2021 Driver Satisfaction Survey

A few months back, we asked you to tell us about your most recent club purchases. This time around, we want to dig a little deeper to understand how happy you are with what you’re playing right now.

We want to know what you’re playing, if you were fitted for it and how well it has performed for you since. As we look for correlations within the data, this could get interesting.

Do golfers who get fitted see better results on the course? Are owners of certain brands more satisfied with their purchases than others?

Those are exactly the kind of answers we hope to find.

Click here to take the survey.

Knowing my specs from years of playing I self fit by renting a trackman at a local course narrowed it down to 2 drivers and on course performance over the course of 3 months revealed the winner. Shafts were changed on the final two heads and finally head weights were changed on the final driver to dial in performance and being able to work the flight of the ball which by the way wasn’t a choice in criteria for choosing the winner in the survey. I don’t recommend my way for others as most wouldn’t know their specs or have the patience to go through the process.

I got fitted for a Driver & was between a regular and a stiff shaft.
I thought I wasn’t getting any younger so I tried an upgraded regular shaft.
It was OK, but I asked if I could try a stiff shaft & my numbers went. Up substantially.
I asked to try an upgraded stiff shaft & again my numbers increased both in grouping & distance.
      I purchased that combination.
After rising the club for. Few rounds I told my son (scratch golfer) to try it.
I pt a tour stiff shaft inn the club and he tried it & loved it.
I forgot to replace the tour stiff shaft for my up graded stiff shaft
I ended up keeping the. tour stiff shaft inn my club as my distance & accuracy was better with the tour stiff shaft.
When I. checked the spec’s out on both shafts the tour. stiff shaft was. Stiffer.
Try everything out on the course if you can.
Hitting in a net can be iffy!

I tried to take the survey but it did not match my experience. I have a Maltby component head and a specialized Xcaliber RT shaft. Anyway in my experience being fitted is a very inexact science. Typically after finding a club that performs the best, a duplicate is ordered with the same specs. Problem is there are almost always minor differences in both the head and shaft that ultimately will perform differently than the testing club.. Important to walk away with the actual club that was used in the test for the test to be meaningful.

How are you liking the Xcaliber shaft? I have an older model in my 5 wood and have been thinking of replacing my driver shaft.

Tony: I wish you had added a selection re: fitting of: “I didn’t get fitted this time, but I knew my specifications”.. I think your answers will be skewed to “Didn’t get fit”, but you could have narrowed that down a lot more.

I have known my fitter for more than 7 years and we have worked to get me not only into the right club head but also in to the correct shaft. I am 74 years old and I went to a stronger shaft with a higher flex point so that I could keep the ball down a bit. The club and shaft combination has given me more accuracy and as we all know it is easier to hit greens from the fairway rather than the rougn

The survey is short on substance in my view. I love my Cleveland Turbo after I had it re-shafted with a more favorable shaft. The look, sound, feel, and dispersion are much better now. The distance is about the same but my confidence is much higher.

Ok, bought a new driver in 2019. Went out and demo’d everything under the sun. All the usual suspects. As a lark I tried the Tommy Armour Atomic. Ok everybody roll your eyes, I don’t blame you. Bought it anyway as a stop gap.

Thing is I hit it further and tighter than everything thing else. Thing is the was a $99 driver. I was ready to spend $500+.

So in 2020 I spent 2 hours with a fitter. Couldn’t find any that hit better.

Earlier this year same thing went to a couple of fitters, all that changing shafts and heads and lofts, still couldn’t find anything better than the Tommy Armour Atomic.

So because I have so little invested in the TA, next year when the 2022s come out I’ll try again.

I really believe fitting is the way to go, just hasn’t worked out for me yet.

The fitting process has worked perfect for you! All the fitters you’ve gone to (as you said) & the bottom line is, that $99 TA driver still is the best bet for you. What answers are you looking for & why is you so anxious to drop another $550 on a new driver and then maybe another couple hundred upgrading the shaft? To add what, 2 yd distance? There is no magic driver that’s coming out in 2022 that’ll give you 20 more yards.

