Top U.S. Golf Courses by Region

Fundamentally, ranking golf courses is a subjective exercise. Better players often prefer more challenging layouts. Less skilled golfers might appreciate wider fairways with fewer forced carries.

That said, the validity of any individual review isn’t tied to whether that golfer has a degree in golf course architecture or a preference for certain types of grasses.

If you’re a golfer, your opinion matters.

To build our list of the best golf destinations, we turned to TheGrint and to real golfers just like you.

ABOUT THEGRINT’S RANKINGS

To generate our rankings, we leveraged data from TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat-tracking service that also allows golfers to rate the courses they play. Think of it as something similar to Yelp for golf courses.

Here are the pertinent details:

  • Ranking derived from more than 300,000 golf course reviews from golfers just like you.
  • Only reviews from the previous year (2020) are used.
  • Only considered courses with a minimum of 50 reviews.
  • Golfers considered course conditions and overall experience as ranking criteria.

Based on reader feedback, we took the data for all courses in the United States and broke it down by region. Over the next several weeks, we’ll work our way from the Pacific Coast Highway to the Eastern Seaboard.

We-Ko-Pa and Quintero are hands down the best on this list. I knock Troon because for a top 10 in my opinion I would prefer no houses in my scenic view. With that said the track is still top notch. I have played TPC and outside the coolness of saying you played #16 and walking where the pros walk it just a solid track overall. By no means is it #1…..if ur using the grit then it’s most likely people who travel to AZ want to play the course on TV and have no idea about some of the other gems in AZ.

Stadium course is not awesome. Played in the spring and the greens were so hard my wedges didn’t leave pitch marks. Rolled smooth but who wants to see irons bouncing off the greens?

Could not agree more, it has to be ranked so high because people feel that playing a course pro’s play makes up for something but service was mediocre and course was extremely forgettable. But if that’s what thousands of Grinters say who am I to argue. I just hit 100 courses played on my Grint app and I will say there are some rankings that are flat out bizarre. Great courses with crap rating and crap courses with 96.5 rating. Hard to say what people are thinking so that being considered this list probably turned out all right.

TPC isn’t even in the top 50, this list is B.S.

TPC #1? Come on. Seriously. Shouldn’t even be in the top 10.

Have played a number of these, though the Stadium course is very nice, it’s hardly the #1 course in the southwest. In Arizona alone, Quintero, Gold Canyon (Dinosaur Course) and a few others are better and offer a much better bang for the buck.

100% agree! Dinosaur Course is an amazing outing and Quintero is simply outstanding!

Any list that includes WeKoPa Cholla, but leaves out Saguaro, loses complete credibility. And TPC Stadium #1? LOL.

Agreed but we have to remember this isn’t MGS list, this is actual humans that somehow think TPC is better than quintero or Seguaro. Boggles my mind but they have spoken. Old Mac is rated higher than Trails in Bandon, I can’t figure that one out either.

Does the Southwest not include Nevada and Utah? Some good courses on here but the Stadium course at No. 1? Nope.

I’ve played all but La Canterra Resort. They’re all excellent courses, but I wouldn’t say they are the best in Arizona. We have many that are better, but they are private courses, so they don’t meet the rating criteria you provided. I’ll have to play La Canterra Resort while the rates are still low.

      Southwest:
Sand Hollow and LV Paiute are great indeed. Very surprised Wolf Creek did not make top 10; easily the most fantastic design I’ve had the privilege to play!

      Phoenix Area:
Did not know about La Cantera, so will need to try it out.
Quintero and Wickenburg Ranch are indeed top tracks.
Troon North, TPC Scottsdale and Wekopa have always felt overrated and overpriced to me; they’re good but others like Boulders South course, Eagle Mountain, Sunridge Canyon are all more scenic, more fun to play and more reasonably priced.
Grayhawk I need to try out next time I’m in the area.

Chris” Is there a map like the one y’all provided for The Top 10 Courses of the West? The one in the article is the one from the West article and, not the Southwest. Thanks…
