BEST SPIKED GOLF SHOES OF 2021

Are you looking for the most stable golf shoe? The most comfortable? Most waterproof? Or are you all about looking good on the course? Whatever your preference, our Best Spiked Golf Shoes Buyer’s Guide will answer all your questions.

Studies by multiple companies indicate getting the right size and style of golf shoe can help you gain swing speed. Consider FootJoy’s study and take note so you don’t miss out on that potential extra yardage.

If the kicks in our top five don’t suit you, our research can certainly help you determine your priorities.

WINNER – Under Armour HOVR Drive

When it comes to overall performance, the Under Armour HOVR Drive put on quite a show. This spiked shoe was consistent across multiple key metrics, making it the undisputed winner of the 2021 Most Wanted Spiked Shoe Test. See the results table below, but this is how the HOVR Drive performed in each category.

  • 2nd in stability
  • 6th in comfort
  • 5th in elements
  • 2nd in style
  • 5th in traction
MOST COMFORTABLE SHOE - Footjoy HyperFelx BOA

MOST COMFORTABLE SHOE - Footjoy HyperFelx BOA

The Footjoy HyperFlex BOA golf shoe is the most comfortable shoe in the test. Its sock like fitting, paired with the BOA tightening system truly allows the shoe to mold to you foot. With its textile upper you think it wouldn't be good in wet conditions. The HyperFlex BOA has a 2 year waterproof guarantee to put your mind at ease.

EXPERT TIP - Sizes From Country To Country

Most companies have sizes that are compatible with one another from country to country. However, some companies like adidas have only a half size difference from UK to US. Be diligent and read the conversion label to get the right size. You can double check, here.

Other Notable Performers

Asics Gel-Course Duo BOA – The Duo Boa is a comfortable shoe with an easy lace system thanks to the BOA technology for that perfect custom fit. For those who are after maximum support in the heel, the Duo BOA is defiantly one to consider as it really locks in your ankle. It should also be noted that their FlyFoam acts as a shock absorber for each step to save your back from any long term injury.

Footjoy Premiere Packard Series – The Packard Series provides a classic look that golfers desire but with a modern twist. The shoes leather molds to your foot ones broken in allowing for more comfort when walking. With its raised heel, the Packard pitches you forward helping those golfers who always get stuck on their heels.

The Best Spiked Shoes 2021 – Features That Matter

Comfort

Comfort should be the top priority no matter which shoe you’re considering. It’s important to understand that comfort starts with proper sizing. If you’re not wearing the correct size, you’re sacrificing comfort and performance.

If you’re looking for the most comfortable shoe, try the HyperFlex Boa by FootJoy. Other shoes notable for comfort are the New Balance Striker 2.0 and the Skechers GO GOLF Torque Pro.

Traction

Seldom is a quality golf shot preceded by a slip. Not all spiked shoe soles are created equal. Some designs provide significantly better traction than others. If you play in wet conditions often, this should be integral to your shoe decision.

If all-weather traction is your main concern, try the PUMA Pro ADAPT Delta or the FootJoy Premiere Packard Series.

DIY Spikes

Did you know that you can turn any regular shoe into a golf shoe? GolfKicks spikes screw into any shoe, allowing you to merge your everyday style with traction on the course.

Stability

You don’t want your foot vulnerable to slippage and spillover but you still want some freedom of movement. A perfectly stable shoe should consist of a molded heel cup along with structured mid-sole support. Weight distribution is also important during your swing. The right amount of foot freedom (lateral movement) is necessary to achieve correct weight distribution.

Golfers seeking the ultimate in stability should consider the PUMA Pro ADAPT Delta and Under Armour HOVR Drive.

MOST STABLE SHOE - PUMA Pro ADAPT Delta

MOST STABLE SHOE - PUMA Pro ADAPT Delta

The PUMA Pro ADAPT Delta shoe is awarded the most stable shoe of 2021. Its compact design ensures your foot is locked in from the moment you slip them on. The ADAPT Delta also has a wide sole base making sure you don't spin out of your shot or get stuck on one side when transferring weight during the swing.

