The Testing Opportunity

In early April, the MyGolfSpy Forum conducted its first OnCore Golf Ball Member Test, inviting 15 testers to try out the ELIXR, VERO X1 and the new VERO X2. Our selection process ensured that we had a diverse group of testers with varying swing speeds, handicaps, ages, abilities, strengths and weaknesses. This thorough testing allowed us to provide the best reviews and information for potential buyers to make informed decisions.

Each tester received three dozen of their chosen golf balls and had five weeks to test them during on-course rounds, practice sessions and launch monitor tests, gathering valuable data and insights.

Before we get into the review of the OnCore VERO X2 and insights from testers, let’s do a quick recap about the OnCOre VERO X2.

The VERO X2 is a new golf ball from OnCore that is suited for swing speeds of 110 mph and up. It’s a four-piece design with a cast urethane cover. It features OnCore’s “Perimeter Weighted Technology” and retails for $50 per dozen.

The Reviews and Insights

As with all our  reviews, we want our testers to be open and honest with their feedback to ensure you are best informed when making a purchasing decision.

Golf ball packaging is important for sales as well as shelf appeal and tester invee123 made this remark:

“I must admit that the yellow packaging left me with mixed feelings. While the text and marketing materials conveyed the ball’s impressive technology and performance-enhancing features, the brighter yellow colors and the fonts gave the impression that the ball was geared towards a senior audience with lower swing speeds and a need for lower compression numbers, similar to a marketing campaign from XXIO.”

Similar to invee123, tester GregGarner wasn’t too fond of the coloring:

“I’m docking 1 point for the garish yellow/gold, which has nothing to do with performance. They do make a claim about it being the ‘gold standard,’ but the coloring is closer to baby food than gold bars.”

In the end, packaging is what it is and it’s the golf ball itself that really matters. So how did the golf ball actually perform?

Let’s hear what our testers had to say.

OnCore VERO X2 Golf Ball Review

GregGarner had this high praise for OnCores perimeter weighting technology:

“Folks, we have a winner here. I can’t say it’s 100% for sure because of the X2, but I’m hitting A TON more fairways and gaining 0.41 shots/round on tee shots. As in 12% more fairways. That’s about 2 fairways/round. (And it’s longer?!) If you wanted me to make a call on the claim that the perimeter weighting caused it to fly straighter, this is the data you’re looking for.”

Tester 03trdblack broke down his final feelings into a simple pros and cons list that highlighted some important factors for the VERO X2.

Pros:

  • I shot my lowest round EVER with this ball
  • Firm feel
  • Flies very straight
  • VERY DURABLE

Cons:

  • Needs more iron spin and a lot more short game spin
  • Not as workable
  • Expensive for a DTC ball
  • Not the best in the wind”

While tester Bohnson said:

“My favorite part about the ball was the cover. I really like the short game feel of the ball. It is plenty long and all of the balls seemed to pass the sniff test.”

Tester Thin2win had some good advice for those who are Pro V1 Left Dash users:

If you are a current Pro V1 Left Dash player, this ball is absolutely a contender for you. If you play the Kirkland ball and you watch your drives soar vertically and suck back instead of bound forward, you should try this ball out.”

The reviewers were able to provide a lot of data and numbers for our readers and I would highly encourage you to read their reviews to see all the finer details in which these reviews highlighted.

The Final Verdict

We received mixed reviews from our higher swing speed testers who put the OnCore VERO X2 through rigorous testing.

The final reviews scored between 71 and 89 out of 100. While the OnCore VERO X2 earned a place in many golfers’ bags, it’s obviously not be the perfect fit for everyone.

This was highlighted well by Bohnson

“This ball is a solid ball in that B+ to A- range. Not going to get to the solid A range of the Titleist ProV1.”

Greggarner added:

“Could absolutely be my gamer if I weren’t actively looking for ways to discount it. The sound, feel, and flight of this ball are absolutely top-notch. Huge kudos to the OnCore team for a high-performing, high-compression offering that isn’t clicky or off-putting.”

The last word for this Forum Member Testing Review Recap goes to invee123 who may have summed up the whole test perfectly.

“The OnCore Vero X2 is in fact a golf ball. Even more importantly, it is a very good golf ball for people who swing the club fast and want the ball to go as fast and straight as possible. It is a great ball for people who want a Pro V1x competitor but don’t want to fork over $55 a dozen and deal with a HUGE golf brand for customer service needs. It is not the best ball for those who seek the best that shot shaping has to offer, or are searching for the absolute most consistent flight from their ball. There is a reason that Titleist holds the crown for the best golf ball”

I liked the Vero 1 after trying a couple balls a buddy gave me a couple years ago. When I saw the DTC price tag of the Vero 1 & Vero 2 balls, I thought twice about ordering. Ultra high-priced DTC balls should be reclassified as DTCW – Direct To Consumer’s Wallet.

I have played the Vero X1 last year and this year and found the ball to be very good, especially for the price I paid (3 dz for $80 as I took advantage of OnCore’s buy 2 get 1 free special). I am in the higher swing speed category (107-110) and struggle at times to keep my driver in the fairway. This ball does seem to fly a little straighter (not a miracle worker) then others I have played and has plenty of distance. I was satisfy with the spin around the greens and was going to try the new X2 but not at $50/dz. OnCore needs to lower the price on the X2 if they want more golfers playing them. I will either stick with the X1 for the value/performance or if I am up for paying around $50/dz I will go back to the Bridgestone Tour X.

      $50 is ridiculous!

$50/dzn for a DTC brand isn’t going to sway anyone to their ball, especially with Titleist only being a few bucks more. At $40/dzn, it would be a FAR more compelling argument. I like OnCore and will be testing the Elixr 2022 and possibly the X1. But the X2 won’t get more than their OnCore cult buyers, in my opinion. Not until they cut their prices.
