BEST SPIKED GOLF SHOES OF 2022
Want the most traction possible? If so, you must consider our picks for the Best Spiked Golf Shoe of 2022.
Even though the category of the spiked golf shoe is shrinking because the industry is trending towards spikeless, there are still golfers who live and die by the spike. These test results are for you.
If the kicks in our top five don’t suit you, there’s no doubt our research can help you refine your choices for new spiked golf shoes this year.
WINNER – FOOTJOY TOUR ALPHA
When it comes to overall performance, the FootJoy Tour Alpha put on quite a show. This spiked shoe was consistent across multiple key metrics, making it the undisputed winner of the 2022 Most Wanted Spiked Shoe Test. Full results are in the table below but this is how the Tour Alpha performed in each category.
- 2nd in stability
- 6th in comfort
- 2nd in elements
- 1st in traction
MOST COMFORTABLE SHOE - FootJoy HyperFlex BOA
The Footjoy HyperFlex BOA golf shoe is the most comfortable shoe in the test. Its sock like fitting, paired with the BOA tightening system truly allows the shoe to mold to you foot. With its textile upper you think it wouldn't be good in wet conditions. The HyperFlex BOA has a 2 year waterproof guarantee to put your mind at ease.
EXPERT TIP - Sizes From Country To Country
Most companies have sizes that are compatible with one another from country to country. However, some companies like adidas have only a half size difference from UK to US. Be diligent and read the conversion label to get the right size. You can double check, here.
Other Notable Performers
adidas ZG21 – The ZG21 has many high-performing features, excelling in comfort, elements and traction. The adidas ZG21 also has Boost Technology to ensure you get the best performance out of each shot as well as an easy walk. So if you care only about those categories, you should definitely take a look at this golf shoe.
FootJoy HyperFlex BOA – The HyperFlex BOA is the most comfortable shoe in the test. It may lack a little in stability but it makes up for it in all other categories tested. So if you’re looking for a “sock-like” feeling shoe that has a waterproof mesh for those rainy rounds, you should consider this shoe.
The Best Spiked Shoes of 2022 – Features That Matter
Comfort
Comfort should be the top priority no matter which shoe you’re considering. It’s important to understand that comfort starts with proper sizing. If you’re not wearing the correct size, you’re sacrificing comfort and performance.
If you’re looking for the most comfortable shoe, try the HyperFlex Boa by FootJoy. Other shoes notable for comfort are the New Balance Fresh Foam X Defender and the Skechers Go Golf Pro 5 Hyper.
Traction
Seldom is a quality golf shot preceded by a slip. Not all spiked shoe soles are created equal. Some designs provide significantly better traction than others. If you play in wet conditions often, this should be integral to your shoe decision.
If all-weather traction is your main concern, try the FootJoy Tour Alpha or the adidas Tour360 22.
DIY Spikes
Did you know that you can turn any regular shoe into a golf shoe? GolfKicks spikes screw into any shoe, allowing you to merge your everyday style with traction on the course.
Stability
You don’t want your foot vulnerable to slippage and spillover but you still want some freedom of movement. A perfectly stable shoe should consist of a molded heel cup along with structured mid-sole support. Weight distribution is also important during your swing. The right amount of foot freedom (lateral movement) is necessary to achieve correct weight distribution.
Golfers seeking the ultimate in stability should consider the Sqairz Speed and FootJoy Tour Alpha.

MOST STABLE SHOE - SQAIRZ Speed
Those who want to connect with the ground more need to consider the SQAIRZ Speed golf shoe. Its wide base keeps your center of gravity where it should be while helping you get to your lead side. All you have to do is put on the shoes and the shoes do the rest.
Expert Tips
- Not everyone needs the most stable golf shoe on the market. Try on different shoe designs to determine what level of stability works best for you.
- If you require more stability, look for designs with some form of wrap technology in the mid-foot section to help keep your feet anchored.
- If something doesn’t feel quite right in an otherwise comfortable shoe, it may be worth trying the BOA/DISC alternative if offered. These closure systems often increase the cost of the shoe.
- While style preferences will vary among golfers, comfort is an absolute. Don’t sacrifice it for any reason.
- Have your foot measured to ensure you’re buying the proper size.

