FORME. Driven By Science! Review

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried

The Forme Ace Tee, a therapeutic shirt.

What is Forme?

Forme is the brainchild of Dr. Stephen Liu, orthopedic surgeon and sympathetic son. When his mother was undergoing treatment for cancer, Dr. Liu often helped her breathe by pulling her shoulders back, thus opening up her lungs.

Eventually, Dr. Liu created a team of intellectuals, doctors, scientists and technology pioneers to employ the same strategy for others. With athletes in mind, Forme created the Ace tee and sports bra, a wearable therapeutic designed to correct and train alignment of the spine/neck/shoulder/hip and increase joint movement, reduce injuries, boost recovery and provide better breathing for higher oxygenation.

Why Are We Trying It?

Simple. After successful results with U.S. Olympic teams, NBA, MLB and NHL athletes and both the men’s and women’s U.S. national rugby teams, Forme is beginning to infiltrate professional golf. Jared Wolfe, Rohan Ramnath and Harold Varner III have been using Forme.

“The shirt provides instant feedback,” says Wolfe. “I can feel my neck relax and all the tension on my back and neck is gone. It doesn’t just help when standing up but also when I sit down. I like to wear it mostly when I travel because it helps with my recovery.”

Varner also uses Forme products to ease the effects of traveling. “I wear the shirt when I’m flying mostly from event to event. Sometimes I even sleep in it. The biggest difference I see in my body is good posture from wearing the shirt.”

Can a shirt really make that much of a difference?

Product Expert

Hi, I’m Harry and I am a professional golf product tester. (Yes, they exist.) I actually test a lot of things at MyGolfSpy and play professionally when I’m not checking and comparing specs on gloves, rangefinders, bags, ball retrievers, etc. You can call me the Director of Product Testing here at MGS. You can also just call me Harry. That’s fine, too.

Explaining the Forme Wearable Therapeutic Shirt

The Forme wearable therapeutic shirt claims to pull your shoulders back and put you in the correct posture. But how?

The shirt is constructed of two different materials that are stitched together. Think “thermal wind shirt” and you have the general idea. The inner shirt is fused across the shoulder blades, creating an elastic-band sensation which is always contracted. When you put the shirt on, the fused section wants to remain tight no matter how broad you are across the shoulders. This makes your shoulders pull back to their natural position, forcing your body and diaphragm to open.

Find it hard to visualize how the shirt could help with your spine and neck alignment? Dr. Liu offers the follow analogy.

“Think about a fishing pole. When you have a fish on the line, there’s a lot of pressure on the line. The pole bends, pulling the head of the pole down. This is what happens with your head over time. Your head naturally bends downward and you start developing a hunchback. Now think of when you pull back against the fish and bring the pole towards you. The pole is straight for a few seconds. The pole is back to its natural position. Then the fish pulls back again and the pole bends once more. This happens to your spine and neck but our therapeutic shirt pulls everything back with no effort and helps restore order in your spine and neck alignment.”

What Dr. Liu has designed is a natural and sustainable solution for anyone with back and neck issues. The therapeutic wearable shirt trains your muscles to always be in the correct position which helps cure your back and neck pain.

Using Therapeutic Shirt By Forme

The best thing about Forme? It takes almost no effort.

All you have to do is wear the shirt and the rest takes care of itself.

I can hear you say this is b******t!

I’m the most skeptical person when it comes to new innovative products promising you the world. I was on the same page as you doubters. It’s all BS until it’s not. We get products in every day that promise ridiculous claims. “Hit it 10 yards more!” “This tee will make you hit it straighter!” “We have the most centered cores on the market!” I’ve heard them all.

The difference is that Forme actually DELIVERED on its claims.

Seriously, all you have to do is put on the shirt and it pulls your shoulders back into the correct posture. It’s that simple.

Does It Work?

Forme does what it claims to do, at least in the preliminary testing.

I haven’t worn the shirt for long enough to provide an accurate and truthful experience on long-term recovery and alignment. But what I can tell you is I have no doubt it will correct my slumped shoulders, forward neck leaning and overall bad posture. After doing my research and conducting interviews on Forme wearable therapeutic shirts, I keep getting the same response: “It helped me.”

Sheldon Roberts, a trainer for Urban Golf Performance, uses Forme and has also incorporated Forme into his client regimens.

“When I first put on the shirt, I got instant feedback. The longer I wore the product, the better improvement I saw in my own flexibility, rotation and posture. Not to mention the better positions I was able to get my body into. So I made some of my clients wear the shirt during their training sessions.”

Roberts also shared some of his clients’ results.

