I’ve been playing the Snell MTB blacks since last season. They perform well for me and have a soft feel off the club face and around the green. I am looking forward to playing the X and maybe getting a little better spin around the greens.

Great video and comparison specs at variable swing speeds. Been playing Pro V1 for several years, tried the Chrome for a couple of boxes only. Looking forward to trying Snell MTB-X and Red. Ditto, written write-up prefered

I’d like to see something on longevity. I don’t lose a lot of balls and also am lucky enough to have a monitor at home. In testing, i loved the Bridgestone tour b x. However, after spending some time with the ball I found some problems. Primarily i noticed this at home. The ball, even when the cover appeared to be ok, i found that the balls might last one monitor session before the numbers became erratic. 50 or so shots later the ball would crack but it took that many shots to prove out what i was seeing….

this is very unsettling to me…maybe it’s not relevant to most but I have not seen this issue with Prov lines.

I play Snell MTB Black and Red and find the performance to be as good as any premium brand golf ball. So I trust that if the new MTB X is an improvement, then it is worth having. It is refreshing to find a truly comparable golf ball for less money. It is a trend I wish would catch on with equipment manufacturers. Well done Mr. Snell.

Good info. I have a 95 mph swing speed and currently play the Callaway Chrome Soft. It would be interesting to see a comprehensive golf ball test instead of benchmarking all new balls to the ProV1. Thanks!!

Funny how they test Snell against a pro v1. It’s not even the second best ball out there. No matter what they cost the TP5x is the best ball out by far, just ask Fowler.

Would love some Snell MTB-Xs for my windy course in Ireland. Currently play MTB Black and have tried MTB Red. I think MTB-X could be perfect for me given the adjustments made. As usual Dean is constantly innovating, listening to his customers’ feedback and making his great product even better. When will MTB-X available this side of the Atlantic? Snell are a must-try golf ball for any avid golfer.

I bought a test pack of Snell MTB Black and Reds a couple of weeks ago. Though I wanted to like the Red better, the Black is honestly the best for me. Probably because I have the swing speed of a snail on glue-covered coarse sandpaper. I’m so glad the Black is now offered in optic yellow. It really confused my playing partners when I teed up with a white MTB Black.

I have played the Snell ball for some time. I bought mine right after the first test on Mygolfspy, and it preformed as good or better than the Prov1x for me. This was especially true with the wedges to achieve higher stopping spin.

I bought some of the MTB Red at the end of last year and haven’t had a chance to play with them yet due to the weather. Played the Black before that and now I really want to try the MTB-X. Thanks for the ball test and the review, I’m ready for summer. Just to add I started playing the 3 UP ball about 6 years ago until they had to go out of business because of being sued by Titleist and will now be a Snell ball user.

Now if Snell would make a low compression, urethane cover ball, with feel as soft as say a Chrome Soft, Supersoft, Wilson Duo Professional/Urethane, or Srixon Q-Star Tour… at the $24-29 price point… they’d take a big share of that market. Push the Get Sum down to $20-22, new soft urethane at $27-29, MTBs at $32 would be a winner combo

Honest question here. How can a ball affect launch angle? I understand the influence a ball can have on overall height etc. through dimple technology and aerodynamics but can the ball itself really have an affect on the initial launch? I’m guessing it’s safe to say that the slight variance in launch in a test like this is a result of the human variable? Nevertheless, I’m not suggesting you leave the info out, just wondering if it’s actually relevant? Thanks

I’ve taken up the SNELL golf balls since they came out and honestly find them pretty good in distance and feel..But I have to say there’s to much emphasis put on the role of the ball in modern golf .I play golf since 1960:we had the “small ” English ball and the “larger ” American ball “at that time .The latter took over with a resulting loss of distance .I found recently a very old box of MAXFLI RED DOT BALATA balls (New )at my home .Il played them on the golf course :well they proved as good as the SNELL’s and PRO V1’s of today ;The “feel ” of the balata ball is much better than the feel of the modern 4 piece balls of today

Sorry, but I highly doubt your claim about this “very old” Maxfli ball and it’s current performance. Several years ago I took out not only some Maxfli HTs (also balata and a favorite on the senior tour in it’s heyday) but also sleeve of Titleist Professionals. Neither one of them traveled more than 180 yards, they were as dead as could be at that age, just plain dead.

I agree with Vince. I believe the only advantage the old balata balls had was they were easier to work left and right, but the durability of the old balls is not even worth discussion. There’s a reason tour players play the new balls, and their golf courses are being lengthened as a result.

One of my golf buddies has used snell balls for about three years and swears by them. He gave me a sleeve and I must say they performed very well, for anyone looking for a little more distance from all clubs this should be a ball they try .

