It is arguably one of the most popular golf infomercials ever. From one of the most recognized faces in the history of golf gear.
That’s right; Jack Hamm was screaming “POWWWW!!!” all the way to the bank when he released the famous Hammer X driver.
Jack Hamm supposedly has hit a golf ball a 1/4 mile, has a club head speed of 162 mph, holds 6-World Records and is the father of the big headed driver. Quite a resume. We should add genius marketer to the list. His commercials which boasted “revolutionary” technology like a sword-shaped shaft, a “Zero CC” design and many others promised golfers what they all were so desperate to hear. Distance and lots of it. The Hammer X driver promised to add a whopping 50 yards on all your tee shots. Damn. Could it be true? I have to buy it to see.
What sounds like a joke now, actually sold a lot of drivers. So many that Jack launched product after product in the dark hours between 1AM-4AM on a golf channel near you. Hell, I am willing to bet many of you reading this right now still have one sitting in the garage as a reminder what not to do at 4 AM with a gallon of Rocky Road and a cold one in your lap.
So, of course we did everything in our power to track this guy down. The only intel we could get is that he has apparently gone full covert recluse status, but is still in Denver.
That didn’t stop us though, we decided to put the club to the test once and for all.
INFOMERCIAL:
If you need a refresher on just what the Hammer X can do for your game, have a look below:
ZERO CC’s?
We’ve all seen the gimmicky infomercials – some catchy music, an aggressively upbeat guy with a visor and haircut straight from the 70’s making a TON of unrealistic claims.
It’s about time someone took this driver and put it to the test. If I can add 50 yards to my tee shot for only $100, that new Callaway Epic I just got fit for is going straight back to the store.
HOW WE TESTED
- Two drivers were tested head to head to head (2016 Taylormade M1 and The Hammer X).
- Both were tested at 10.5° (M1 weights in the neutral position).
- Seven golfers with handicaps ranging from 0-15 and driver swing speeds between 90 and 115 mph participated in this test.
- Each tester hit 12-14 shots for each club from every set (frequently rotating between clubs).
- Gross mishits were eliminated and are not included in the shot counts.
- Remaining outliers were identified using Median Absolute Deviation (both distance and offline), and dropped before calculation of the final averages.
- All testers hit Bridgestone B330-RX Golf Balls.
- Ball Data was recorded using a Foresight GC2 Launch Monitor.

CRACKING THE CLAIM
I’m going to be brutally honest – I’m surprised the Hammer X traveled on average over 220 yards. With a E8.6 SwingWeight measured on the Auditor Digital Swing Weight Scale, it feels like you’re swinging a 46-inch pitching wedge.
While it does make a cool “whoosh” sound through the hitting area, the 2016 Taylormade M1 bested the Hammer in almost every category:
- The2016 Taylormade M1 launched over 10 MPH Faster than the Hammer. So much for the Power Core.
- The increased ball speed from the M1 led to an average carry advantage of over 25 Yards Longer over The Hammer.
- Spin rates on the Hammer X were marginally lower than the M1, and the data suggests roll distances do not vary dramatically.
- It is interesting the note the average clubhead speed for the Hammer X was a full 5 MPH slower on average. The sword-shaped shaft fails to cut through the air with greater efficiency.
Hammer X vs M1 2016
Club | Ball Speed | Launch | Spin | Peak Height | Offline | Carry | Total Yards |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
TaylorMade M1 2016 | 141.48 | 16.38 | 2768 | 37.3 | 19.54 | 233.00 | 246.30 |
Hammer X | 130.13 | 16.97 | 2219 | 29.7 | 23.78 | 207.35 | 221.02 |
FOR REAL OR PHONY?
The data speaks for itself.
Not only did the Hammer X fail to live up to a single claim made in the infomercial, it actually performed significantly worse than a mainstream competitor.
With clubhead speed, ball speed, carry…hell, every launch parameter being measurably worse than the M1, it goes without saying that your $100 is at least $95 more than you should spend on the Hammer X.

