Top 4 Longest Irons of 2024

Our 2024 golf iron testing is complete. We’ve looked at the best super game-improvement, game-improvement, player’s distance and player’s irons of 2024. If distance is your top concern when shopping for an iron, you are in the right spot. These are the top four longest irons of 2024.

We determine the best irons for distance by looking at carry distance and total yards.

Longest super game-improvement irons: PING G730

Best super game-improvement iron for distance

Who Is It For?

Golfers who care about extra yards: It’s hard to turn away an iron that is 7.84 yards longer than the shortest iron in the test.

Players who like a loud click at impact. Several testers noticed the click-like sound and hot face of the PING G730 irons.

Who Is It Not For?

Anyone who needs accuracy: The PING G730 is below average for accuracy, which should be a top priority when purchasing super game-improvement irons.

❌ Golfers looking for extra forgiveness: PING G730 is below average in forgiveness and the consistency of shot outcomes.

Why Buy

The PING G730 is the longest super game-improvement iron of 2024. It is nearly eight yards longer than the shortest iron in the test, the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal HL.

Testers commented, “Hot face and great distance” and “Hit is great. It is ridiculously hot.” “PING nailed the distance thing with this iron.”

That doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Our testers struggled with the click-like noise the club made when the ball left the clubface.

In addition, the PING G730 finished below average for accuracy and forgiveness. If distance is the most important feature for you, consider getting a fitting to see if you can dial in the accuracy a bit before purchasing.

Score: 9

Longest game-improvement irons: Wilson Dynapower

Wilson Dynapower Iron Review

Who Is It For?

Players who need extra yards. The Dynapower offers pure distance, more than 10 yards longer than the shortest iron in the test.

Anyone looking for a deal. Priced at $699, the Dynapower is one of the more affordable options in the 2024 test.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers who need consistency: The golf shots are long but the Wilson Dynapower isn’t great about producing consistent shot outcomes.

Players who are particular about clubhead design: Testers noted the Wilson Dynapower wasn’t the best-looking iron in the test.

Why Buy

The Wilson Dynapower is the longest game-improvement iron of 2024. Many golfers purchasing game-improvement irons want distance so it’s hard to ignore its power when making a purchase decision.

However, based on Dynapower’s overall results and tester feedback, it’s important not to purchase solely based on distance. The Wilson Dynapower had some of the lowest forgiveness and accuracy rankings in the entire test.

For an average 7-iron shot, you’ll get about 10 more yards with the Wilson than with the shortest iron in the test (MacGregor MACSPD) but it may cost you some strokes.

Score: 9.7

Longest player’s distance irons: COBRA KING Forged Tec X

COBRA KING Forged Tec X Iron review

Who Is It For?

Golfers who want a true player’s distance iron. Everyone loves distance but the COBRA KING Forged Tec X is all about combining distance with playability and accuracy.

Players who value accuracy. The COBRA KING Forged Tec X offered a positive Strokes Gained performance.

Who Is It Not For?

Anyone worried about forgiveness: Lacks forgiveness compared to the competition.

Golfers who like a softer feel off the face: Several testers described the COBRA KING Forged Tec X as being hot off the face.

Why Buy

The COBRA KING Forged Tec X is not only the longest player’s distance of 2024 but also the runner-up overall for the best player’s distance iron of 2024. The COBRA KING had impressive results in both distance and accuracy.

One tester described the COBRA KING as “subjectively appealing and insanely hot.” We rarely see an iron perform so well for distance and rank from an accuracy standpoint. Generally speaking, the more distance a golf iron gets, the less accurate it is.

Go for a fitting for the COBRA KING Forged Tec so that you can make sure you get your loft gapping correct. You’ll likely see numbers you haven’t seen before.

Score: 9.7

Longest player’s irons: Callaway Apex Pro

Callaway Apex Pro iron

Who Is It For?

Players who want pure distance. The Callaway Apex Pro was the longest 5-iron for 60 percent of the testing pool.

Golfers looking for a bit of a mix between players and player’s distance. Player’s irons aren’t necessarily known for distance. The Apex Pro flirts with being a player’s distance iron.

Who Is It Not For?

Golfers who struggle with accuracy: Accuracy is lacking with the Apex Pro.

Golfers who don’t like offset: More offset than other player’s irons in the test.

Why Buy

Most golfers who switch to player’s irons aren’t necessarily looking for extra distance. However, if you are one of those golfers making the switch and worried about losing distance, the Callaway Apex Pro is likely your best choice.

The Callaway Apex Pro is the longest of the player’s irons. Our testing results showed that golfers in the 3-8 handicap range should consider it. The consistency and overall distance of the Apex Pro helped raise the overall score, but accuracy is lacking enough that it could lead to issues with hitting greens.

Score: 9.3

What is the swing speed used for these tests. All constant is assume adjusted for shaft length.

I knew that it would be Ping when I read the email. They must be paying you guys a lot of money for their stuff to come in first place. I know a pro golfer that lives very close to me that is using nine year old ping irons because he hates all their new stuff. Yea delete this one so no one sees it!!!

Presumably he also hates everyone else’s new stuff too or he’d play that.

I am interested in how you tested…7 iron to 7 iron….or degree of the club to the same degree of a different brand…maybe 7 iron in one brand is a 8 or 6 iron in another brand. Lastly, adding the Mizuno High Loft (HL) to this test group is silly. The purpose of the HL clubs were to give players high trajectory allowing then to hold the green but giving up distance by weakening the lofts(degrees of the clubs). By adding these clubs to the test, it skews the numbers to be bigger than they are from the best to worst.

Keep tests apples to apples, that’s what I like best about most of your tests.

Exactly! Loft jacking has rendered the number on the iron irrelevant—it’s the loft that matters. I’m a Ping guy for the most part, but sadly even they are joining in.

Ping G730 7I loft = 28*, Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal HL 7I = 31*. That’s ~ 9 yd distance difference. Or, get the Ping in 26.5* Power Spec Loft and tout an incredible ~ 13 yd increase in 7I distance …

This is exactly what I was wondering. I know it’s difficult to perfectly match loft vs loft (and shaft length in some cases), but it IS important when claiming that 1 is 7-10 yards longer.

Tried the G730s. Could not hit them worth a lick. Felt like the sole was too much for my swing and it was chunk city.

I find it hard to believe the cobra darkspeed aren’t the longest game improvement irons without question. I’m about a 2 handicap and swing a 7i at 100-102 mph, I tested these in a Sim just for fun and was carrying the 7i 225 at sea level.