I have never bought any Snells, but I’ve found a few and played them. I’ve only found Red and would like to try the Black and the new X sounds good.
I have a question about the cost structure though…Dean says the cost difference is due to paying pros, advertising and the multiple levels of transactions…he doesn’t mention that Snell is made in China, so there has to be some amount of cost savings due to that.

Agreed Andrew. During the last big strike at the ports here on the west coast you couldn’t get many brands of golf balls, especially Titleist. Why, because they come from the same places overseas.

Lots of titleist balls are made on the east coast. China is closer so maybe those balls are not as easily available and this titleist are harder I come by. Just a thought

Always nice to see that there are options out there that are affordable. I usually play the Srixon Zstar XV because it’s a great ball and it seems to be the one that always go on sale for a very good price (25$/dozen last year). But I will surely try Snell one day (unless Srixon keeps up with their promotion),,,

I play both the MTB black and red. Yes I loose a little distance with the red but notice the extra spin. Best balls out there by far in comparison to any of the big companies. I generally order 15 dozen every year in May with company log which Snell does for me. Client love them. Looking forward to trying the MTB-X especially since I like to play yellow balls. Great work Dean and great work by MyGolfSpy, love your reviews.

Only thing missing was including the MTB Black to show the specific separation between the two models.

Played great for half the season with the Red. Switched to the Black for second half. Both great balls. I didn’t mind the Red cover but did notice it struggled in wind. Looking forward to trying the X.

Have been playing Snell for about 3 years…only downside is that the Black seemed a little harder control when hitting into greens. Definitely going to try the MTB X. One question for MGS: Why not do this test with a cross section of 10 top balls — from Chrome Soft to Vice…and all in between? That would really be helpful…as a young Senior(68) with a 90 MPH I need to know what the balls will do.

Why was Snell able to provide both versions yet you only tested prov1? Why wasn’t the prov1 x tested as well?

Because the Prov1x would be longer than any of those tested. This test may show that they are comparable distance wise, but what about chipping? What about durability and dependability. Is every ball going to perform the same. We know Titliest do? That is the reason lower handicapped players will continue to pay for the Titliest. They trust them.
I have a hard time trusting an independent test when the owner of the one company is there trying to promote his product. If it was truly independent and unbiased, there would be no need for the Snell guy to be there.

That’s horsecrap, and you know it! The guys at MyGolfSpy AND Dean Snell are as reputable as they come. ProV1 is the most trusted because it’s been around the longest and is the #1 Ball in Golf. But does that mean it’s the best? Absolutely not! Tests have proven that the new TaylorMade TP5x and Srixon XV are longer than the ProV1x, and they spin just as much around the green. If you want to keep paying top dollAr for golf balls, keep buying Titleist. I bought the original Snell MTB and the MTB Red and found them to be as good or better than any other tour ball at $20 less per dozen. I know where my money is going!!

Last year I played the Red in yellow. Now that both balls are in yellow, I am going to have to do some research as to which one is going to be best for me. I only have a 85-90 MPH driver swing speed. Looking forward to playing them.

I am always looking for a better ball than Pro VI. I am currently trying the Vice Pro Soft in Green-Yellow. I really like the feel, especially on a putter. Very solid feel. Not too soft. Off the driver it is fine, but green side spin is a little less than hoped. But at $25 per dozen still a good value. Would love to try some Snells and give an honest opinion. I have only hit a few that I accumulated in the woods. Thanks, Brad G.

Interesting information!! Would love to give them a try.. I’m a 1 handicap at my local course with about a 110mph swing speed and use a ball designed for swing speeds over 70mph just to show my other league members… It’s not the ball!! Play what you feel comfortable with and what you can afford!!

I did a test of Snell’s original “My Tour Ball” several years ago and have been hooked ever since. Like many others, I tried the revision of MTB Black and MTB Red. For me, MTB Black was the better fit.
When I heard the news there was a new product coming – I thought to myself ‘what could it possibly be? they already have some fantastic balls’.
After watching this video (very well done, btw) I’m anxious to try the new MTB-X balls.

As I have gotten a little older, swing speed is down to 87-90 range. I’ve been playing the Black to get a little more distance, but the numbers for the X look REALLY good! I’m definitely going to try the X and see how it compares to the Black with my swing speed. Dean, you are making some great golf balls, at a price that no one can beat. Who wouldn’t want to play a ball like that!

I have played prov1, prov1x, tp5x and a number of Callaway and srixon. The prov1 seems bext for me. As I age, my swing speed has reduced to 95 to 100mph. I would love to try the new Snell MTBX ball

Just finished watching the Snell announcement video and then saw this review. been playing the Snell MTB since it was first released and most recently have been playing the MTB Black. Great ball at a great price, and comparable to any other premium ball out there. Wasn’t a big fan of the Red but this new X sounds like it worked out all the kinks and for most players adding spin around the green is a good thing. Really like the honest presentation of the ball technology from Dean too. I’ll be ordering the Black and X balls once they arrive next month for sure. Another nice review by MGS!!

