenside pot bunkers so the 60 is the only way to go. I play TM MG4’s with Tiger grind. No idea what that meant but has worked for me since. Congrats on finding the right 60 for you Connor! Happy 4th to everyone!

I keep two 56 degree wedges in my bag. One with the smallest amount of bounce available at 6 degrees, and one with the most bounce available, 14 degrees. I play all shots inside of 100 yards with these two clubs including the bunkers. Soft deep sand requires more bounce, hard sand requires less.

Depends on the type of sand, I’m afraid. There are quite a few different kinds, it doesn’t always work in every type, so you would probable end up adjusting to some other bounce and loft.

Good for you. The sole is similar to the 60 or 70 year old Ben Hogan Sure-Out. Methinks many sandies are just variations on Hogan. My Hogan is close to 100% too, except when I diddle around. I wonder how many here, or in the wide world, still use Hogan. I wonder how many Jim Kronus at IronFactory refininshes.

I still use my grandad’s Hogan Special SI (inherited it in well used condition in the late 70s when he died). Big sole, high bounce and super forgiving, no spin since the grooves are sanded down but so reliable.

I don’t have a favorite combo of loft/grind so your statement is incorrect

The great thing about Vokey wedges is, that there are so many options, and surely one that fits our swing style – my favorite is a 56 (bend to 55) M grind for all chipping and outside greens shot.

I got a k grind in the 58 degrees and it had been great the F grind in the lower lofts has been a champ as well as I have been throwing darts inside 60 yards with a 52-degree f grind and the 58 degrees k grinds even as a high handicapper. Upgrading my 2 higher loft wedges to these from my Callaway big bertha set wedges has easily shaved 5 strokes off a round

Glad you are having such great results with the Vokey 60 K grind, but you must be playing the same course with the same sand all the time. Seems kind of naive to think that one grind will handle all swings, soft sand, firm sand, wet sand–I modify my wedges depending on conditions ! Furthermore, 60 degree just doesn’t do it for long-ish bunker shots. Distance control should be managed by changing club loft. 60 degrees is fine for short ones, 54 or 56 better for long ones. Less bounce is better for firm or wet sand, otherwise the bounce will drive the leading edge into the ball and blade you over the green or worse !

I love my 60 degree K-grind! It’s great for all conditions around the green. That wide sole with 6 degrees of bounce is very versatile.

I just wish it was offered in something other than the raw finish. It just felt a little wrong to pay a premium for a club that is designed to rust.

      That’s not sexy!

I found a bunker cheat code a while ago in the Mizuno ES21 w 58⁰ although I have mainly used it out of very firm/compact/bare bunkers..its a nice cheaper option

Do you really use a 60 degree out of the bunker? In my experience I just can’t get enough sand with a 60, and once I started playing with a 56 out of the bunkers it made all the difference. And I do play Vokey wedges at 52, 56 and 60.
