First Look – PING Forged Tour Irons & GLIDE Forged Wedges

ping-forged-tour (2)

PING’s release cycles are among the most predictably reliable in the golf equipment world, and the calendar tells us that both iBlade and the GLIDE 2.0 wedge are up next for updating.

Given that, it’s anything but a surprise to see that replacements for both models have either found their way to the USGA’s conforming groove list, or – in the case of the wedge – into Bubba Watson’s bag.

What is surprising is that both new clubs are forged. To the best of our recollection, PING hasn’t released a forged iron since Anser. PING’s R&D team has consistently told us that they’d only forge a club when they believe forging will allow them to make a better product?

Is that the case here? PING isn’t talking yet, but we’re definitely looking forward to hearing more about the Forged Tour iron.

Photos of the GLIDE Forged Wedge come to us via a tweet from PGA Tour’s Jonathan Wall. PING has been doing quite a bit of internal testing in the wedge space of late, but my suspicion – based on nothing but a hunch – is that the GLIDE Forged will prove to be a line extension rather than a direct replacement for the GLIDE 2.0.

As with the new irons, we’ll have to wait until PING is ready to talk to get the full story.

If PING’s pattern holds, full details for both new clubs should emerge sometime between mid-July and early August.

The oval milled area near the toe of the club is where the i500 logo is stamped or layered on the club. I guess they wanted to be sure that there’d be no spy photos of the complete club. It will be hollow, with no foam or filling of any sort according to all reports. They will begin to ship on July 31.

Christmas 1990, never will forget that morning- woke up to a set of Eye 2 Black dot’s 1-SW. The clubs were likely 1” long and 1-2* too upright, but I couldn’t get enough time on the range to watch the ball takeoff like a .22 rifle. Gamed them from 4’th grade through high school and beyond. Didn’t upgrade until Mizuno released the MX23.

My only question is- will my 62yr old buddy still be able to say “Thank You Karsten Solheim!” when his ball lands on the green after catching his 4i out on the toe on a 190 yd par 3.

Nice, putting some metal workers to work in China banging out some irons and wedges. Same plant as others use for forging?

I played ping i3 blades which were a cast iron as a middle school golfer. Then I was I introduced to Mizuno forged blades and have never looked back. What I can say about ping cast players irons are they fell amazing. But the current market for years now has offered many choices of mb and cb irons forged. And with as forgiving as current forged cb irons are it’s hard to justify cast players irons. For years Ping stuck to their guns saying they wouldn’t forge unless it needed to be. They fell behind times with that mentality. When you can go get Forged blades from any major club maker it’s hard for the better player to pick a cast ping iron. I still think cast players irons have a place, but Ping needs a forged iron to compete with everyone else. They have jumped way ahead in terms of the G400 series woods.. it only makes since they want to dominate the iron department again as well. I can’t promise these new ping irons will replace mine, but at least I can finally test some Ping forged blades :)

Regarding Ping “feel” – try the S55 irons next to a forged iron and report back on that. My S55s feel better (softer w/feedback) than my Mizzy MP 30s, which I love, too.

Could this be the first iron and wedge without a CTP? The pictures say yes and that would make me so happy. I could tinker in my garage and not have to send them to the factory for swing weight adjustments. They need to be more like OEM’s and stop using parts we can’t get our hands on.

Hopefully they will feel better than their last forged offering.

They look nice, kind of a more stream looking p790. I wonder if they’re going to be hollow like others are doing.

Is that a small milled pocket on the toe side (looks like an oval pill)? Or is it just something hiding the possible name of this club?

Or to possibly move some weight from the toe and move CG more to the dead center and away from the toe?

Tony, please let me know your preference on Top wedges for a 10 Handicap. My buddy loves his Ping Glides but I hear the Vokey SM7 is the latest and most forgiving wedge. Thanks in advance.

      The forged iron isn’t a blade it’s kind of a ping p790.

Ping picks function over fashion. I don’t think they will be bring these to market unless they believe they will perform at least as well as their other products.

Hopefully this means that Ping has made irons and wedges that are as good or better than their cast offerings….and NOT that they are feeling market pressure from other OEM’s.
One of the endearing things about Ping is their commit to tradition. I’d hate to see that come undone…they make -and have for decades- the best cast irons in the business.

Ping cast irons G400 and Alta CB shafts are great value for money and the best at this point in time, now forged irons are expected after PXG raising the bar with forgred irons- of 4 types.

      Competitors which give
PXG type irons at reasonable prices is going to be a big success and I hope Ping does it before others.
      Cheers
