Just hit it for teh 1st time and although it was the wrong spec for me, it is pretty good. I would go as far as to say its the best they have produced since the FT-5… Solid to hit and the stock Project X shaft works well… Over priced, but I’m guessing thats due to the new Carbon crown… Compared to everything else they have out now, it should be a winner… They need it to be!!!

This thing looks sweet. I’m really hoping that they offer the 8.5 degree in the left handed model. They didn’t do that with any of the FT drives, which stunk. I’m curious to see how hot the face is on this and how light it feels.

Does that face look a little open in the address pic? Man why can’t they make neutral drivers anymore. It’s either closed for the standard models, open for the tour models, or adjustable. I would love a “tour” spec driver with a neutral face.

I recently went through an old Golf Magazine- the “club test” for fairway woods/hybrids (a joke, just like Golf Digest’s “Hot List”, but that’s for another time)- and something struck me. I thought I saw the new Diablo somewhere else and mistankingly believed it to be an old TM R7 CGB look. Upon further review, I think it’s just a rehash of the FT-IZ- especially the fairway wood design! The only difference I can see is the red “ribs” on each side of the soleplate (which is a copy of the Nike SuMo line). What a joke… no wonder Callaway is closing in on the bone yard.

I wonder if these will be out in stores before the end of the year? It took the new titleist drivers about 6 months to show up on tour.

Pretty… shiny… new… improved… longer… straighter. Hmmm… really? I doubt it. The comment about how the sole looks above is so spot on. Lets face it.. .if the sole of your driver hits the ground, where it would make a spit of difference… then you are in trouble!

The thing with the sole is, it looks like the old SuMo sole, which Nike dropped when they went to the DyMo (and left out for the Machspeed and Vr lines, as well). If Nike stopped thinking that sole design was a good idea, why does Callaway all of a sudden believe in it? Not even that, it shows no ingenuity on Callaway’s part- use someone else’s cast-off idea and change the color? This coming from a company that trumps up its innovations…

Callaway revolutionized the game of golf thats the only company which has world class innovation . they have made very good drivers ,irons putters. these new driver line up of Callaway has taken the market to drive and this new driver shape of Octane is awesome.

People like buying new and shiny. That along with the marketing blitz that puts our hopes up, they will sell whatever it is they come up with. It’s no wonder so many “new” models keep appearing, month after month. They usually sell.
Cars are the same, as are most consumer products.
Sometimes a very minor tweak in a golf club can improve the performance over a previous model that is noticable enough in the hands of many. Also, these equipment companies must stay current (in customers eyes) or get bowled over by the onslaught of their competitors.
Perhaps sadly, but that’s the world we live in.
Now go swing something new and shiny!

If that’s so true, why have the last two US Open winners gamed old drivers (Glover: SuMo 5000; McDowell: FT-3)?
Custom fititng is the only “breakthrough” technology. A properly fit club will do more for you than anything shiny bought off the rack.

I will drink to that. I have just purchased this Diablo Driver. In fact, I was not just in love with a new shiny thing… I like having to stare at the artwork on top versus staring at a dull white driver (though the Burner 2.0 feel awesome). In fact, I was fitted to this DIABLO driver while comparing it to my custom-built driver (that I can drive comfortably to 237 yards) and the PING G15. Frankly, I was amazed that I hit the G15 the worse out of the three. My Power Transfer Ratio was progressively better with the Diablo than with my personal driver. Meaning that I did less work with the Diablo than with my Driver and yet I drove it longer. So I bought the Diablo contingent on Playability Factor. I took it to the Range and I have picked 20 yards more than my driver (As was measured with my Bushnell V2 Rangefinder). The next day I was splitting 500+ yards fairways comfortably while scoring 50% Fairway Hits based on a 9-hole round. It’s a great driver…Good thing I enjoy my custom-built FW woods and I am on a tight budget; because, the Diablo matching Fairway Woods feel scrumptiously nice…

I know this sounds a bit grumpy for a site dedicated to new equipment……..but isn’t a lot of this stuff starting to look almost identical to the last lot!!!?????? I mean the difference between this and last years becomes MINUTE. At the end of the day getting a decent shaft seems more important to me anyway!
It is a nice looking club….but so are mots of the latest offerings. Im happy with my Cleveland Launcher 08….don t think there is anything that is SIGNIFICANTLY gonna be much better at the moment.

The USGA’s rules have boxed in the companies re: performance. They, in essence, all perform almost identically. Just choose one that looks good to you at address, and get enough loft. What difference does it make how the sole looks???????????

Very true. Don’t forget their all made in the same foundries, as well. That’s why a major OEMs best friend is their marketing department- how much can they sell their gimmicks.

You are absolutely correct. They ALL have the same COR and are within inches per second in ball speed. The USGA has drawn the line and a manufacturer would be idiotic not to be right up against it. The only difference is with center of gravity which helps if you want to work the ball. The only thing left to play with is shafts. Find a shaft that releases in time with your swing and you can stick anything on the end of it and hit it well.

Good luck with that… it’s hard to find a good name for a club- there’s so many OEMs, boutiques and tinkerers that claim the naming rights to their projects it’s almost impossible to find something that sticks (legally). Besides, I like the word Diablo (not the club, but the name).
That said, This looks like a Taylormade driver- the CGB Max, I believe. What was wrong with their “unique” geomoetry they had going on before? But it’ll STILL be the “longest, straightest” in all the galaxy… until next year.

What is the difference between the 2010 and 2011 Diablo Octane Tour? Is it only the shaft length? Also, the Callaway website talks about the lighter feel and the thing feels heavy to me… Comments?