I wish my results were always that clear. Dude, you’re playing with house money, enjoy it!

I live in Mexico, so trying new clubs or getting fitted is not possible. I was in Austin, TX visiting family recently, so i made a couple of trips to PGA Superstore and Golf Galaxy to see if i was missing out on newer technology. I’ve been playing a 2007 Tour Burner TP 9.5 degree with a stiff upgraded shaft, and i felt like at 60 yrs old, it might be time to get something more age appropriate. After hitting a ton of balls on launch monitor, unassisted and unmolested, i wound up with a $199 Tommy Armour 845, Reg shaft, 10.5 degree. The Sim 2 Max performed just as well, but not better, and at 2.5x the price, it was a no brained. I’m very happy with it – my driving distance avg has gone up from 249 to 263, and I’ve pretty much eliminated the big right miss. Interestingly, i was seeing around 1,000 rpm less spin with a reg shaft vs stiff, 2300 vs 3300. There’s a lot of marketing cost in the big name products.

I got fitted at CC in 2018 resulting a Ping G400 and Project X Evenflow Black 6.0S 65g shaft. This shaft broke earlier this year and I found out it has been discontinued. I borrowed a demo G425 and hit it pretty well, but I wanted to see the numbers compared to other options so I did another fitting. The 425 fell to either a TSi4 or Srixon Z7 with a Diamana TB 60S; I was able to find a replacement Evenflow Black, but I have the Srixon being built as a back-up. I am going to go back in and compare them both now that I have the replacement shaft in my G400 though. Honestly, if the shaft had not splintered I wouldn’t even have considered making a change.

I agree with previous comments. The head testing was the easiest, and shortest part of my fitting process. Getting the right shaft combo was the hardest part, but that topic wasn’t brought up in the survey…….maybe because we will see a shaft survey down the line? Possibly?

I filled out the survey but feel there was a vital missing element to the survey that anyone who gets fit understands. The actual driver head can be a small factor in the solution! There was not a single question asked about the shaft in the survey. In my experience, the gates of heaven opened when the fitter handed me a driver with a heavier, fairway metal length shaft. Though my swings speed went down a few mph, my smash factor went up and spin down. I chose a Srixon Z785 head but the Oban Devotion HB 75 shaft was the “secret sauce” for improvement

You have missed a point. I bought a new driver to change the shaft. It was just as cheap to buy a previous year driver rather than have the shaft and grip changed.

Just took the Driver Satisfaction Survey and was kind of disappointed in the depth of it. Specifically, it did not address what for most is the most important thing —the shaft. I guess you can make reasonable assumptions about the importance of custom shafts to most better players based on the responses concerning cost and fitting, but still would have thought asking for more detail on shaft choice would have been more illuminating. For example, in my case, I’m almost 100% certain I’d stick with my driver head again (TSi3) but less so I wouldn’t want to try a different shaft next time. Speaking of how have y’all not done an Autoflex review/test yet? The people need and expect that from a primo gear nerd site like this haha. Thanks!

While I’ve been fitted for irons on more then one occasion (mostly good results) I’ve only been really been fitted for driver one time with below average results (I think the guy got more $$$ for selling me his choice). Now days taking a few at a time in the simulator and hoping there’s a ball I play in it and hitting drivers until one of the them meets my expectations has been the way I go.

My last fitting was at Club Champion where I bought a TaylorMade M6 with a VERY expensive shaft. I am now back playing my Ping G 400 that I bought off the rack. Not saying the result was their fault but it is the way it turned out. With all of the additional shaft options many manufacturers are offering now I really wonder if paying $250 for a shaft is really worth it for a 13 handicap player anymore, if it ever was.

Great post, I am sort of in the same mindset. I had a credit at one of the golf stores so ended up purchasing an expensive aftermarket shaft. Unfortunately for me, they put on a left-handed tip (believe me, unless you look at the tips closely it’s hard to know the difference).. So I played a full season with wondering why my trajectories were never optimal. So this season I’ll try things with the correct tip. But if I had had to spend the full $400 out of pocket for that shaft, would I? Probably not. You have to put a price on the incremental benefits you’ll get from spending that kind of $.