Final Thoughts

After testing the Forme wearable therapeutic shirt for over a month, I would buy it without question. When they come out with any other products, I will be jumping on the bandwagon. I am all for anything that can help me have better posture and mobility. For me, the most important part is the prevention of long-term issues like a hunched back or neck issues. Yes, the shirt costs $159 but, in my option, it’s worth every cent.

Wash the shirt on a cold cycle and air dry it and you’re good to go. There are a couple of points that I want to add before you buy this product. If you have broad shoulders like me (normally a U.S. large) I would purchase an XL. You can wear a shirt underneath and put the Forme shirt over top and still get the same effect. If you don’t and stay with the same size you normally wear, you might get a slight pinch under the armpit. But if you can live with that, then crack on, mate.

I use mine while at my desk and wore it while writing this article. You can take it to the gym, wear it while walking or running, whatever. Potentially, you could be saving thousands of dollars in the long run on medical bills and drugs by avoiding back and neck issues.

The Forme shirt has 18 patents available with 10 more in the works.

If you prefer everything you wear to have a classic golf style, within the next few weeks Forme will be introducing a therapeutic polo and shorts to help with spine, neck and hip alignment. However, the shirt is available NOW!

Have played two rounds wearing this shirt. Lot’s of factors at work here as I try and improve my overall game but both rounds resulted in very good scores with the last round generating a personal best on that particular course. A three stroke gain. ! I can’t help but think that the improved posture contributed to the result.

After about a week of wearing it, the shirt definitely loosened my trapezius muscles (muscle between neck and shoulder blades). when it was constantly tight. I don’t know about the breathing and focus claims– but it has helped. Only bummer is that my FSA turned down my claim for reimbursement.

As a professional golfer, I can confidently saying after using Forme posture shirt for over the past year it has significantly help my recovery between rounds and events. I used to chronically wake up with cricks in my neck, especially after travel days. Now I slip this on before every flight, car ride and after a round. My shoulder/upper back/ neck health has never been better. I find myself staying in good posture following the use of the shirt. Everyone could benefit from wearing this.

I’ve been using the Forme technology for a handful of months now.

The biggest thing for me is that it helps to keep my right scap in a more retracted position throughout the golf swing without having to think about it too much. These shirts really help guys with limited thoracic mobility like me by helping get our bodies in more optimal positions to produce more stable and consistent swings.

Maybe a little off subject. My dentist said my bite was going to chip my front teeth. He made a retainer to make my jaw muscles retrain my bite. I only had to wear it for two weeks and it did the job. So I can see that this tee could train your muscles to improve your posture for the better.

Interesting concept but the most messed up website I’ve ever been on. Customer service is very slow to respond and when I try to order a product that appears to be in stock the website won’t let me order it or get on a wait list notification list. This is how young companies destroy momentum and lose potential customers!

I was really skeptical but know I have horrible posture and it’s only getting worse working 10 hour days on the computer so I tried it out. It s was really tight just in the chest, felt awful, and weird for the first little bit and I was disappointed, but after a half an hour so I got used to it and by the end of the day I really liked it. My shoulders were pretty sore like after a moderate workout so I think the promise that it helps strengthen muscles may be onto something. I don’t think it looks very good (at least on me) so I’m using it as an undershirt while I work on the computer. I’ll post an update in a few weeks with “longer term” impacts but I’m just glad I actually don’t feel like a sucker for buying a $160 undershirt like I figured I would. Thanks for the review/ad Harry!

thank you for your feedback. I enjoy reading MGS and all the comments. . It brings out the best golf products. so glad Forme is working for you. Btw, this wearable is not just a shirt, it is a med device build into a wearable attire. The outer layer is made of wood pulp silky fabric, and the inner layer is made of mesh technology(well shown in the article). Company did a good job crafting a med device into an eco-friendly wearable attire, and to be fair labeling Forme as therapeutic wearable is more real. It helps people and players with injuries and help them recovery quicker. I bought a few for myself and for my golf buddies.

Do you guys wear this shirt on the golf course or only off course.? I ask because our club requires collared shirts for playing golf. Thus, if it is for wearing on the course, I am out of luck unless they also make a collared shirt. I am 65 with knee, back, shoulder and elbow pain (have done PT for all of these over the years and have had three knee surgeries). So, I am always looking for something to help. I do a stretching and weight regime every day. Is this something I should wear for that.

      Hi Hac,

      Thank you for your feedback.

We would recommend you wear Forme off the course for at least 8 hours a day , and try to wear for sleep. You will have less stiffness in the morning. Our Pro Hip Shorts will be launched in June. It will provide additional lower body alignment, strength, and recovery.

If you would like to order a polo shirt to wear on the course ( will not be launched until summer) please email [email protected]. Forme’s
customer service will help you to order a polo shirt straight from our US factory.