Been playing Snell MTB mostly except in the winter months. Because of my eyesight I need a yellow ball.

I tried the Red last week. Good ball but I lost a bit of distance, not much but it was noticeable. Looking forward to trying the X.

I’ve been turning my friends on to the Snell golf balls for years. I’ve played Pro V-1’s because I like the feel around the greens. The Snell golf balls are just as good or better. The price is definitely a better value. I’m an accomplished player with a 3 hcp and prefer a high performance golf ball. The only reason why I wouldn’t play Snell’s is because I forgot to order them on line. Not as convenient as the pro shop but worth the effort.

The original MTB and MTB Black are great balls. Did not care for the MTB Red. Even though the X will probably be a little firmer than I like, certainly want to try them for myself. Love what deal is doing with the new tier pricing format. Snell balls have always been a tremendous value and 2019 looks even better.

Played quite a few rounds the last couple years with the original black and was satisfied enough for the price. Not so much with the Red, no where even remotely close to any of the ProV’s, really didn’t like anything about it. Played like a Pinnacle, no thanks. Still a believer that the black is a great low cost substitute for the ProV lover. I don’t lose enough balls to be overly concerned with the price so I’ll stick to ProV’s for any type of competitive rounds.

I played 5 dz OK ball, cuts to easy for my taste. Good ball if your looking to save some cash but, it ain’t no Titleist ProV when playing your short game.

If your ball cuts too easy then you have a swing that should never be touching a pro V1. Unless you are referring to cover scraping that relates to hitting wedge shots with lots of back spin.

When you smash the ball on the face it causes a violent reaction and fiction. Fiction equals heat, heat melts plastic, after 3 holes Snell’s shell cuts, scrapes or whatever you would like to call it. Now, let’s add the grooves of well prepared clubs, all this equals cutting. Snell’s just are no made to take hard hits and sharp wedge grooves. Good ball, but it ain’t no Pro V or Bridgestone RXS.
Equal to Bridgestone e6 at best.

For someone with a 90 mph driver speed would the primary difference between the X and the Black basically be feel with the X a little firmer and the Black a little softer? I know Dean said the Black takes a little spin off but I’m not sure a my swing speed it will make that much difference. BTW I have 7 hdcp index and am able to maintain this because of a pretty good short game.

No mention is ever made, but it’s safe to think these are USGA conforming, right?

Enjoyed the video. I’ve played all the Snell balls and love them. The Red is definitely longer for me, but the Get Sum for a reason I don’t understand is straighter, but not as long. Given I play a narrow course and not that long, it’s hard to keep the GS in my pocket. I’m sure I’ll be ordering some yellow X’s soon.

After watching this video completely it appears that the PRO V1 and the new Snell MTB-X are so close in performance data that the biggest difference is price. And for that reason viewers who like wasting their money on Titleist Pro V1’s should buy the new Snell ball. Thanks Dean, keep up the great work.

Really enjoyed that video. I knew of Dean’s background with Titleist and the original ProV1, bu thad no idea about the TM Red and Lethal balls. I was an avid Red user when it was being produced.

I have just never gotten around to trying Snell, mostly because it’s easier just to pick up the ProV or ZStar in the pro-shop, versus taking time to do an online order.

But I will certainly order a couple dozen of the MTB X to try out.

I started playing the original Snell MTB four years ago. I switched to the MTB Red when it came out and am still playing it. I have given balls to anyone and everyone that I can get to try them. I personally tested the Snell ball against the pro V and could not find any appreciable difference. I maintain a handicap of zero to one, so the golf ball is important to me. I absolutely would not play Snell just because of price, but when you combine performance and price it’s a no brainer. I have already pre-ordered the MTB-X value pack even though I still have four dozen unopened MTB-Reds. Those reds will make for an excellent bag of practice balls! Thanks to Dean Snell and all his staff for continuing to provide outstanding products at outstanding value!

I’ve been playing the MTB Red since late 2017. I’ve already bought my supply for this season (during Snell’s Red Sox World Series promotion), but I’ll definitely check out the MTB-X when my supply starts to run short. I hate the idea of spending $40+ for a box of balls, so it is great to get top shelf performance for a much lower price.

Really, really looking forward to testing MTB Black vs MTB-X. Apparently, Titleist brought the speed UP (to the Snell) for the 2019 ProV1, but Snell keeps giving “em a hip check.

Huge fan of MyGolfSpy and Snell, thanks much for the test. As soon as I finish this post, I’m heading over to Snell to pre-order a dozen yellow MTB-X. I was one of those customers blow up his phone after your test. Dean Snell is killing it.

The Snell 2017 MTB was good but the 2018 MTB-Black is way better. I’ve purchased at least 16 dozen of them in 2018. Since I play nearly every day, I like to put a new ball in for tournaments or special outings and find that the ball will hold up well, to my standard, for at least two rounds. The ball is longer than anything I tried during the Spring of 2018.

