Most Wanted Blade Putter 2023: Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1

Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1

Bottom Line

Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1 takes home the best blade putter for 2023. One of its key attributes is the UST All-In multi-material putter shaft.

Pros

The best-performing putter across our testing pool from 20 feet. As well, it performs well from 10 and five feet.

Cons

From a performance standpoint, it is rock solid. However, there is a $50 difference between the standard steel version versus the UST All-In version.

One limitation is that it is only available in a plumber’s neck hosel type.

HB Soft Milled 1 Face

Who Is It For?

With a plumber’s neck hosel, the HB Soft Milled 1 is best suited for a slight-arc putting stroke or golfers who want a subtle amount of toe hang.

Tester Feedback

  • Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1 ranks high for feel, sound and looks.
  • For likelihood of purchase, HB Soft Milled 1 ranks third.

Best Blade Putters 2023 – Buying Considerations

Evnroll EV2 Black

Length

Typically, stock putters come in either 34- or 35-inch lengths. Length can affect distance and direction. Many golfers find they fit better into putters with shorter shafts. Choose a putter that allows for a relaxed setup based on your address posture.

Loft

The right loft promotes a smooth roll off the face. Too little or too much can cause bouncing, hopping and, ultimately, distance control issues. We recommend working with a professional fitter to determine the right loft for your putting stroke.

Best Blade Putter for Slight Arc

Best Blade Putter for Slight Arc

Cleveland HB Soft Milled 1 is the best blade putter for a slight arc stroke type.

Blade or Mallet?

Which is best for you? It’s a combination of personal preference and individual putting stroke. While there are few absolutes in fitting, those with a faster putting stroke often are better suited with lighter blade-putter options. If your stroke is slower and smooth, a heavier mallet might make more of an impact.

Toe Hang

As much as tempo is a factor in choosing the right putter, so too is the amount of arc in your stroke. If you open and close the face more than average, consider a heel-shafted putter with more weight in the toe. Balance the putter on your two index fingers. If the putter head hangs with the toe closer to 6 o’clock, it’s toe-balanced. A face-balanced putter will face the sky. Face-balanced putters are generally well suited for golfers with more of a straight-back, straight-through stroke.

Or, you can throw toe hang out the window with L.A.B. Golf. They specialize in fitting using lie angle balance. Their putters designs adhere to your appropriate lie angle and assist with returning the club face back to square – more consistently.

Best Blade Putter for Straight Back, Straight Through

Best Blade Putter for Straight Back, Straight Through

TaylorMade TP Hydro Blast Del Monte is available in two different hosel types - L Neck (Del Monte 1) & Single Bend (Del Monte 7).

It is our recommendation for those who favor more of a straight back, straight through putting stroke.

Putter Features

While not quite to the extent of drivers, putters have gone high-tech.

It’s not uncommon to find putters with adjustable weighting which, in addition to changing head weight, can alter toe hang to suit either a stronger or less arcing stroke. Odyssey, Toulon, PXG and Cleveland all feature multi-material putter shafts. LA GOLF and L.A.B. Golf offer composite shaft options. Evnroll and others offer face-milling patterns or inserts designed to not only promote smooth roll but consistent distance (and, in some cases, direction) on mishits.

Fast Versus Slow Greens

Best Value - Sub 70 Wide Blade 005

Best Value - Sub 70 Wide Blade 005

At $169.99, Sub 70 Wide Blade 005 is the best value blade putter for 2023.

There’s a case to be made for matching the weight of your putter to the speed of the greens you play most often. On slow greens, heavier putters tend to perform better. On fast greens, a delicate touch is needed. Often a lighter putter will produce better results.

During each test, we look for trends that provide insight about market direction as well as what noteworthy changes manufacturers have made to improve year-over-year performance.

Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2

We are taking a new approach to tester feedback. As always, it will not play a role in our overall rankings. However, subjective feedback from our testing pool allows us to provide more definitive answers regarding sound, feel, looks and likelihood of purchase. • Multi-material putter shafts are in vogue. With Odyssey continuing with their renowned Stroke Lab shafts, the likes of PXG and Cleveland are now following the same path. Not only that but the likes of L.A.B. Golf and LA GOLF are using composite shafts to propel their products. Of course, LA GOLF boasts their own shaft lineup. It’ll be interesting to see if more OEMs travel down this route going forward.

FAQ

Buying a Blade Putter

Q: Should I get fitted for a putter?

A: Without a doubt. Don’t just go to the putting corral at your local golf store and choose the putter that feels the best or the one you happen to make a couple of putts with. Do your research, know the facts and take your knowledge to your golf course or store with the intention of being fitted for the right putter for YOUR stroke. Your best chance of finding the best performing putter comes from getting fitted.

Q: How do I find the right length putter for me?

A: Take a comfortable putting stance with a putter. If the putter is too short, it likely it will sit too upright or the heel will be off the ground. If it’s too long, you’ll feel you’re crowding the ball and the toe will be pointing up slightly. Visit a fitter.