2 years agoI have had a Hammer Driver 3 wood, putter, and sand wedges for the last 5 years They are great clubs. My best success has been my ability as a 65 year old golfer to hit a 3 wood 200 plus yards on the fairway and a putter I could aim the longest puts straight. I play pretty well all the other clubs.

3 years agoI purchased the hammer x and paid the freight to Australia
I have tried everything to get it to work so have my golfing partners
As far as I am con concerned it is a piece of junk
As one of your reviews sad it is like wracking your club into a piece of concrete
Just rubbish and all the good reviews must have been written by family members of the designer
Very disappointed and I wish I lived in the usa so I could return it and get my money back
I wouldn’t waste any more money sending it back
I got conned and I suppose if it was so good then why are there no professional golfers using it
Very disappointed

3 years agoif you lived in the USA they charge a $29.95 for returning the club plus a $25 restocking fee. Better off selling it on EBay or something similar. Total junk, and false advertising.

3 years agoThree things that debunk the Hammer driver.
1. If the 50 yard increase was real, you would see tour professionals using this club. 50 yards to some means the difference between the PGA tour vs the Web.com tour. There are no tour pros using this club.
2. If the clubs claim were valid, you would see the major manufacturers of clubs copying said design.Only other hack clubs even look close to the hammer.
3. Since no other club promises a 50 yard increase. My suspicion is the hammer may not pass USGA standards for clubs. That may be why the club is only available from Mr. Hammers website, and not through any golf shop or USGA member club.
As the old adage says, if it’s too good to be true…

3 years agoI used to work in the golf industry and demo’d The Hammer driver at our office driving range. My handicap is in the 6-9 range depending on how well I’m playing so I’m a decent ball striker with a driver swingspeed in the low 100’s. This club is trash. I spent a lot of time at that range and knew where my typical carries would land, and this club had to be 25 yards shorter than the OLD Taylormade I had in the bag at the time (I was still playing a R7 and this would have been in ~2012).

3 years agoI just bought the Hammer 500X. I used it this morning on the driving range for the first time. I hit 50 drives. Normally, I hit 20/50 fairways. This morning, using the Hammer, I hit 42/50 fairway shots, right down the middle. I normally hit 225-275 yards, when I hit the fairway. Today, I hit the same distance as I did with the old driver, but, because I was straight down the middle with my drives, I’m sure that it will mean 5-10 less strokes when I play an actual round. I’m very happy with it!
Christian Ericksen
4 years agoThe claims of the Hammer driver are fake, and I’ve never even hit one the clubs. The claims are fake because 1) if the claims made were valid, every other golf club maker would get one, reverse engineer it, and you would see copies based on that design. Look at the current crop of drivers on the market, and most have the same features and design concepts. 2) Again, if the claims were true, and amateurs are seeing 40+ yards in distance with a straighter shot, wouldn’t pros want that club. (Imagine a web.com player adding 40+ yards to his drive, might make the PGA tour) 3) with every club, the manufacturer must submit the club to USGA to be approved for use. And the USGA has a firm stance that consistent, well-struck golf shots will be the result of a players skill and ability, not by an advantage from equipment.

5 years agoI’m no so sure that the hammer x wasn’t on the right track actually it was probably just built with a junk shaft and poor metallurgy. Recently I hit my Titleist 1989 persimmon driver 280 yards on flat ground tee shot no wind with a brand new callaway soft with a graphene core so it’s a modern ball. Ok I swung hard it’s a 43 inch steel DG gold 120+ gram shaft and I am strong however it’s shorter so It was limited. I estimate 108 mph club head speed the ball went high was pured on the millimeter and was the best shot I have hit in 10 years. The thing is I hit the driver 250-260 all the time it’s heavy and grooves my swing and because it’s a solid mass object when you hit it about right it goes deep. To me titanium is just ting it has a lot of mass goes all over the place in direction and when you happen to add 112+ mph speed and hit it right you get 300 yard crushed sometimes other times it’s just wild toe hooks and pop ups it’s actually not very forgiving. Persimmon has less ball speed or ”cor” by nature it’s wood and ceramic inserts yet it seems to go as far or just 12 yards shorter on average than titanium without the added benefit of a 45 inch 65 gram shaft explain this? Imagine a modern more dense material with the limit on ”COR” with a 45 inch 65 gram shaft swinging it 116-mph the whole face would be the hot zone and at 240 cc it wouldn’t pop up,hook and thin hits would;d be low burners all with the same ball speed.

