A Urethane-Covered Golf Ball Doesn’t Guarantee High Spin

If you want more spin around the greens, you’ve probably been told to play a urethane-covered golf ball. In our 2026 golf ball testing, presented by UNRL, urethane balls produced considerably more wedge spin than ionomer balls. They also held onto much more of that spin when moisture was introduced.

But the testing showed something else. We saw differences of more than 1,600 rpm between urethane models on a 35-yard wedge shot. On a full dry wedge, an ionomer-covered ball even finished with more spin than one of the urethane models.

Urethane matters. It just doesn’t guarantee how much spin you’ll get.

Urethane is still the better bet for spin

If short-game spin is important to you, urethane is still the place to start.

On the 35-yard wedge shot, the average urethane ball produced about 1,900 rpm more spin. On a full dry wedge, the difference was more than 3,200 rpm.

The gap became even larger once moisture was introduced.

There was a 1,674-rpm difference between urethane balls

The Bridgestone Tour B XS produced 5,948 rpm of spin. The Snell PR3 produced 4,274 rpm.

Both are urethane-covered golf balls. If you picked those two golf balls simply because both had urethane covers, you’d be missing a pretty significant difference in how they performed on a 35-yard wedge shot.

An ionomer ball even finished ahead of a urethane ball

The Vice Tour has an ionomer cover and produced 9,217 rpm on a full swing wedge shot. It was higher than the Snell PR3.

Water is where urethane really separated itself

To me, most of this data wasn’t overly surprising. It’s generally what I expected although the Vice Tour and TruFeel produced more spin than I would have guessed.

The part that stands out most is the difference between wet and dry spin and, specifically, how much spin each cover type retained. I think this is something a lot of average golfers overlook. Plenty of approach shots and pitches are played from the rough and even when it hasn’t rained, there can be moisture on the grass and golf ball from dew or damp conditions.

The average urethane ball retained about 90 percent of its dry full-wedge spin. The average ionomer ball retained only about 55 percent.

That’s a huge difference and one that’s much more likely to show up on the golf course than golfers may realize.

Some urethane balls handled moisture much better than others

While the overall urethane spin retention averages are high, there are still variations within the category. Something like the Tour B XS is essentially unaffected when the golf ball gets wet. In comparison, the TaylorMade Tour Response and Snell PR4 struggle to retain spin.

Looking at this objectively, you start to understand why some golf balls cost $40 a dozen and some are $55.

What should you look for when buying a golf ball?

If you want more spin around the green, start with urethane. The numbers strongly support that. But don’t stop there. The word “urethane” can help narrow your search. The performance of the individual golf ball should make the final decision.
