Vokey WedgeWorks Low Bounce K Grind Wedge

Other than being a couple of weeks late (the first WedgeWorks offering typically arrives in time for the Masters rather than just after), the launch of the Vokey WedgeWorks Low Bounce K Grind Lob Wedge is reasonably predictable.

You may not have noticed but the Low Bounce K was the first grind to hit WedgeWorks after SM8 hit shelves in 2020. The same was true following the launch of SM9 in 2022.

There’s a pattern here.

The Low Bounce K Grind is the first WedgeWorks offering of the SM10 lineup

You can chalk the predictability up to the evolving strategy behind Vokey’s limited-edition WedgeWorks platform. To be sure, you’re still going to see a few limited releases that are arguably impractical (though immensely fun) oddballs, but WedgeWorks has become the permanent home to loft, bounce and grind offerings that would likely be in the retail lineup were there unlimited space on retail shelves.

There isn’t but there is unlimited space at WedgeWorks.

The point here is that you won’t need to worry about the Low Bounce K Grind selling out. It will be available through WedgeWorks for the duration of the SM10 product cycles so, when members of the IYKYK crowd decide they need a Low Bounce K, it’s going to be there.

While we’re at it, Vokey guys, how about we do the same thing with the V Grind (preferably in Slate Blue, which is the best finish).

About the WedgeWorks Low Bounce K Grind

The large, wide sole is the signature characteristic of the Vokey K Grind wedge

The Low Bounce K Grind is Vokey’s highest-bounce, low-bounce wedge.

Make sense? I didn’t think so.

To understand where the Low Bounce K fits in the Vokey Wedge lineup, it’s helpful to think of part of the grind selection process as finding the right balance between forgiveness and versatility.

At one end of the spectrum is the T Grind. It has a bit less bounce than the Low Bounce K but its defining feature is the aggressive release in the heel, toe and trailing edge. It’s the definition of versatility around the green which helps to explain why the T Grind became so popular on the PGA Tour that it was impossible to keep it out of the retail lineup.

We can talk about firm conditions and shallow swings (both fit the grind to a T. Sorry.), but the true strength of the T Grind is its versatility and what it offers for golfers who like to manipulate the face around the green.

The tradeoff is that, with a leading edge that sits at ground level in nearly any orientation, the T Grind has a tendency to dig (it’s not forgiving) when your strike is less than precise. That’s especially true in soft conditions. It’s the reason the T Grind comes out of my bag when conditions are soft.

The Low Bounce K sole is significantly wider with less relief than a T Grind.

The L Grind (Vokey’s other four-degree grind) is technically out of Vokey Wedge lineup (for now) but it helps to put the Low Bounce K in context.

The L has some sole relief but not quite as much as T Grind. With that, you lose a little versatility but gain a bit of protection against the fat shot. It sits somewhere in the middle between T and LBK.

The Low Bounce K is the most forgiving of Vokey’s Low Bounce lob wedge offerings. With six degrees of bounce, it’s not as quite as low bounce as the T or L (both four), but it’s lower-bounce than the D, M, S or standard K grinds.

The defining feature is the wide, cambered sole of the original (14-degree K Grind).

While there is a bit of sole relief that allows for some face manipulation, the Low Bounce K shines for golfers who favor square-face shots but still benefit from low bounce (shallow attack angles, firm conditions), with far less risk of digging than a T or L Grind.

It’s not entirely versatile but it’s extremely forgiving.

Perhaps the Low Bounce K Grind wedge’s biggest strength is out of bunkers where the wider sole glides through sand – particularly in deep, soft bunkers. It’s the reason why K grind has earned a reputation (in Vokey circles anyway) as the ultimate bunker club.

So, if you’re looking for the ultimate bunker club with lower bounce, the WedgeWorks Low Bounce K might be the answer.

I have an old 58* low K. Loved it around the green. Especially from fairway height grass. Ironically I parked it because I did not like it out of the bunkers.

I play a 58* wedge with a 6* bounce forged wedge and absolutely love it. Anything within 30 yards it’s pure money. I like the Vokey wedge and sole but not for $225 or anywhere close to that!

The wide sole, “low” bounce Lob Wedge gave me what little bunker game I have…thank you Maltby Golfworks who was way ahead of the infomercial wedges. Now I have a bit more game and can use a less wide, but still wide sole. I was going to order one from Titleist, but you can get them standard from Callaway or TM so no waiting.

My favorite wedge is an 8 degree lob wedge. I get out of bunkers without fail every time and normally get it pretty close. I also use it for those 80 yards and in shots whether I need to hit it high or low with spin. It is so versatile.

It is time for new wedges so I will keep these in mind.

My favorite lob wedge ever, was an SM6 58L. I haven’t tried the T grind yet but I very much miss the L grind in a 58.
