The World’s Softest Urethane Ball

The World’s Softest Urethane Ball

With appropriate apologies to Jim Morrison and friends, Wilson Staff’s “Soft Parade” marches on.

Wilson stakes a legitimate claim to being the leader in low compression golf balls, dating back to 1997 and the Staff Titanium; an 80 compression ball in a land where 90 to 110 compression ruled.

The FG Tour, last year’s DUO Spin and the 3 year old DUO are, in order, soft, softer and softest. The 29 compression DUO feels like a marshmallow and is plenty long, but lacks much in the way of greenside spin. The 35 compression DUO Spin provides more spin for players who want it, while the 70 compression, 4-layer FG Tour is Wilson’s premium Tour ball.

Players who want a soft ball with tour-level spin without the tour-level price found a friend with Callaway’s Chrome Soft last year. This year Wilson’s firing back with it’s own soft spinmeister, the DUO Urethane.

Wilson Duo Urethane - 6

Wilson says at 55 compression, the DUO Urethane is the world’s softest ball with a Urethane cover.

Soft Serve

“We’ve been working on a low compression solution for urethane since we released the first DUO,” says Frank Simonutti, Wilson’s Global Director of Golf Ball Innovation. “Our testing shows that the majority of golfers, regardless of handicap, prefer a softer feeling golf ball.”

Wilson Duo Urethane - 5 midcrop

Simonutti detailed the benefits of low compression balls in great detail for MyGolfSpy this past October (click here to give it a read), and it’s pretty obvious the rest of the golfing world is going soft.  Wilson, however, can legitimately lay claim to leading the way.

“I would say ‘imitation is the highest form of flattery.’ Competition keeps you on your toes and causes you to push the limits on new materials and designs. The key for Wilson Golf is that we developed this platform through our intense consumer research and then committed to the category when most of the other golf brands where claiming that low compression was not an important feature of a golf ball. Clearly, if you look at the market today and the launch of low compression golf balls, many competitors have flip-flopped on their position. – Tim Clarke, Wilson Golf president

Inside The Duo

As the name suggests, the DUO Urethane has a cast urethane cover for maximum spin on approach shots. Simonutti says cast urethane is preferred because it’s more scuff-resistant than the alternative thermoplastic urethane. As the name would not suggest, this DUO is a 3-piece ball, with a DuPont HPF inner mantle designed specifically for use in golf balls.

Wilson Duo Urethane - 8

“The inner layer (mantle) of a 3-piece ball is designed to contribute to both the velocity and the spin of the golf ball,” Simonutti told MyGolfSpy last fall. “This layer needs to provide as much velocity as possible while contributing (along with the soft core) to the low compression.”

The relative softness of the core is what drives the soft feel, while also minimizing spin on tee shots.

Pricing and Availability

The new DUO Urethane is available now on Wilson’s website and in stores, and retails for $37.99/dozen.  That puts it right in the same neighborhood as Callaway’s Chrome Soft and others in that category.

Wilson Duo Urethane - 11

Wilson is offering an online deal. It’s sending out a trial 2-pack with every DUO Urethane dozen. They want you to try to 2-pack first and if you don’t like them, you can send the unused dozen back for a refund.

If these Wilson balls are so good, why can’t you find them at pro shops and most of the big name off course shops? I’ve hit many of the older balls vs the big names and found (as most golfers have) that they all float the same and hide in the leaves and trees the same.
Why are we buying a $40 to $50 ball that does the same as the under $20 and under $30 balls that don’t make us piss and moan about a lost ball. If the ball companies do have the 2nd and 3rd tier balls that make you enjoy the game, then use them so your fellow fun loving golfers will still want to play with you. During my 16 years in the golf business, I found the 300
+ yard strikers and par shooters were few and far in between and seemed to be satisfied that lying about those statistics made for ego requirements they needed. Do yourself a favor and pick a ball that truly suits your game. You are no fun to play with when whining about losing a $4 to $5 ball.

It would be nice to see some side by side testing on a robot with the same club at different speeds and various balls. My PERCEPTION is that I hit a higher compression ball further. I’ve played a couple of rounds where there was no one else on the golf course and I could hit multiple tee shots. The higher compression balls seemed to go further. Not sure if it was due to more carry or more roll, however. And, of course, each swing was different because I’m not a robot.

Have to agree. I’d never played Callaway. In the past I loved Wilson balls especially the SmartCore. But I could never embrace the Duo and trust me I have tried. Didn’t like the Callaway Chrome Soft either. But I came upon the Supersoft and it became my ball. Then bought a dozen in yellow and I’m happy, happy, happy.

Played the Duo U last weekend in Orlando. Had (emphasis on past tense) been playing the Callaway ChromeSoft. Duo U was little longer off tee, actually (didn’t think it was possible) felt softer and had perfect spin (hop and stop) on approach irons. Will be playing this ball in 2016. Truly felt like the old Titleist Tour Balata but lasted the entire round. I also hit the Wilson C200’s at PGA Show demo day and was very impressed – going to order a set this spring.

I will admit, I am a ball whore with no allegiance. I have some new balls, ranging from various Nikes to Bridgestones, to Titleists to Ram Tour. I haven’t bought balls unless I play at a destination course on vacation and have to rent clubs. I’m not sure i’d notice the difference at this point since i’m all over the map, but I’ve heard very good things about much of Wilson’s equipment over the last few years ( I play their FG Tour M3 hybrid….luvin it).
Looks like some favorable reviews, plus the 2 ball trial pack is GENIUS. Check out the pic of Golfzilla2069 proclaiming ” a ball worth going after.” Nuff Said

Wilson makes quality equipment. Their new irons are fantastic, and Duo is a fantastic ball. They need to step up on the woods, but anyone dismissing Wilson Staff (and Cobra) nowadays is missing out, and spending more on other brands.

Absolutely. I was a big TaylorMade guy since the Burner days. I made my way into Wilson Staff with Di11 and was hooked. Now, my bag is Wilson Infinite Northside putter, FG Tour wedges, D200 irons, hybrids and 3w. I hd a D200 driver, but switched to Cobra Fly Z. I even have a Wilson Nexus cart bag. Im a Staff guy for the duration. I love what im seeing with the C200 and cant wait to hit the F5 stuff.