Expert Tips

  • Not everyone needs the most stable golf shoe on the market. Try on different shoe designs to determine what level of stability works best for you.
  • If you require more stability, look for designs with some form of wrap technology in the mid-foot section to help keep your feet anchored.
  • If something doesn’t feel quite right in an otherwise comfortable shoe, it may be worth trying the BOA/DISC alternative if offered. These closure systems often increase the cost of the shoe.
  • While style preferences will vary among golfers, comfort is an absolute. Don’t sacrifice it for any reason.
  • Have your foot measured to ensure you’re buying the proper size.

Best Spiked Golf Shoes of 2021 – FAQ

Q: How much should I spend on a shoe?

A: It’s possible to find well-designed, fully featured golf shoes for around $105. That said, the majority of top performers, including our choice for Best Stability, are closer to $200. As with anything else, your frequency of play should factor in the decision. Golfers who play just a few times a year may be able to find a suitable offering for less. Just don’t skimp on comfort to save a buck.

Q: Do I need to buy golf shoes? Can I play golf in regular shoes?

A: You can. But the correct footwear will contribute to your game. If you’re not playing for score, you can transform any shoe into a spiked golf shoe with screw-in spikes called GolfKicks. Discuss among yourselves.

Q: Is BOA/DISC technology better than laces?

A: Some golfers prefer these modern closure systems to traditional laces but it’s certainly not a universal preference. Users of BOA and DISC report a tendency for their shoes to loosen during a round and while it’s not a big deal to re-tighten, it can be an annoyance. Also consider that if a shoelace breaks, it’s easily replaceable whereas warranty replacements for other closure systems can take time.

What is the elements test? Is is just a subject review of the shoe or is some objective test actually run? The same goes for the other categories – how is the traction test done and so on?

None of these shoes have any style. They are cheaply made , and are boring. The only shoes right now that are showing uniqueness , style, colors, etc.. is G-Fore.

I enjoy seeing your ratings of the various products that we, as golfers, may find important. One thing that isn’t clear in your evaluations, is whether the various traits bein evaluated are weighted or considered equally. For example, in the case of shoes, you list 5 criteria for scoring and I would argue that traction and comfort are far more important than style. Could you let us know how those rankings are considered?

I recently noticed that Tiger and a few other Pros were using soft cleats with a spike in the center and researched them and found some for my Ecco shoes. The one knock I had on the Ecco shoes was they didn’t grip as well as my Adidas 360s. The spiked cleats made a world of difference. I am scoring much better on wet days. I have much better balance on side hill lies and any sloped lie. My improved stablity has improved my shot accuracy too.

Would love to see how these ratings change if Style, which is totally subjective, is removed. Can’t take any shoe ratings seriously with that as a ratings component. That’s a big factor in the Golf Digest ratings.

Would you consider sharing how you assign points for your ratings? Some of us who have been professionals in quantitative analysis have experience with multi-attribute decision theory and understand that methodology can have a profound influence on conclusions. Looking at your overall point totals and relative scoring of parameters makes it appear that there are not any appreciable or meaningful differences among the shoes. (Especially when you include highly subjective parameters such as style.) Yeah, I like hearing what you say about the alternatives, but ultimately what matters for me is whether the shoe is comfortable and whether it will keep me dry in wet conditions.

It is so disappointing that there are very few options for spiked shoes for women. Go to the online internet golf stores and search for spiked golf shoes….you’ll get 5 or 6 shoes, with two being footjoy in an all white or ugly saddle. As a single digit hcp I want and need spiked golf shoes. I use a custom insole so typically I have to get a women’s golf shoe in a wide. That leaves me with a Footjoy. I have given up on a women’s spiked shoe search and having a feminine looking shoe . This past year I ordered a half dozen men’s 7 spiked golf shoes. Only ones that fit are Adidas in both length and width. Love BOA lace system…..not in love with the look of Adidas newest spiked BOA shoe. Thanks for the golf shoe review.