Best Spiked Golf Shoes of 2022 – FAQ
Q: How much should I spend on a shoe?
A: It’s possible to find well-designed, fully featured golf shoes for around $105. That said, the majority of top performers, including our choice for Best Stability, are closer to $200. As with anything else, your frequency of play should factor in the decision. Golfers who play just a few times a year may be able to find a suitable offering for less. Just don’t skimp on comfort to save a buck.
Q: Can I wear my spiked shoes on concrete surfaces?
A: Yes. However, if you walk on hard, rough surfaces like concrete or asphalt too much you will wear down the spikes and need to replace them more often. It could lead to less traction.
Q: Do I need to buy golf shoes? Can I play golf in regular shoes?
A: You can. But the correct footwear will contribute to your game. If you’re not playing for score, you can transform any shoe into a spiked golf shoe with screw-in spikes called GolfKicks. Discuss among yourselves.
Q: Is BOA/DISC technology better than laces?
A: Some golfers prefer these modern closure systems to traditional laces but it’s certainly not a universal preference. Users of BOA and DISC report a tendency for their shoes to loosen during a round and, while it’s not a big deal to re-tighten, it can be an annoyance. Also consider that if a shoelace breaks, it’s easily replaceable whereas warranty replacements for other closure systems can take time.

6 months agoHands down the Callaway Coronado crush every shoe in comfort after a year they are still comfortable. The insole wraps around your foot and it conforms to it
David Terrie
8 months agoIf laces are for suckers, are Lock Laces a good upgrade to laces?
Hank
6 months agoUntil I got my HyperFlex BOA shoes, I used Lock Laces in all my golf shoes. Makes them easy to put on and take off and get a tight fit with a little stretch as you walk. I recommend them over normal laces.
MarkM
8 months agoI’ve been playing in the FootJoy HyperFlex BOA this year and can definitely say they are very comfortable. It seems they are the next evolution of the FreeStyle shoes, which I was a big fan of. I absolutely love the BOA system and so far the waterproofing is A+ as well.
If you can get over the looks (I have the black/grey and hey the Freestyle came in that frog colored model …) they are a very nice shoe.
Tess
8 months agoI agree, my Hyperflex Boa shoes are like wearing slippers. Light, stable and great traction. A bit modern looking for this old guy but playing partners haven’t given me any grief yet. Love the Boa laces, quick on and off. Although, my pant cuffs rest on top of the adjustment knob regularly which distracts me a bit. Otherwise, highly recommended.

9 months agoI was wondering where weight fits into the discussion. For walkers, this is somewhat important, I assume there are tradeoffs between stability and weight.
In other shoes type like running and jumping, there are technologies that return or transfer energy from the ground. Do some golf shoes accomplish the same thing during the swing or walking? Is that the next step in golf shoes?
KC
9 months agoIs the “Elements” category objective or subjective and how is the score determined?
Paul
9 months agoI was wondering the same. Would love to see a test to determine which shoes fail submersion depth and if they fail or how long it takes too fail. Basically, testing their waterproofness.
Nate
10 months agoCan we compare scores of the 2022 reviewed shoes to scores of the 2021 or are they only comparable within their year? I’m trying to figure out if I want the FJ Premiere series Packard or Adidas Tour360 and would love to compare the numbers if possible.
CD Laughlin
11 months agoIs there any warranty info on the Adidas Tour360 22? Being the ‘SPIKEMORE’ technology is brand new, I’d assume Adidas would have some sort of program setup. I really can’t imagine a company would push a $225-$250 product with non-removable, plastic spikes in their golf shoes with no warranty for customers… or are they? Regardless, my love story with Adidas golf shoes may be sunsetting.

11 months agoAny idea on the width sizes available for the Sqairz shoes?
LD
10 months agoBelieve they only have the one width which is plenty wide for me. I wear a 10 wide and the size 10s in Sqairz fit great. I have several pairs and they are my go-to golf shoe.
Fingerling
11 months agoSo Adidas Tour360 wins best spikless (traction + comfort) a weak ago, and its said the company categorises its shoe as spikless since the spikes are not removable. Now it’s tested in the spiked line up? Can you make up your mind if the shoe is spikless or not?? It can not be both.
Tony
11 months agoThese still exist??? The key metric is still missing – do they hold up (durability) for walkers?
ian barton
11 months agoOnce again a shoe review that misses the most important thing to average golfers. How long do they last? Are they still waterproof once the guarantee runs out and if not we don’t know until its too late.
If they do leak after 9 months do any of the replacements get a full 12 month guarantee or just the 3 months left from the first leaky pair.
I have never seen a long term test and thought as MGS do comprehensive testing then long life should be included or at least update the results once time has passed.