Q: What is the price range for a typical putter?

A: Name-brand putters range from $99 to more than $500. Higher-priced models are often 100-per-cent CNC milled but it’s also true that you could be paying a premium for the logo on the putter. Price may always be a factor but don’t assume the best putters are the most expensive.

Most Wanted

Q: How is the Most Wanted Winner determined?

A: Rankings for the Best Blade Putters 2023 are based on a 100-point scoring system. Putters are scored at five, 10 and 20 feet. The individual scores are then aggregated to arrive at the overall score. Scores are weighted such that the 10-foot score has the greatest influence on the cumulative score.

Q: How were the best putters for stroke type determined?

A: At the beginning of the test, each putter is classified by its toe hang/stroke type. The best within each designation are those that finished highest in overall score with respect to toe hang/stroke type.

Q: How much does subjective feedback like looks, sound and feel factor into your rankings?

A: ZERO. Our rankings are based purely on total putt counts and quantifiable performance metrics. We include subjective notes only because readers have asked for more feedback directly from the testers.

Q: Will you publish a mallet putter test?

A: Yes, those results will be published in the coming weeks.

I started reading about the Cleveland HB soft putters this past week, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the 1 at the top of the blade putter list. When I take the quiz on the Cleveland site it tells me the 4 and 11s are the ones for me. What is the main difference between the 1 and the 4 besides the 4 is a little heavier?

I have an old Cameron Pro Platinum Newport 2 that I flattened with my foot. I think your eyes need to be inside the blade. It was a good putter, but when I put an Evenroll Gravity grip on it, it became a great putter. BTW , I haven’t measured the lie, just set it to where my eyes saw the line with no optical illusion, useded to play with an ophthalmologist who clued me in. But it is closer to 61 than 71. I have done that with some cheap putters as well. All I can say is it works for me. 20 feet and in it is deadly.

Once again, the Snubbed brand beats out the Hyped brands.
Each and every year, i chuckle as i watch the drooling and nonsense comments on this stuff, knowing that the smart ones have already shosen either Wilson Staff or Cleveland for literally ALL their stuff.

Oh well, Let the wanabee hype show continue, while “Scotty” and all the rest of the gang laugh all the way to the bank..

Thank you Wilson Staff, Cleveland, Sub70 and others for PROVING what is best.

Well, I do not envy a putter shootout editor. I like most have a collection of putters from my first NOMAD then DANDY- TM ROSA – Bettinardi to now my longest in the bag 3 yrs….EDEL. The best thing I learned was to use 2 different grips after hours upon hours of testing lag putts vs delicate putts. I think sticking with one putter and learning HOW to putt like the pro’s practicing using tees and mirrors etc helps….a new club is enticing but resist….if you start trying new putters, you are probably going to buy one….that’s why I don’t test drive cars till I know I am going to buy., hard to resist.

Honestly, the price of putters nowadays is ridiculous. And don’t get suckered by the “you hit more shots with the putter than any other club” BS sales pitch. It makes no difference, statistically, what you use, on the green.
Look at how many putts some players were able to make with their wedge when they threw away or broke their putter mid round. And same goes for the hybrid or whatever low-lofted club a player decided to use.
Sure it’s your money – but you’re just wasting it on a new putter with all the tech mumbo jumbo when there are players who are still using their 25 year old putter and they do just fine, no matter how fast or slow the greens are.
And that’s the problem with these reviews – they’re too biased, because it’s not stats-based on actual real, hard competition round testing. I know that sounds weird, but it has to work in such situations and how many people abandon their putter after an especially difficult round, even though in these initial tests, it looked and felt good.
I’m not buying. A new putter. I’m going to continue to use my 12 year old one until it breaks or loses the grooves on the face completely.

I hit about 32 putts per round. The three most important clubs in your bag is your putter, wedge and driver. If you want to at least break 80, putting is the great equalizer. I know I can’t but what the pros play but the really good putters are expensive. I play about 100 rounds a season. My putter was fitted and it’s definitely worth the time and money. If fitting saves a few strokes a round, who’d be foolish enough to buy off the rack?

It’s pretty clear from the comments that many are dissatisfied with these putter tests. Clearly the results are from a select group of people. Not sure that’s me though. Without testing a dizen putters in real life conditions, (playing, not practising, and certainly not on the carpet in the big box store) how would a person know what’s best for them?
Let’s see what MGS does best, technical testing using a putting machine, heel toe hits, high low on the face, and straight through, small, medium and large arc. All from the 3 distances.
And wouldn’t the best putter be the one from 5 feet? Most often we are two putting, so if you don’t do a great job from 20+ feet,(for a variety of reasons, it would seem to me you’d want the “best” putter from 5 feet for your second putt.
Without the data from the published test, we have no idea what the difference is between one putter and another, could be insignificant.

