We Tried the SuperStroke Grip Rory Used at Augusta — Here’s What We Found

SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour Putter Grips

What We Like

  • Stable feel and reduced face manipulation
  • Comfortable tacky texture with no taper
  • Easy to install, great color options

What We Don't Like

  • Higher price for a grip

The Bottom Line

The SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour grip is a smart upgrade for golfers looking to improve putting consistency without changing putters. Its wider, no-taper design helps reduce face manipulation, promotes even grip pressure, and adds stability especially on mid-range putts.

This was my first time trying a SuperStroke putter grip.

I installed the Zenergy Pistol Tour myself with no issues. I’d been using a standard rubber Golf Pride pistol grip, which had seen better days, so I was more than happy to replace it.

First impressions

Before I even took the grip to the course to test, I can tell you I liked the color options and the overall feel of the Zenergy Pistol Tour. We were off to a good start. For the record, the color I put on my putter is not what McIlroy used at Augusta; his was a little more traditional.

On the course

The first thing I learned is that I didn’t realize how much I was manipulating the face of my putter until I switched.

Right after the install, I started leaving putts out to the right. I’d been shutting the face slightly with my old grip to compensate for how small it felt in my hands. Zenergy’s broader shape and flatter sides help me feel more square at impact and stable throughout the stroke. There’s less work to do, less face manipulation.

For the most part, putts inside 5 feet felt the same. From 10 to 15 feet, I’m making more and feeling more confident.

The slightly tacky texture lets me lower grip pressure without worrying about control, which has been one of the biggest benefits.

I haven’t tested the CounterCore weight system yet, but even without it, the grip has made a real difference. While $30 is more than I’ve ever spent on a putter grip, it still feels like a better option than replacing the whole putter.

SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour technology

The Zenergy Pistol Tour is packed with SuperStroke’s latest tech to enhance feel, feedback, and consistency:

  • Enhanced SPYNE Technology: An embossed ridge along the grip’s underside helps return the face to square at impact. It’s noticeable enough to help you get your hands in place without feeling in the way.
  • Multi-Zone Texturing: Soft polyurethane with strategically placed textures improves comfort and feedback where you need it most.
  • No Taper Technology: The grip’s parallel design promotes even grip pressure throughout the stroke to quiet overactive hands.
  • Tech-Port Compatibility: A hidden port in the grip allows for optional CounterCore weighting or tracking sensors (sold separately).

Tour validation

The Zenergy Pistol Tour isn’t just for amateur players. Rory McIlroy used it to win the career Grand Slam. His current putting stats on the PGA Tour are:

  • 9th in SG: Putting
  • 5th in Putting Average (1.690)
  • 2nd in One-Putt Percentage (46.3%)

No one’s saying the grip is the only reason, but it isn’t holding him back.

Final thoughts

The SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour grip is a premium putter grip upgrade for golfers seeking a more stable, controlled putting stroke without overhauling their equipment. Its wide, flat design helps reduce face manipulation and encourages consistent grip pressure. It’s a reminder that sometimes a new grip—not a new putter—is all it takes to get back on track. When was the last time you swapped out your putter grip?

Oh please–Rory putts like Rory because he is Rory, not because of the grip on his putter. That being said, I have a Pistol GT Tour on my Newport Select. Favorite putter grip: the EVNROLL Pistol, and it’s only $9.95!