Thank you for the women’s spiked shoe review. . It came out after I commented on the men’s spiked shoe review. I tried to find one of the spiked shoes on the women’s spiked shoe review list and even the mfg website did not list it as an option. To my original comment the women’s spiked shoe review you have 8 shoes versus 20 for the men. One of the 8 I can’t locate, 3 are from adidas. You can buy those 8 spiked women’s shoes pretty much in white with the exception of the Nike. Lots of women’s golf spikeless golf shoes on the market….very few spiked options. Thanks again….I have read your website every morning for the past 4 years or so.

I’m an Adidas fan but I’ve been disappointed in their offerings the last few years. The code chaos replaced the Adipower line and didn’t come in a spiked version. If you want a spiked shoe you either choose between the cheap ones or the top of the line model. Their only 2 shoes in this test were some ugly boa and some ugly cheap ones. Bring back the midrange spiked shoes with boost.

I prefer Ecco and buy them directly from them when they close out models thru an email I receive. A $200 pair will run $80 or less and they are terrific. I also like Sketchers, however, the memory cushion can get uncomfortable after 4 hours, especially if the weather is warm.

After tossing the expensive FJ shoes which spikes would not stay secured, I purchased a pair of the Under Armour HOVR shoes a few months ago.
Over the past few years I’ve worn Adidas which I really like … particularly the spikeless shoe … the Nike were good, liked the extra width but not particularly durable. Of all of my dozen or so pairs of golf ‘boots’, the UA are head and shoulders above the rest … and the FJ’s for me are the most expensive overrated torturous shoes that I have ever owned … not surprised that they don’t rate.

I had the same problems with Footjoy when they switched over from the ‘fast twist’ to the ‘pins’ style. I ended up having to use epoxy to keep them in, but they still eventually broke loose too.

Adidas golf shoes are “wider” than normal? I have owned Adidas golf shoes and never had that issue. My feet are average width to a bit narrow. So, Adidas has changed their manufacturing and now shoes are designed wider than in the past. I prefer Adidas shoes so,, even though warned, I may try the SG21.. Thanks for the review. It has been very timely for me.

Nice review, but who needs golf shoes with spikes that need replacing anymore? The Footjoy Pro SL has no spikes, won’t slip even in wet weather, are stable, comfortable and actually look like golf shoes. Have worn them for years and the 2020 was the best version yet. BTW, the ones that are 3 versions old still look great.

I bought a pair of the FJ Pro SL, my first pair of spikeless. While they weren’t bad, after I started wearing the New Balance spiked shoes, I definitely noticed better traction and grip, especially in wet conditions. To each his own.

The FJ Pro SL (Super Light) is the most comfortable spikeless golf shoe I’ve ever worn and I’ve had them all. I find them stable, even though it literally feels like I’m wearing house shoes. Never before have I had a golf shoe where my feet feel better after the round than before it. The traction is also far superior to other spikeless shoes.

I have very wide feet and bunions and the New Balance Striker shoe is great. First pair in Black/red was $99. They were comfortable right out of the box and I find them to be very stable. Then saw an ad for last year’s color (Black with green highlights) for $49. Back-up pair!. I find I can’t wear Adidas due to narrow width. If you have wide feet, try the NB Striker, they come in 4E.

Having 4E ( I can walk on water with my boats) and custom ORTHOTICS, I need to know I can remove the inside footbed and fit my own – don’t see any mention of whether you can easily do this. Guess that’s why I go to the store and don’t buy online.

Wide Eccos have a liner that can be removed for a wider fit. I use spiked New Balance 4E width. I also have some spikeless Wide Eccos and with the liner removed they fit fine.. The ones I have are spikeless and quit having traction for golf quite a while ago so I wear them as street shoes.