I am a Professional Golfer who has competed on the Korn Ferry and PGA Tour Canada the past 4 years. I began having neck and back pain at the end of 2018 and struggled with the injury for years. I was on the endless search to get out of pain, and was seeing a PT and Chiro consistently. Nothing was sticking. I would be pain free for a few weeks then a simple tweak and I was back in pain. I was lucky enough to meet Dr. Liu in person and try this shirt. I was skeptical as I think most are, but noticed an immediate difference. I use the shirt for long drives, plane rides, and after workouts to keep myself in ideal positions. Do I think the shirt will magically heal you and make you better? No, do I believe the product will help? Absolutely yes. This is not just a tool for athletes. This is something the average person can use and make a significant impact. We live in a hunched over position and with this device it helps while also making you more aware when you are not wearing the product.

I’ll try to shed some light on this, yes the data I provided is limited to 2 subjects. They are 2 clients that I train that are on the opposite ends of the spectrum from what I work with. One being a doctor who is 60 but in amazing shape and a 5 handicap, the other being a 30 yr old with scoliosis, does not actually play golf.
The data is collected by running movement screens which I do with all people I see and doing reassessments, I only highlighted those specific results as they have more of a direct correlation to the training that we do along with using forme.
It’s not a regular “posture” shirt, it is not trying to pull the shoulder blades into retraction, it allows the shoulder blades to sit “downward” which will allow for better thoracic rotation, extension and external rotation for the shoulders. As golfers we know how important those factors are.
Hopefully that helps clarify for you.

Does using this in a round violate rule 4.3.b, without a doctor stipulating it was needed? (For example, I was informed by the USGA that using the ReliefGrip™ golf gloves from Bionic Gloves for arthritis was ok as long as I could provide proof of an arthritic condition from my doctor.)

      b. Equipment Used for Medical Reasons

      (1) Medical Exception. A player is not in breach of Rule 4.3 if he or she uses equipment to help with a medical condition, so long as:

The player has a medical reason to use the equipment, and

The Committee decides that its use does not give the player any unfair advantage over other players.

      (2) Tape or Similar Coverings. A player may use adhesive tape or a similar covering for any medical reason (such as to prevent an injury or help with an existing injury), but the tape or covering must not:

      Be applied excessively, or

Help the player more than is necessary for the medical reason (for example, it must not immobilize a joint to help the player swing the club).

A player who is uncertain about where or how tape or similar coverings may be applied should ask the Committee for a ruling.

Thank you for your suggestions and they are very thoughtful. Forme is not intended for competition, unless you have shoulder or spine derangements or breathing problems. Forme is effective for golf training, for recovery, and for injury prevention, as many have point out. It does not restrict your motion, unlike tapes or braces, but will instantly correct posture, and reduce neck and shoulder tension upon wear
(published data). It had near 90% comfort rating by Harvard division one athletes (published data).

Our posterior elements (muscles on you neck, back and buttock ) are naturally weak due to poor posture. Forme is made to correct and train your posterior elements. It can be worn like a regular attire, for daily wear and even for sleep. After a few hours of wear your shoulder and back muscles will adapt to a better body alignment. Some people may have sore muscles for a day, but after few months of consistent wear your back will be stronger and slouching is never an issue. You will have achieved the perfect FORME. Hope this helps to clarify reviewers concern. Thank you Harry for a thorough review to better our wellness. We all want to stand, sit taller, and play forever.

The price point does seem high for a shirt, but it has had a tangible impact on my health and I would recommend giving it a shot. If you frame the product as a “wearable quality of life improvement” it seems much more reasonable than just another shirt.

Harry has done an amazing review here. As a spine surgeon with chronic neck pain, this is the only wearable product that I have recommended to anyone, because it relieved my neck pain after 3 weeks of consistent wear. It extended my career and allowed me to play better golf. Many of my patients, who rehabbed with Forme wearable, have avoided a costly and risky spine surgery.

Harry’s review took into consideration of cost; money cannot buy good health. Forme is a non-expensive, therapeutic attire for anyone seeking a rehab tool for golf recovery or back/neck pain.

Recovery products such as Theragun or SLS compression boots have a price tag over $500 dollars. They only offer temporary recovery. Forme corrects and trains your posture, helps you breathe better and takes your back/neck pain away. I am a good example along with many others.

How comfortable is this shirt in extreme heat and humidity, if it is tight (form fitting) it may be very uncomfortable, clingy as you need breathing space to remain cool. Might be really good in cold winter climates, keep you warm.

there are a lot of back posture corrector braces available for much cheaper (<$20) and provide more adjustability. They do work. I guess if you need it in a shirt form then this worth it.

