Must-Haves For Winter Golf

It’s official. Winter is here.

While the December solstice marks the beginning of longer days, a boon for golfers everywhere, it also kicks off the coldest, bleakest months for most of us. Regardless of the winter weather you’re facing, you’ll need some seasonal gear for when a rare window of forgiving weather rolls through.

You’ll definitely need a jacket, like the PGA Tour-worthy adidas Frostguard hoodie we reviewed. But beyond a versatile insulated coat, there are tons of accessories and apparel that will make winter golf not only possible but downright pleasant. This means winterized golf gloves, yes, and we’ve got recommendations for that. But there are a multitude of other options to get you through the worst of it. Who knows? Your handicap may even go down by spring.

Let us know what we missed in the comments. We’re always looking for new gear to add to our winter quiver.

Here are the best winter golf attire and accessories

Must-Have Winter Weather Tops

Freefly Gridback Fleece Jacket

Whether you’re looking for a fleece to pair with your COLD.RDY joggers on a balmy day or want something to layer under your winter jacket, this Gridback fleece from Freefly is the perfect pick. Its ultra-soft grid fleece traps warmth and keeps it close to the body while a bonded, stretch-weave shell keeps wind and precipitation at bay. You don’t always find warmth and weather protection in the same package so we say go for it.

32 Degrees Heavyweight Baselayer

Is there anything better than a base layer? Yes, a $7 fleece base layer. This layer from 32 Degrees comes in crew neck or mock neck and touts features you’d expect from much more expensive shirts. It’s anti-odor, anti-static, moisture-wicking and has four-way stretch, meaning you’ll never be thinking about your clothes in the middle of your downswing—you’ll just be thinking about landing the ball on the green.

32 Degrees Packable Jacket

Another ultra-affordable pick from 32 Degrees, the Packable jacket delivers exceptional warmth at just $25. Insulated with 580 fill power down, you’ll find this jacket plenty warm for chilly days on the range or long cold afternoons on the course. It packs down into a compact size and can withstand light rain.

Johnnie-O Gridlock

Kids need protection from the cold, too. An affordable, lightweight option for layering throughout the coldest months, the Gridlock Jr. from Johnnie-O is wrinkle-resistant and stretchy. This makes it a no-nonsense addition to your kid’s wardrobe, one you won’t feel bad about buying again when they suddenly get taller.

Must-Have Winter Bottoms

adidas COLD.RDY Jogger

We tested these on Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island and, yes, they definitely keep you warm on the golf course. If you’re a die-hard pants person, you may be reluctant to add joggers (or sweatpants of any kind) to your golf getup but these actually look darn good on a cold day. The cargo pockets come in clutch for holding extra winter bits while lined hand pockets and a rear pocket keep tees, ball markers and a scorecard handy.

686 x Malbon Merino-Lined Golf Pants

One of our favorite under-the-radar golf brands, Malbon is a prolific collaborator, linking up with some of the biggest brands in the biz. Their collab with the winter-wear experts at 686 resulted in some top-tier apparel for the coldest days on the course. The Merino-Lined golf pant is handsome enough for the conference room and will transition seamlessly to the course. The roomy fit allows for another warm layer if needed while small touches like a durable water-repellent finish and silicone shirt grip make all the difference when compared to other winter golf pants.

Our Favorite Winter Golf Accessories

Feetures Merion 10 Socks

Here’s a fact: If it’s cold outside, your feet will be even colder. Wool socks may be a standard for hikers, bikers and general boot-wearers but they’re also a wonderful addition to a golfer’s winter wardrobe. If you love to walk regardless of the weather or just need some extra protection when you’re speeding down the fairway in a golf cart, wool socks can keep your toes immensely warm.

FJ Wintersof Gloves

Double gloves isn’t exactly a look you want to sport year-round but in the winter it’s the most sensible option. Your hands are required to hold onto the club, after all. When it comes to winter gloves, look no further than FootJoy’s WinterSof gloves, a winter staple. They come in six sizes, meaning you’ll be able to dial in the perfect fit, while a long cuff and fleece backing keep out the cold. They utilize FootJoy’s water-resistant Sure-Grip Autosuede on the palm for a trustworthy grip and are windproof. Winter golf gloves are an absolute must!

Melin A-Game Infinite Thermal Hat

We love Melin hats at MyGolfSpy. A few months back, we tested a handful of their caps, each of which passed with flying colors. When it comes to keeping our heads warm all winter, we reach for the brand’s A-Game Infinite Thermal hat. The Dri-Blaze sweatband keeps sweat off your brow while the super-soft microfleece lining staves off the cold. The hat features four-way stretch for comfort and is water- and snow-resistant for when the weather really gets bad. It truly is one of the best winter golf hats.

adidas ZG23 Boot

Sometimes wool socks alone won’t cut it. Rough winter weather means you might need to step up your shoe game, too. The ZG23 boot from adidas is tailormade (pardon the pun) for rough weather. Just like everything adidas makes, these not only look good but are optimized for performance. They’re deceptively lightweight, waterproof and their data-backed traction pattern keeps your feet firmly planted on the wettest of fairways. Not to mention that they’re actually comfortable for walking a full round with no issues.

G-Tech Heated Hand Warmer

Looking to keep your hands extra warm? The G-Tech heated hand warmer is the solution. With battery life of over 12 hours, you can keep your fingers heated for 36 holes (or more). Don’t believe us? These hand warmers are used by the Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans and Ohio State Buckeyes, among others.

Have you tried the heated golf gloves from Arctic Reaction? They work great and have 3 settings. The lithium batteries are rechargeable.
