Most PGA Tour WITBs (What’s In The Bag) look pretty much the same. We know the typical setup—driver, 3-wood, utility iron, standard iron set, a couple of wedges, etc. It’s a formula most Tour players follow without much deviation. But that’s not what you’ll find in Sahith Theegala’s golf bag. He has a quirky bag, but it’s effective, and it may just change how you think about “Tour-level” equipment.

The 8-iron that’s technically a 7-iron
If you look closely, you’ll see 4-, 5- and 6-irons and then 8, 9, pitching wedge. Where’s the 7-iron? Good question, weird answer: he had PING create a 7-iron with an 8 stamped on the sole.
Same loft, different number.
As a young golfer, Theegala struggled with his 7-iron, which was affecting his mental game. As a PGA Tour professional, he just doesn’t want to see that number in his bag. So instead, he has an 8-iron and an “8-plus iron.”
A 4-wood and 9-wood
The traditional tour setup is to carry a driver, a 3-wood and then sometimes a 5-wood or a utility iron. Theegala chooses a PING G440 Max 4-wood turned down to 16 degrees and a 24-degree 9-wood.
Interestingly, he’s not the only pro with a 9-wood in the bag at times. Adam Scott and Ryan Gerard also have them. While Theegala does make some tweaks to his bag depending on the tournament he is playing, the 9-wood is in there regularly.
He has also been quoted as saying he may put a 5-hybrid in the bag at some point.
Tour pros don’t usually play “Max” fairway woods
Most PGA Tour players lean toward lower-spin fairway woods like the PING LST models. But Theegala’s bag features two PING G440 Max fairway woods.
The LST fairway woods only come in a 5-wood and a 3-wood. The Max comes in 3-, 4-, 5-, 7- or 9-wood.
The G440 Max is more forgiving, launches higher and offers more spin, traits that many amateurs (and, evidently, some Tour pros) can benefit from. His setup proves that forgiveness isn’t just for mid-handicappers. It’s about matching the right tool to the shot.
Final thoughts
Theegala’s bag is weird by Tour standards but it’s not random and it works. He knows what he needs and makes sure it’s in the bag. If you’re looking for a reason to break tradition and build a setup that fits your game, use Theegala as inspiration.
