PING G15 Driver Review – Without The Hype

Every year it seems like one company after another hypes up the release of their new driver yet to the point almost no one even listens anymore. Because every year so many of them fall short of their promises and claims. That is what we are here for…we want to be the only truly 100% unbiased review site on the web. Of course every company is going to try and hype their product…we get it…that is what sells clubs. But we are out to have the most informed golf blog on the planet. So…if it is good we will tell you it is good and if it is bad we will tell you just how bad it really is. That is because the next time you go to spend your hard earned money on a golf club e don’t want you spending a dollar if it doesn’t improve on what you already have.

And that brings us to our Ping G15 review today…and is another reason why I talked about hype. You rarely hear it coming from this company. But year in and year out after all is said and done and all the hype from the all the other companies has died down…if you start asking guys what feels the best and what driver they have liked the most…a Ping driver is almost always in the conversation. Now in regards to looks they are not my cup of tea…the graphics always seem to be way out in left field compared to the rest of the industry…but hey it has worked for them.

Looks – She’s not a beauty Queen…BUT…

Well like I said the Ping drivers graphics and layout has always seemed gaudy and very elementary to me but graphics aren’t responsible for hitting fairways so no big deal. Even though we were not big fans of the graphics, the Ping G15 did have some improvements over some of the their past driver designs. For one thing they got rid of the half-moon crescent thingamagig on the crown which was good to see.

The other difference you will notice is in the shape of the head. It has a less traditional pear shape and more of a triangular look to the head at address. This has increased the MOI over past designs and helped to improve those off center hits.

Performance – Long, Straight, Solid Feel

So was I impressed with the G15? Actually I was…looks were deceiving. Because when I first brought it out I would NOT have put money on it being the winner of the bunch. Like always it did not get as much attention from me or the testers at first but by the end it was the crowd fav. I took it out to the range with 5 other drivers… and 10 random handicap golfers to test out the club. All golfers hit all of the drivers including the Ping G15.

And the result:

  • A shocking 50% of the golfers chose the G15 as their favorite…the next highest driver received just 30% of the votes.

We also launch monitor tested the drivers and the G15 performed well here as well. It performed good in distance and well above the competition in off-center hits. Which for the average golfer should be one of the most important factors. The G15 almost performed as well on hits off the toe as it did on perfectly struck drives. However, it did not perform very well on hits of the heel.

The one main hang-up for me with this driver is that it is not adjustable. For instance the driver that came in 2nd place I would contemplate putting in my bag over the Ping G15 just for the simple fact that it is adjustable. We are not always hitting a nice draw or a consistent fade over the course of a summer so it is nice to have that ability to change the driver on the fly to adjust for our minor swing changes. But I got to say that I was otherwise impressed with the Ping G15. It was definitely an over-achiever.

Conclusion – Hard To Argue With Results

No matter what this driver looks like the thing just performs. And like always Ping just seems to put one consistent driver out after another. It is hard not to like it when it hits it straight and goes long and feels great at contact. Now you might not turn heads at your local course when you whip it out of your bag…but you might have some friends you didn’t have before the round when all the guys are asking if they can hit it on the range after the round.

It just seems to be one of those drivers that takes more time to catch on because it really is a word of mouth type of success with their drivers. Golfers always want to try what someone else has got if they are hitting it well. And that is how Ping’s drivers usually move off the shelf and into golfers bags. Just like in the restaurant business…if you got good food people are gonna hear about you. And it is just a matter of time before you become the lunchtime hotspot.

PROS:

  • SOUND – like always Ping has maintained a solid sounding driver. This isn’t the typical hollow aluminum can you get from many of the drivers nowadays.
  • FEEL – This is an area this driver stands above the rest in my opinion. The face feels good almost anywhere you hit it, which is a major + for the average golfer that does not get to play enough to strike it on a dime.
  • DISTANCE – the Ping G15 driver performed well above average in the distance category. For driver that does not show off with all the bell and whistles it still shined above the majority of the competition.

CONS:

  • ADJUSTABILITY – I know that Ping prides themselves on not following the crowd when it comes to BS technology. They are usually last to the table if they even come with ome of the crazy stuff companies put out. But the adjustability tech is here to stay in my opinion. It helps all golfers…from hacks to the pros.
  • LOOKS – well I don’t want to beat a dead horse with this graphics thing…but I am just curious whether or not this is done on purpose and they have done some research on golfers about what they thing about when they here the name PING…and their answer was ugly graphics…because that is the only reason I could think of them leaving them like this for production

(==> Note to golfers <==) always get professionally fit if possible…because results with a stock shaft can vary tremendously from one type golfer to another. Getting proper launch angles and spin rates for any driver you play outweighs the importance of the head 10 fold. So if you choose a G15 driver make sure to get fit with a shaft that gets you the maximum performance possible

I realize the G 15 is now considered “old”, as the “G” line has been updated. I just wanted to say that as a golfer on a budget, this was right in my price range. I decided to go and get fit for a driver, and told the fitter my price point and that I wasn’t brand specific. I hit two Cobras, a Taylormade and two Callaways before I was handed the G 15. The first time I hit it, I knew it was the one, even before the fitter told me that was the best drive of the session. It felt so solid, yet effortless. My swing speed is in the mid-high 80’s (I was told this is average), and I started by hitting a 10.5 regular flex with Ping shaft. Then hit a 10.5 regular flex with Serrano shaft, and settled on this because the launch angle and spin rate was just a little better.
Hit it on the range, and it has added around 20 yards to my distance. The ball flight is medium high, and it looks like I’m getting more roll out than I used to. It took a little while to become accustomed to the additional shaft length, but once I figured it out it was without a doubt the best driver I have ever hit. I wasn’t loosing drives to the right like before, and miss hits were longer than I expected yet still manageable. I can’t wait to get it out on the course and hit something besides range balls.
I would highly recommend the G 15 to any golfer on a budget, who doesn’t have to have the “newest” thing out there, you won’t be sorry.