5 years agoSo, the shaft is illegal because it is not designed to bend the same in any direction around its circumference.
“At any point along its length, the shaft must:
(i) bend in such a way that the deflection is the same regardless of how the shaft is rotated about its longitudinal axis; and”
And the head is also illegal as it has a hole(s) in it.
“However, features which are deemed to be in breach of this requirement and are therefore not permitted include, but are not limited to:
(i) All Clubs
holes through the face;
holes through the head (some exceptions may be made for putters and cavity back irons)”

5 years agoSo I decided to try this thing. I’ve seen Jack Hamm’s infomercials for 20 years now on the golf channel as im sure you all have… I figured I’d finally try it. For the price… why not. I took it out on the course without practicing first with it. Bad idea I could barley get it off the ground. I never really hot the sweet spot…
I was on the verge of sending it back. I called and they answered and basically told me the sweet spot is higher on the face due to inverted unique shape… So I had to tee the ball much higher over the face. I tried it at the range and it made a huge difference. It went further than my old driver so I decided to keep it. Not bad for $99. I’d try it to see if it suits your swing or not! I know some of my golf budds who cant hit the Hammer any better than their regular driver while some love it… Like any golf club, putter wedge etc …! So best thing you can do is try it for yourself!

6 years agoI had the same issue I bought this driver online (the new 2017 version) and it actually lost distance at first! I called the company they asked me how high i was teeing it up. I said I tee it up as high as I would any driver… moderate… They said in order for this driver to work due to the inverted face you need to tee it over the face by at least an inch… the higher the better! I did that. It actually worked it went 15 yards further than my Callaway epic! It instantly felt more solid! Kind of stupid if you ask me that you have to tee it so high but hey it worked. Its no doubt the longest driver ive ever hit. When I used it as it was intended!

6 years agoI’ve waited so long for this review.
Rob
6 years agoIt worked for me. Key is you have to tee it higher than normal because of the inverted face. When I tee it the same height s my taylormade it went no where. When I teed it an inch over the head it went 50 yards further than my Taylormade! You have to use the tool properly for it to work. Hope that helps!

6 years agoThe golf informercial said golf magazine
Tested jack’s swing speed at 162
Is that correct?
Ball speed should be about 221
That’s 400+
But the average amateur swings 90 mph
Ball speed 130
221 distance is right
So are these claims false advertising?
Getting 50 yards more seems unlikely.
I was tested for s driver using flight scope
My swing speed tap out at 95-100(best)
Ball speed 130 -140
Result: 209 carry, 224 average
Hit one ball 250 total

Firstly there’s a reason why convertibles are slower than hard tops. Its called wind resistance.

6 years agoI just received the GX-7 X Metal for my Bday. Really waiting for 70 plus degrees to really test it but it is not a bad club. I pulled my 3/4 metal out of my bag and I replaced it with the GX-7. It does hit it nice and high and I can hit it off the deck albeit never fun off the spring mud. It seems to go a bit farther than my 3/4 metal and is easy enough to hit. If you struggle with your driver it may be worth a shot. The big bonus so far, about 15 yards longer than the 3/4 metal when my ball is sitting off the ground in the rough.

Jun Nakiri
6 years agoOK….Hammer head is too heavy is what I understand. How heavy is it actually? Heavy head can produce more energy. E=MC2 and that can mean linger drive. For a guy whoes hwad speed is 162 mph, the results might be different.

6 years agoGood review, but one issue…
The Hammer X came out sometime in 2012 or before (can’t find a precise date with a cursory google search)… to make this a fair test, you should have used the top driver from the year it was released. Just like we’d expect the M1 to best the R11, we’d expect most 2016 clubs to best 2012 clubs. I’m sure the Hammer X would still lose, but this fight was fixed from the start.