11 months agoAmen!!!! I bought Walter Hagen shoes and they have been very good and the price is outstanding! You won’t have to take out a loan .!!! These look very close to Walter’s .. (Weight, water proof, comfort, style with , spikeless with ortho insoles) But I will stick with Walter’s …
Tony Dahle
11 months agoHad a pair of Skechers that were supposed to be waterproof for a year. after about 6 months, they were no longer waterproof. Sent pictures and shoes in, they replaced them with a new pair, upgrade, since they no longer made that shoe. Tried to replace them with a spikeless pair, but i wouldn’t have it. Now i am wondering when the warranty runs out! Play every morning in dew…..need the waterproof!

11 months agoHow do you think they could possibly test this?

11 months agocant seem to locate the sketchers model that you recommended ..
Kenny B
11 months agoWow! Under Armour releases a new shoe and goes from #1 in 2021 to next to last.
From the MGS 2021 Best Spiked Golf Shoe … “When it comes to overall performance, the Under Armour HOVR Drive put on quite a show. This spiked shoe was consistent across multiple key metrics, making it the undisputed winner of the 2021 Most Wanted Spiked Shoe Test.”
2nd in stability
6th in comfort
5th in elements
2nd in style
5th in traction
In 2022 the Under Armour HOVR Drive 2 ratings…
13th in stability
15th in comfort
12th in elements
No style rating
3rd in traction
I can only assume that (A) Under Armour made a bad shoe; or (B) All other brands made magnificent improvements in their shoes; or (C) MGS used different testers. Probably C.
Bryce
11 months agoThere’s also D: All of the above. I have the old model of the HOVR Drives, and was waiting to see this review because no one near me stocks the new ones. Idk what all goes into shoe design, but if it’s anything like crossfit shoes (my other major shoe expense) the smallest details can make or break a shoe.
For example, Reebok changed the upper material density of the foam in one of theirs and it made them nearly unwearable. The next year they made the foam a bit softer and changed the direction of the upper material, and the shoe was one of the best they’ve ever made.
Andre
11 months agoOr option E:
UA sent MGS a pair of shoes 2021 that were “out of spec” just like Ping did when it did the opposite on the most wanted driver list and went from worst to first.
I’m Sure we will see MGS remove them from one of the lists soon. 😂
Rooo
7 months agoI just replaced my HOVRs after one season because the inside heel totally disintergrated,, the show was great but this kinda defect warrants U/A to go to the bottom of the list. Replaced with Foot Joy who have a two year warranty against this kind of deficiency .
Max R
11 months agoI tried the Sketchers link provided but when I went to it (and beyond) there isn’t any reference to that shoe, at all!
Harry Nodwell
11 months agoSkechers will be releasing the shoe soon. A few companies had to push their release dates because of inventory issues
Matt Gallo
11 months agoI love starting my golf season with a fresh pair of shoes. Needed this to help save some time!
John
11 months agoI have the Sqairz Speed and can definitely vouch for it’s stability, the best I’ve found for sure. I will say though, while I do have wide feet (But not 3EE) they are still a tad narrower than I would like. Also, I wear an 11.5 in Footjoys and so that is what size their site suggested. The tip of the toe on the shoe doesn’t have much height so I can feel my toe nail touching it ever so slightly. When I first tried them on I didn’t really notice it but after playing in them I did. I think going up to a 12 would have solved this. I unfortunately I didn’t play a round in them until after the 30day return/exchange window otherwise I would have paid the $12 exchange fee. Another thing to note, I can only wear these when cart riding. I recently started walking most rounds and found that I began to experience plantar fasciitis symptoms when wearing these shoes. Therefore these are being relegated to cart only days….

11 months agoNo G/fore or Puma in the test?
MIZUNOCORGI
11 months agoThey haven’t released any new product that I’m aware of this year so I’m guessing that’s what the issue is. I am really enjoying my Puma IGNITE PWRADAPTS.
Kevin
9 months agog/fore doesn’t even offer spiked shoes.
Adam
11 months agoSo the #1 shoe you can’t even buy???
Harry Nodwell
11 months agoAccording to FootJoy it will be available soon. Unfortunately, we don’t have any power when it comes to releasing their products.
John Freedman
11 months agoPerhaps it is a philosophical question. But if the spikes on the ADIDAS TOUR360 22 cannot be replaced, aren’t they then just another kind of spikeless shoe? Once the spikes on those shoes wear down and don’t grip well anymore you would then have to replace the shoes, no?
Peter
11 months agoThey were originally included in the spikeless review and then they decided to redact that and put them here. The tread is far too aggressive for a traditional “spikeless” shoe but they technically aren’t removable so they could be considered spikeless. In the end, this is where they are.