Interesting that the COBRA KING 3D Printed Grandsport 35 won the 2022 Most Wanted Blade putter with a score of 92.1 but this year got a score of 87.1. Even more interesting that it was 10 points worse in the 10ft category (98 last year vs 88 this year)! It doesn’t seem like the test protocol changed at all, so clearly there will be some variation in the results even with the huge sample of putts hit by testers.

I would be curious to see test data from a lab setting on each putter (ball speed or launch differences depending on impact location, for example) and whether that data agrees with the human testing. It would be great to see some discussion from the MYGOLFSPY team about WHY the most wanted putters outperformed the field.

That is because they don’t use data for these tests. There isn’y any data that they have shown in this article proving their findings. It is just results from their uses. If it was a real test they would show the results from the testers using data from a putting simulator like Quintic.

Great job as always MGS! Would love to know if there is any further analysis on the 20ft out. Why did the Clevland test so much better than the others in that category? That is pretty impressive…. you all must have at least a hunch as to why it scored so much better?

Interesting that last time it was tested from 5 feet in 2021, the Special Select Newport went from negative strokes gained (bottom 5 in the category) to being the best from 5 feet in this year’s testing.

Special Select Newport 2 was not tested in 2021. Special Select Newport and Newport 2.5 were tested in 2021.

Apologies. It was 2020 where the Newport 2 was tested and had negative strokes gained.

Is there any way to quantify the difference between first, second and last place for the 20′ range? (shots made, ave miss distances…)
All the other distances seem in line with what you could expect a putter to perform at. Then you move to 20′ and on putter outshines everything else by 20 point, while other top performers turn to absolute trash. How could the LA golf go from 92 pnts, 85 pnts then sin to 35 pnts at 20′ (similar to the Ping)
Could this be an issue with the test or are they just that bad?

You mentioned the difference between first and second in the 5′ range was 6 putts. that was only 1 pnt on the rating scale. first to last on the 20′ is 74 pnts. (did it win by 444 strokes?)

The number listed for the Cleveland at 20′ differs on the chart and the top of the page,

OK. Simple dumb question. Now that I am retired (YAAAA!!!) I am playing more golf. How do you determine if you need a new putter? I have two putters I switch between. One is close to 30 years old (blade, “Pal Joey PJ-14”) and one is 20+ years old (mallet, Odyssey – White Hot XG – Hawk). What is a better option. 1) Schedule a fitting and take my current putters with me to compare and find what’s best, or 2) Pick one and pay for putting lessons?

Thank you for another great test.

With all the new putters that come out each year (with several from a single brand), how do you determine which ones to test? Do the manufacturers provide a single one? Do you just pick a popular one from a line (if there are several)?

A small request (that’s come up before)…since your testing evolves year over year…like with the driver test, can you please include last year’s winner in this year’s test for comparison purposes? (Please disregard if I missed it.)

      Thanks again.

This is an incredible body of work and I know you can’t choose every putter. That said, since your winning putter was a Cleveland I think it would be interesting if you do a comparison against the XXIO Blade in the link I’ve included. I forgot my putter at home and bought this on a whim at a local golf course I was going to play and it’s stayed in the bag ever since. It didn’t “feel” perfect at first but there’s something about the weight of this putter and the insert that helped me dial in my putting like no other putter I’ve used. It doesn’t matter what speed greens I’m on…it seems to help me dial in the distance control quickly.

Of course putters are all personal preference and what works for your game. But the Scotty’s being ranked so poorly……..??? I have some playing partners to razz about that. I personally think Scotty Camerons are like the plain white tee-shirts Kanye West came out with several years ago that sold for over $100.

A year or so I purchased a Mizuno Mark 2 blade putter. I liked that it came with 3 different weight sets
5g 8g & 13g. I took my Bettinardi mallet out of my bag and it was best move I made for my game.
Mizuno should get more love in the US golf market as it does in Japan and Europe

Mizuno does a great job of offering those additional weights with the purchase of their putters. They didn’t have any new offerings, however, they’ve traditionally done well in testing.

Would have hoped to see the LAB score higher but I’m not surprised. It took me a week or so to stop manipulating the putter like a conventional model and to get used to the tech.

Personally, I love what LAB has to offer. For most, it is unconventional, but it is making waves here and there.

What is the highest lie angle of these putters? I am looking for a putter close to the 80° limit, while using a Stricker arm lock. Most all are around 70°.

Hey Brett, since we test from an “off the rack” standpoint, we request putters that are standard loft, life, and 34″ in length. Most of these hover in the 70° range.

Custom L.A.B. armlocks offer lie angles of 78°, 79° or 79.5°

Being fit for a putter won’t harm golfers as well. Having the appropriate loft, length, and lie can assist with consistency to hit a precise spot at three feet.

Putting is feel. Find a putter that feels great, you can control speed and hit a precise spot at three feet. That’s your putter. Not sure what all these tests tell me. Everyone is a bit different. Other advice a putting lesson will help out more than a new putter in my opinion.