What was very cool about your podcast, was watching Dean’s reaction when someone slid the sleeve of the new ProV1s across the table. The man didn’t hesitate to want to test his ball against the “big guy’s” ball. Not sure if that was staged, but it was golden! For competitive reasons, I typically don’t share why I use certain equipment when I play but I love to tell the story about Snell, especially when I tell them what I pay and that shipping is free.

I DON’T UNDERSTAND THE DATA PRESENTED FOR WEDGE SHOTS AT 85 MPH SWING SPEED (I ASSUME THAT MEANS 85 MPH WITH A DRIVER; WEDGE SWING SPEED WOULD NECESSARILY BE LESS). THE DISTANCE YOU FOUND WITH THE DRIVER AND THE 7 IRON AT THAT SWING SPEED IS UNDERSTANDABLE; HOWEVER, THE DISTANCE FOR THE WEDGE AT THAT SWING SPEED IS BIZARRE. I’M AN 85-88 MPH SWING SPEED PLAYER WITH THE DRIVER; MY PITCHING WEDGE GOES 110 YARDS AND MY SAND WEDGE GOES 85-90 YARDS. ANY THOUGHTS ON AN EXPLANATION?

These balls are not designed for someone with your swingspeed. The testing is commensurate for the speed of player who would actually see a benefit from a premium ball.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear enough: the data presented for distance with these three balls at my general swing speed (85-88 with a driver) makes perfect sense for the driver distances and the 7 iron distances; however, I hit my sand wedge 15-20 yards further than the sand wedge distances shown in the table…is there an explanation for this discrepancy? Were the sand wedge swings not full swings?
(and Yannish, I don’t think Dean Snell would agree with you that his balls weren’t designed for my swing speed…I assume he sees his market as bigger than only those guys who hit it 319…)

Swing speed is not the only factor in determining distance. Two people can have the same swing speed and one may maximize his distance by the way he swings and the other doesn’t. For example, with a driver in order to maximize distance you need to swing with a slight upward strike. If you swing down with the driver at 90 mph, the guy that swings up will hit it 20 yard or more farther. Especially if his strike is on the sweet spot and yours is not. Then the difference is really exaggerated. By the same token, if you hit down on your driver and irons and the other guy swings up or sweeps his irons, you are going to hit those longer. I know guys who are very long with irons and short with the driver for that reason.

Someone with a very swing speed can get by hitting down with a driver. In fact, most pros have a slight downward pass with the driver. But anyone with less than 100mph needs to have an upward pass at the ball with the driver. More lag with a slower swing speed will go farther than a faster swing with no lag.

It apoears the higher swingspeeds see the biggest changes in performance. For your average golfer it comes down to price see data shows basically no change. Money in my wallet is better then in theirs.

Trust me when I tell you that I’m the only golfer playing the Snell MTB Red in Uruguay. I’ve given away sleeves of them to my buddies and they all love the ball . Keep in mind that a sleeve of Pro-V1s cost US$25 at the clubhouse. So imagine when I tell someone that one dozen Snell balls only cost me $28.
Once I work my way through the six dozen I purchased in 2018 I´ll be looking towards six dozen of the MTB-X.
Dean found the right business model for success and we’re all better off for it.

I’ve tried a couple Snell balls that I found on course and didn’t find them any better or worse than ProV’s that I was playing last year. This year I moved to TP5’s and just really like the overall performance of this ball. If only they would remain $35/doz in the future!

Currently playing the MTB Black, switched from the Reds. Played TP5 before switching to Snell, I’ve shot some of my lowest rounds with Snell. Great ball, great value. Would love the chance to try the new MTBx, white.

Great video! Dean Snell has been a long-time contributor to MGS on the forum, and I have appreciated his comments over the years.

I have played the original Snell MTB and liked it, but haven’t played the new MTB Red or Black. It sounds like the MTB X is the ball I should use. I will be getting some as soon as the snow melts!!

Hope to see more side-by-side comparisons like this.

I’ve been playing Snell balls for a couple of years now, I get the same performance as the $50 a dozen balls at about half the price!

I’ll definitely order up a dozen of the MTB-X and give them a shot

Good review. Would like to have seen descent angle on the iron shots simply because that is a factor in determining overall stopping power, but still easy enough to deduce (stopping power) based on launch, spin, and the difference between carry and total distance. I agree with the MTB having a substantial feel at impact (not hard just more substantial/noticeable) – currently gaming the MTB Black and that’s one thing that stands out compared to other brands I’ve played. Great ball all around, but will likely switch to something else just based on preferred feel. Performance is absolutely top-notch from Snell.

After trying the Trial pack I prefer the MTB-X tee to green a great performer. Like the Yellow version.