      Reply

      StanZ

They don’t work though. I have two braces that only make things worse. The shirt creates an entirely different experience. It helps the body into the correct position far more than either of the braces I have. Keep in mind that in the body, everything is connected. So, when that cheapo brace pulls your shoulders back, it’s making your core worse. Also, it slips constantly. Thee shirt gives a much better overall feel without needing constant repositioning.

It’s interesting and seems like it would be great to wear to improve the posture of those of us that sit at a desk most days. If the shirt is doing the work though doesn’t that eventually make you weaker? Or is just reminding you to sit and stand up straight?

It doesn’t make you weaker at all. It trains the muscles to pull your shoulders back. After time, you won’t need the shirt because your muscle memory will be in full swing.

I have been a whoop wearer for 2+ years. For those who own a whoop know that it collects data, but does not help you correct it. Wearing Forme a long with the Whoop it gave me higher HRV, and higher recovery rates. The wearable is nothing like copper fit, Copper Fit and devices like that only compress and weakens the muscles underneath. Forme helps activate the muscles, and teaches you to have that mind & body connection. If you own a whoop already you should definitely give Forme a try and see the numbers yourself (higher HRV, and more often in the green for recovery and less strain during workouts while wearing Forme) . If you do not own a Whoop, Forme is the solution to everything whoop is going to tell you you’re doing wrong..

i would like to share another article recently published by Fast Company. it had good data on breathing. There are some long term reviews by pro golfers on the Forme website under product reviews, and very worthwhile for our wellness and injury prevention in golf.

Show me the science Ben, or show me the independent 3rd party testing to show that it actually helps. If I can see that then I may change mind and may even buy one to try. But just on the surface I don’t buy the science. Of course you do because you have a horse in this race obviously.

Sometimes you just gotta give things a chance Walter.

I don’t need science or rules to tell me that it’s OK to ground the club in a bunker, or to improve a lie in the rough. Just gotta trust, baby. Just trust.

      Hi Ben,
Just wondering, did you pay retail for the product? Do you get paid for endorsing it?
      Good luck in your career.

How comfortable is this? Do you feel something tugging at your back all the time? Does it impede your range-of-motion?
(The data provided by Sheldon Roberts is limited to two subjects, without any info on how it was obtained)

The shirt is very comfortable, it doesn’t restrict your range of motion at all. You put it on and you definitely feel and see the difference immediately.

I bought this after reading reviews on the website, many pros train and play golf with Forme with full motion. It is an amazing product! It has no compression but more on keeping shoulder blades stabilized and well tension upper back muscles as shown in this article. I am a 15 handicap golfer and this this wearable has reduced my neck pain or lower back stiffness. I tried PT for many years without help. Btw, my putting is better having using this for training.

Seems like it being a tight fit it would not be good for extreme heat and high humidity (no room for body to breathe) but very good in cold winter climates in winter, keep you warm.. If it works great idea (except not in summer heat, notice no testing in the article outside or even golfing), very expensive.

As mentioned in the article, if you have a broad upper body you should look into an XL and wear a shirt underneath. If not, normal sizing will be fine. I wouldn’t say tight at all. I have a slight covid bod going on and it wasn’t restricting/tight with a large. the two subjects were a 30 and 60 year old

Yes, it is a sample size. The info is obtained from clients that I work with, 1 being a doctor in his 60’s (in great shape). 1 being a 30 yr old female with scoliosis.
I ran movement screens on them, as I do with all clients and took parts of the movement screen to show, so yes, it is a sample size.
There is no tugging because it’s not like a regular posture shirt so there is no restriction.
      Hopefully that helps clarify.

Sorry, but I can’t buy the story line behind this BS. Show me the real science on this invention. You want to improve your posture or anything that has to do with your upper body, do the proper exercises, no t-shirt is going to do that for you, if anything it could weaken the exact muscles you need strengthened . This reminds of the cooperfit crap. But I’m sure there will be lots of people who fall for it and buy it.

Thats okay. Not many people have bought into this product. Only U.S. Olympic teams, NBA, MLB and NHL athletes, along with PGA golfers.

Yeah sure. And I’m certain they all paid retail for the product and no one made money off endorsements. And your test group consisted of two people, one 30 and one 60? That’s one hell of a statistical sample. This product may or may not help my 80 year old posture, but it will certainly hurt my pocketbook!
      Think I’ll pass for now.

Great article Harry. As I was reading the review I noticed how my head felt like it was being pulled down like a fishing pole. I would be open to trying their products. Question, was it comfortable to wear for an extended time, 8 hours.?

      Thanks

Harry, this sounds pretty interesting. I’m curious, did you try wearing the shirt while practicing golf at all?

I did use it while practicing and I didn’t even notice it pulling my shoulders back. But after looking at pictures, I saw an improvement in my set up.
