Top Three Most Forgiving Players Irons

Forgiving player’s irons. Is that really a thing?

“Forgiveness” in this case is measured by how consistent a player’s iron is at producing shot outcomes.

When calculating the forgiveness metric, things like carry distance (difference between longest and shortest), ball speed (difference between slowest and fastest), backspin (difference between highest and lowest) and dispersion all play into how forgiving an iron is.

Spoiler Alert: Titleist T-100, TaylorMade P-7MC and Mizuno JPX 923 Tour are the most forgiving player’s irons of 2024. Read on to see if one of these is right for your game.

Titleist T-100

Titleist T-100 iron Best player's irons 2024

Who Is It For?

You prioritize consistency: The best for forgiveness, even though it’s still a player’s iron.

Golfers who want more repeatable scores: If feel and workability appeal to you and so do consistent scores.

Who Is It Not For?

Players who need distance: The T-100 is the shortest player’s iron in the 2024 test.

Anyone who lacks accuracy: Finished middle of the pack for accuracy.

Why Buy

The Titleist T-100 is the most forgiving player’s iron of 2024 with a forgiveness score of 9.6 out of 10. The T-100’s results were very consistent for dispersion, carry distance delta, ball speed delta and backspin delta. In other words, all shots started to look the same—a good thing.

One of the testers said, “The iron became more appealing as the session went on.” Golf is no doubt more appealing when you repeatedly hit the same shot.

Another strong comment regarding consistency and distance control was, “It goes the number I expect it to.” Of course, that number won’t be all that long as the T-100 is the shortest iron in the test.

Score: 9.6

TaylorMade P-7MC

TaylorMade P7MC Iron

Who Is It For?

Golfers who benefit from consistency: A great combination of forgiveness and accuracy with this club.

Anyone who wants to maximize accuracy: If you want to fire at the pin, this is your club.

Who Is It Not For?

You are looking for more distance: Ranks towards the bottom for carry and total distance.

Golfers with higher handicaps: Even though it’s forgiving, it’s built for lower handicap players.

Why Buy

This is the best player’s iron of the 2024 test with a forgiveness score of 9.5 and an overall score of 9.2.

With player’s irons, distance is not the main goal. If you want distance, you can find it in other categories. However, for a player’s iron to truly stand out as the best, you need accuracy and that is where the TaylorMade P7MC is the strongest.

The pitching wedge and 7-iron were some of the strongest-performing irons in the entire test in terms of accuracy and forgiveness. Although the P-7MC is not the longest iron, giving up a few yards could mean a lot more precision on the course.

Most testers liked the thinner top line. Sound and feel were also consistently mentioned as two of the top benefits.

There is just not much difference between some of these top clubs. The standout aspect of the P-7MC was the fact that many testers said they would choose this club before even reviewing the performance data which showed it was, in fact, producing the best results.

Score: 9.5

Mizuno JPX 923 Tour

Mizuno JPX 923 Tour

Who Is It For?

Players wanting a blend of feel and control: Impressive feedback from testers when it comes to feel but still an iron you can control.

Good golfers who want to play consistent golf: Just missed the top spot for forgiveness in the test.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers who want maximum distance: Not a distance iron.

Anyone with a higher handicap: Even with the forgiveness they offer, testers described mishits as “punishing.”

Why Buy

The Mizuno JPX 923 Tour did well in the 2023 testing but couldn’t quite pull off the win in the 2024 test. It ranks well for forgiveness at 9.5/10 but lacks for distance (a common theme in these most forgiving player’s irons)

The Mizuno JPX 923 Tour is a true player’s iron. Mizuno made sure to create a compact design with clean lines and a look that will appeal to elite players. Testers liked the club’s look and feel but some called it punishing when they missed the center of the face. Of course, all players irons can be.

When we look at the data, from a consistency standpoint, the Mizuno JPX 923 Tour is one of the best you will find. If you aren’t overly concerned about distance and want to create straighter and more precise shots, the Mizuno JPX 923 Tour could be a good fit.

Score: 9.5

Where’s the Ping i230’s? I found them far superior to the Titleist range.

All three are excellent irons. I got fitted into the T150 by Titleist, the P770 by TaylorMade, and the MP 245 by Mizuno. These models were a better fit for me as an older golfer who could use a little help with distance. All offer decent shaft options but of the three Titleist charges the most for graphite shaft upgrades. Now, we just need MGS to finally publish the Most Wanted Players Distance irons!

I own and love my T 100’s. They are consistent and easy to launch. I don’t care that your club says 8 on the bottom and mine says 7. As I have aged my swing sped and of course distance is just not where it used to be but these clubs have a great look and feel. My 5 & 6 irons are T 150’s. They are stronger lofts but are still amazingly easy to get a nice ball flight. The 6 has been weakened 1* and the 7 strengthened 1* to fill the gap. The 5 merges nicely with my 4 hybrid so there are no holes in the bag at the long end and the 9 has the same gap to my 46* wedge as all the other irons.

How does the best “forgiveness” irons differ from the best “game improvement” irons? Thought it meant the same thing.

These are players irons. So they are rating the most forgiving players irons. Game improvement irons are just that: game improvement.

Players iron are typically reserved for elite ball strikers… single digit handicappers. Get fitted.

There is zero percent chance the mizuno is more forgiving than the blueprint s.

Blueprint S is NOT a player’s iron. It leans towards a mid-handicapper, being more of a bigger cavity back

The blueprint s was tested in the players category, along with the i230. Both had a lower forgiveness score than the top 5.

This is players irons only… aka irons reserved for usually single digit handicappers who have exceptional ball striking.

Since not a single one is recommended for distance, how much shorter are these from the others tested? Would help to see rankings on a chart like what’s been done with some of the other tests but not all unfortunately.

It’s hard to say whether a club is longer or shorter than another, when they use the number on the club and not the loft. Players irons are 2-4 degrees weaker per club vs a distance iron.

What about a distance players iron?
My handicap is 5-6 but I’m 63 and losing swing speed. I need a distance players iron. Been looking at Takomo, really like them.

Hi Micheal, I have tested and am playing the Takomo MB 301’s, I have KBS stiff light shafts in them and they are working great. I do have the loft 2 degrees stronger to match my miura’s but they perform very nicely for me.

Try the Titleist T-200’s. I have a set (4-PW) with the Aerotech I80 Regular Steelfiber shafts, I love them. I’m 71 years old and I’m hitting my 7 iron 151 yards carry based on my fitting data with Trackman.