I have a Ping G 15 and love it. It is the 10.5 and I am looking for a second one in the 9 degree. The only thing I didn’t care for much was the stock Ping shaft. I changed to the UST Proforce and now wouldn’t part with the club.

GolfSpy-I appreciate your comments and it all holds true, except for the adjustability factor. Last time I looked you cannot adjust your club during a round, only before or after. Yes, if a course has more doglegs left or right the adjustability factor might help the average player, but I believe it is getting away from what golf is all about-the ability of the golfer to adapt to his surroundings and situation and play his/her best. I have hit the G15 and all the others and the ones I personally like best do not have the adjustability factor.

Well just like early comment about when bigger heads began to come out they were looked down upon…but in time you will see that it is the preferred technology. Yes we all know you cannot adjust during the round that is not what we were referring to. But we all go through tendencies over a season of having days where we draw the ball more or fade the ball more.

And this is the main benefit for the average to above average golfer with adjustability.

Now in regards to the OEM’s it is a HUGE benefit because of R&D costs. They no longer have to make a special head for every pro under contract…that has special fitting needs (LIE, LOFT, etc). This has saved them a fair amount of money in regards to development costs.

Why would anyone use an adjustable driver? None of the other clubs are adjustable and as a plus handicap player I never saw much effect in adjusting the weights. I think Tom Kite said somrthing like, hit a few practise balls to find out which way the ball is going that day and go play.

Craig – take a look at the comment we made on Lance’s comment about adjustability. And your reasoning makes no sense to me. Just because other clubs are not adjustable is your reasoning for not having any club adjustable?? If there was no benefit to it then every club company would not be following in the others footsteps. And yes that WILL include Ping in years to come. And by the way you said “never saw much effect in adjusting the weights” we are not referring to moving weights…we all know that with the current technology with the MWT that it does not work…but adjustable heads tech DOES work 100%.

I like this driver a bunch too. For whatever reason, it is the only one that makes my Nike 5000 nervous. Two years from now when PING allows the price to drop, the NIke will be real nervous.

Like I can stick to a driver for two years.
      Thanks for the review!

I purchased the G15 a few weeks ago and now have 4 rounds of hitting with it. Prior to my purchase, I had hit with it about 5 times on the simulator, where it was far and away the best driver that I have tested in terms of carry distance. However, I’m just now getting comfortable with it on a real course. One factor is that the weather in Canada is a bit cooler now, and this affects the carry distance significantly. Thus I can’t say that the club has shown its true ability yet. I think its appearance is very good, and the wider look helps to give confidence of a solid hit.

What I never saw in the simulator was a fade / slice from the G15, which showed itself in the first three rounds that I have played with it. I have worked on making the right corrections to my swing, and today’s round was closer to what I hoped is the standard for the future. Can’t wait until next year with the warmer temperatures to really see what this club can do.

Perhaps a link at the end of the review that would take the user to a page where they could find all of the details of the tests would be cool. That way it wont deter someone from reading the review but the guys who want to know exactly how it matched up against other clubs and for what players, they will be able to see that. To a technical person like myself, unless you have the data to prove it, a review is no better than marketing from the company itself.

Mark – your link idea is a great idea and would solve the “issue”.

I find that golf sites and magazines (Mygolfspy may be included) tend not to want to list results like this for fear that it might portray any of their potential advertisers in a less than desirable way.

For example, what if the Titleist 909 D2 came in 12th out of 15th. Or their Cobra product outperforms the more expensive Titleist product. All of a sudden Titleist would prefer not to advertise with MyGolfSpy and possibly exert pressure on their subsidiaries or companies that they influence to avoid MyGolfSpy.

I am not saying this is what is preventing MyGolfSpy from publishing detailed results, but it is a golf industry problem with so few vendors. This affects many other industries as well. You would almost have to eliminate the advertising influence like Consumer Reports.

      That’s my thoughts.

None of the major OEM’s advertise with us…they are still all in fear for the exact reason you spoke about. Although that is not the reason MyGolfSpy does not list the results. We have found in our analytical software that most of you guys do not read the articles if they on and on so we decided to get to the point.

But from now on we totally agree we will get to the point but still include results. Thank you guys for all the feedback.

I think it would be nice to have a little more detail on the testing samples and results. It doesn’t tell me much if you say 50% of the people chose it first when that means that 5 out of 10 picked it. It sounds like a large gap when you say it was 50% and the next was 30% but really that’s 5 people to 3 out of a sample size of 10. Were they higher handicappers who chose the ping or lower? Or was it a range? There must have been at least one club that was selected by nobody as the favorite, which was that? I can report data to achieve the results I want by leaving out information. I’m not saying that this test was flawed, just that if you’re trying to give the most “unbiased” reviews and be the “most informed golf blog on the planet” you’re gonna need to include some more details than a sample size of 10 players with no background data. That’s just my opinion….

I agree with your comment s Mark. Problem is that we have found that hardly anyone reads the reviews if we make them a mile long. So we try to get to the point as quickly as possible without losing the readers attention.

But I agree with you and we will figure out a way to give more info in regards to the results and still have it not get too boring for the average reader. Feel free to add any suggestions.

With my job I get to try all the drivers at all the price points, and this is the one in my bag. I actually think you’ve been a little unkind on the looks of the club at address, as I find it an attractive head. Everything else is spot on. It’s very forgiving, and long. really long. Much longer than the Rapture V2 and FT9 that it’s kicked out of the bag.