Nice to see a solid budget option in the Adidas Tech Response 2.0. I’ve got some Tour 360 Boost 2.0’s, but they offer absolutely zero ventilation which did not work well for my first summer in Texas. I may just have to grab a pair in each color.

I agree! I’m in Australia and it’s hotter than hell in summer and there’s so little choice in highly breathable, comfortable, stylish spiked golf shoes. The Tech Response don’t look amazing but they’re practical so I might have to get them…

      Had foot joy BOA since they came out never had a lace break; Yes, every once in awhile ‘you’ give them a crank to re-tighten to your comfort level, it takes about 5 whole seconds! ;

I hate all the designs except the Nike zoom victory, i own a pair and i feel like you have yo use them a couple of rounds to break them fiesta before they feel comfortable
After then they have been awesome

This might belong in the category of “Beggars cannot be choosers” but it would be great if you published dates in advance for your upcoming test releases. I just bought shoes last week and would have waited. Luckily the ZG21’s I bought did well.

Nice work Fellas! Keep up the great work! I just bought some Pro SL Carbon and the Adidas Codechaos Port. Both are incredibly comfortable. Can’t wait to see the spineless test.

Interesting results, especially since the winning Under Armor shoe doesn’t have Spieth as part of its branding. One thing very important that was not mentioned in your analysis is that different companies use different shoe lasts. The lasts are the foundation of building a shoe, and as such affects comfort, stability, etc. It is equally important finding a brand using the last that most closely matches your foot,s characteristics. Someone with a wide footbed but narrow heal will need a shoe very different than someone with “Fred Flintsone feet.”

As someone with a wide foot, these types of surveys have always been useless since well over half of the options don’t come in wide widths which should be table stakes. Nothing like being teased” with “most wanted” or “best” only to find it comes from brands that only fit a certain percentage of the population.

I purchased the Squairz just for this reason. They are standard much wider than any shoe I have owned and the squair toe provides even more room. Great golf shoe. I can’t believe it scored this low.

I hate that golf shoes are all becoming sneakers. Did Adidas do away with the tour360 xt shoes? They were great and I can’t find any. Guess I will have to give the Premiere shoes from Foot Joy a shot.

What! You mean you don’t like what the new style gurus are pushing, that you can wear (usually spikeless) golfer shoes on the course, keep them on and then go out to dinner and hang out with your friends? Me neither. I own more than one pair of shoes! And if I showed up right from the golf course with my golf shoes on for a date night with my wife, that would probably be an instant cancellation on her part!

      Hi MGS,
Thanks for all your reports and tests! I enjoy reading them. With this particular test, could you re-run the numbers minus the “style” category? My 10/10 would be my son’s 3/10 and vice-versa, plus I can’t imagine that it impacts performance, if you’re looking at your feet when you swing, I’d think the style of the shoes you see would be the last of your concerns! Rating should be on what impacts performance only, that’s what you folks do best!

      Thanks

I have a very narrow foot and Nike are my go-to golf shoes. They can take a little breaking in but a couple of rounds and you’re good to go. The Air Max 270 is most narrow of the pairs I own

I have a medium foot and Nike golf shoes tend to run pretty narrow on me. I have a pair of the Zoom Infinity Tours and I would say they fit more like a narrow than a medium.

To me, this looks like a VERY Americanized “research”, taste/style is definitely not part of this evaluation and most of those shoes won’t last a day in wet conditions..

The technology today has come a long way from previous years. You can now find shoes with a mesh like material and still be waterproof. Yes it might discolor in muddy conditions but just water, some perform really well.

I went to buy shoes recently and noticed that the mesh style is taking over. I’m guessing they are waterproof but won’t they look like crap after getting wet a few times? My rule for golf shoes is the most comfortable, functional ones not costing me an arm and a leg. Luckily, I’ve been able to find that combination over the past 10 years or so a number of times. And I couldn’t give a damn about style; style never dropped apart for me
