Head to Head: Longest Versus Shortest Player’s Distance Irons

We put a major focus on accuracy in our iron testing this year. Accuracy saves strokes on the course. However, if you are in the market for player’s distance irons, chances are you care a bit about distance. In this Head2Head, we’ll compare the COBRA KING Forged Tec X (the longest) with the MacGregor MT-Milled (the shortest).

Distance

The COBRA KING Forged Tec X is the longest player’s distance iron of 2024. When we test distance, we look at both carry distance and total distance results. We tested the pitching wedge, 7-iron and 5-iron, so distance was measured throughout the set.

The COBRA KING Forged Tec X was long throughout the entire set, easily earning first place and scoring 9.7/10.

The MacGregor MT-Milled finished last.

When it comes to the difference in distance, a COBRA KING Forged Tec X 7-iron had a carry distance of 177.9 yards and a total average distance of 183.2 yards. The MacGregor MT-MIlled had 166.2 yards of carry and 172.8 yards total with the 7-iron.

The COBRA KING Forged Tec X is more than 10 yards longer.

Accuracy

Here’s where this iron comparison gets fun. Typically, the more distance an iron gets, the less accurate it is. We’ve seen results throughout all iron categories in 2024, where the longest irons were some of the least accurate in the entire test.

As hot off the face as testers found the COBRA KING Forged Tec X to be, we were quite surprised when it earned a second-place finish for accuracy.

Accuracy is calculated according to Strokes Gained so the COBRA KING Forged Tec X is long and can help you lower your scores at the same time.

The MacGregor MT-Milled earned a fifth-place finish for accuracy. In a test of 18 irons, that isn’t bad. However, to make up for its lack of distance, we had high hopes for it to be a little more accurate but it just wasn’t.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness is how consistent an iron is in producing similar shot outcomes. For instance, if the COBRA KING Forged Tec X gives you a perfectly straight shot seven yards longer than your current irons, can you repeat it?

Unfortunately, forgiveness was one of the worst features of the COBRA KING Forged Tec X. You won’t find nearly as much consistency with this iron as you do with the MacGregor.

The MacGregor MT-Milled finished with an overall forgiveness ranking of fifth, the COBRA finished 15th. For an accurate and consistent iron, MacGregor is a good choice.

Value

The COBRA KING Forged Tec X finished second overall in the 2024 Best Player’s Distance Irons test and the seven-piece set retails for $999. The MacGregor MT-Milled starts at $549 for a six-piece set.

The MacGregor MT-Milled is undoubtedly cheaper but it finished 11th overall.

Bottom line

What’s the most important takeaway from this head-to-head? The COBRA KING Forged Tec X is a pretty impressive golf iron, given its accuracy and distance numbers.

Although it’s not the most consistent of the players’ distance irons, if you go for a fitting, you may be able to work around that and get these fine-tuned to work for your golf game.

I just want to know why we need to add the “distance” in players irons. Who started this nonsense and why???

These results are a perfect example of how the club manufacturers have been deceiving their customers for decades. It is a classic example of what the club designer Tom Wishon calls loft creep. Many club companies have been changing the lofts of their irons so they are stronger than more traditional clubs. These Cobra irons finished first because their lofts are some of the strongest and the MacGregors finished last because there’s are closer to the traditional lofts. The Cobra’s stamped their 27 degree iron with a 7 while MacGregor stamped their 31 degree iron with a 7. So with a 4 degree stronger loft the Cobra will go farther than the MacGregor, by about 10 to 12 yards. This way Cobra can say their 7 iron goes as far as MacGregor’s 6 iron. (Yes MacGregor’s 6 iron is 27 degrees). So to make this comparison fair, MGS should test clubs with the same loft, like they do with drivers, not the number stamped on the bottom.

Yep. Said the same thing. I don’t know if it completely invalidates the testing but it sures calls some of the results into question. Throw distance out. Head to head – Cobra is slightly better on Accuracy which is noteworthy considering a 6 iron should be slightly less accurate than a 7 iron in most cases. MacGregor is considerably better on Forgiveness. MacGregor is basically 1/2 the price if that matters to you. Seems like almost a dead heat – certainly closer than the scores they awarded – might even favor the MacGregor slightly depending on what each golfer values – price, forgiveness, accuracy.

Always appreciate the MGS reviews and articles. But in this case it seems like Cobra is just playing the game like so many of the OEM’s do. They know fitters use 7 irons and they figure they can sell more sets if the 7 iron goes farther. When you compare the lofts of both sets, the Cobras are 2-3 degrees stronger than the Macs with every club except the 7 iron WHICH IS 4 DEGREES STRONGER! Basically, its a 6 iron in the Mac set so it should go about 12 yards farther. Wouldn’t a better comparison be based on clubs with the same or similar loft instead of the number on the bottom of the club – which doesn’t mean much. So tell me how far the Mac 6 iron goes vs the Cobra 7 iron OR the Cobra 8 iron vs the Mac 7 iron.

Seems to me this creates a problem at the bottom of the bag. The PW is 42 degrees, which is a weak 9 iron in most other players distance sets. Depending on what you want your highest lofted wedge to be, you might need 4 wedges to fill out the bottom of your bag unless you are OK with massive yardage gaps in your wedges. Personally, I prefer tighter distance gaps at the bottom of the bag where I’m trying to score and allow for some larger gaps at the top where an extra 5-6 yards between clubs isn’t as important.

All good points, Brian. I’ve been saying the same thing for the last 2-3 years. MGS isn’t listening. The same thing is true for the McGregor Macspd irons. But the are the most consistent, accurate of the bunch.
