7 Questions You MUST Ask Before Clicking “Buy” On Used Golf Clubs Online

If you’ve never bought used golf clubs online, it’s not as intimidating as it might seem. With a little research and the right questions, you can find high-quality gear at a fraction of the original cost. Whether you’re a beginner building your first bag or a seasoned player looking to save money on an upgrade, buying used can be a smart move. Just make sure you’re not rushing into the wrong deal. Here are seven key questions to ask before you click “Buy.”

Do I actually know my specs?

Before buying used golf clubs, know your ideal shaft flex, length and lie angle. A professional fitting can give you key insights like swing speed and spin rates, helping you understand what type of equipment suits your game. After a fitting, you don’t need to commit to a specific brand or model. Ensure you walk away with your specs to shop smarter and more confidently.

What condition is the club actually in?

Make sure you’re looking at photos of the actual product, not just stock images. Check for deep scratches, dents, rust or worn grooves as these can affect performance.

Light surface marks, like small scuffs on the top of a driver or minor wear from clubs rubbing together in the bag, are normal and usually just cosmetic.

Will the clubs need to be re-gripped?

Try zooming in on the grip photos to look for visible signs of wear, discoloration, cracks or tears. If regripping is necessary, make sure you add that to your total budget for the new club.

Some online retailers put a new grip on for you but it may not match the rest of your set.

What is the seller’s return policy?

Before purchasing, make sure you confirm how long you have to test the clubs. Pay close attention to who covers return shipping. Sometimes, the costs are so high that it won’t make sense to return.

Some shops give 14-30 days to send the club back but you’ll often end up with store credit.

Are there any hidden costs?

If you find a used club that looks unusually inexpensive, there may be more to the story. A bargain price could mean that there are shipping, handling, taxes or other costs you haven’t calculated yet.

Always get a clear shipping quote before finalizing a purchase.

Are these clubs actually right for my ability level?

Even though blade irons are pretty, that doesn’t mean they are a good fit for your game. Don’t let your ego get in the way when you buy golf clubs. Purchase something that matches your current skill level. If you have questions about the performance of a specific club, check out the MyGolfSpy Buyer’s Guides.

Is this seller trustworthy?

There are several large marketplaces for purchasing used golf clubs, some of which have individual sellers. Look for the seller ratings and reviews.

Serial numbers can also confirm the authenticity of the clubs. When you can, stay with reputable online platforms like Global Golf, 2nd Swing Golf, Callaway Pre-Owned, eBay, Golf Avenue and Rock Bottom Golf.

Final thoughts

Buying used golf clubs online can be a great way to upgrade your bag on a budget. Look for top-performing clubs from the last few years and make sure that what you are buying is an upgrade that your game needs.

I’m fortunate enough that we have a great local golf shop that has a HUGE selection of new and used clubs.

Callaway Pre-owned doesn’t show actual pictures, just stock photos. They are a reputable dealer for sure, but you don’t really know what your getting until you open the box.