It was Club Champion with two fitters. One was a regional manager. It was also expensive. I have been fitted by a few different fitters and it is usually hit or miss. I’ve been through it enough times I think I can do it myself with better results.

Should ask about shaft and other specs, also sometimes new drivers take a little getting used to so it would help to see if performance improves over time.

I think the question around whether or not I would buy the same driver after asking if someone was fitted do not seem to align. Would I buy my same driver? I have no idea, I would get fitted and if by chance that same brand is the best for me then I would buy it. I guess that fits I might buy it again?

I think there should have been questions directed at the shaft if fit by a fitter. I am happy with the head, however, I have been through three aftermarket shafts trying to dial in the feel while having the ability to back off my swing for some added accuracy but also being able to lean on it a bit more. I am headed back for additional conversations on that with my fitter.

Just took your latest survey on Driver purchase.
I would like to add that the fitting cost was for a complete set of clubs – (11) total. I spent 1 1/2 hrs. with Stan Ball, owner professional/ owner/fitter. .He put me into a senior (40)g graphite shaft for all of the Ping clubs.. My previous set of clubs were Mizuno 850 forged irons with reg. stl. shaft.

You need to have some questions about brand loyalty. I have been using Cobra clubs for at least 10 years with very good results. and I would not even consider switching to Callaway or TaylorMade. Players that use these other brand’s are just as loyal.

My experience with my fitting was indoors on a mat with a tee that did not replicate my outdoor tee height (too low & unable to hit up on the ball). The fitter was focused on carry distance and not overall distance. The end result was a driver that was hitting shorter than my previous driver.. The driver I bought was an M6 with a $300 shaft upgrade. After receiving & playing with my driver, I reset the loft as low as possible and reset the purred shaft to the loft setting and have been playing it since. I have not tried my old driver which is a Taylormade R 11s with a regular stock shaft.

I went in for a fitting with my old driver to see if a different shaft would make a difference. It seem so indoors with a monitor. I then found an upgraded head and placed the shaft in it. Then as happens I found a different driver & 3 wood for sale at a really good price. Bought it and had them reshafted. I have been going back and forth trying to decide which one.

I’m 70 and bought a Ping G25 several years ago. Everyone told me to get the senior flex so I did. However when trying a few of my friends drivers with regular or stiff shafts I found that I gained more distance and accuracy. I guess seniors should not just take for granted that. They need a senior flex. Thanks

I bought my driver as part of a Tour Edge complete set so cost was folded into the full cost. I didn’t like the question format which required an answer for everything. “Does not apply” needs to be part of the options.
When I bought my new clubs, customers could not try them out because of the pandemic restrictions. Otherwise I would have tried them before buying them. Having said that, so far, so good, just need to nail down the distance gaps between clubs.

One thing that could have been included is how many of us are really only buying the head. I was fitted many years ago to a certain shaft, and that shaft works in every head I buy. I guess my fitting was probably dialed into a head/shaft combo, but in my experience, the shaft works with any head I install, so I’m basically only looking for improvements in head technology when I purchase a driver.

I think there is still some skip logic to be ironed out. No fitting/ bought without trying in #6 and “0” in #7 should exclude #8.

Also, #14 should have an “other” category.

Love the work, but this survey just didn’t seem up to par. Pun intended.

You’re choices for unsatisfied include a choice that says something like “your performance gains don’t justify the cost”. My main issue with my Ping G410+ is that it’s shorter than my old Ping G15. Gains? I wanted gains….I got a great driver that is wonderfully adjustable (and that’s useful) but I actually lost distance. Note sure why but I am tempted to go get fitted for a shaft…

This survey is always a great read, love how trying/fitting/buying drivers divides the golfing nations and trying them is so random. Got my F9 used having been fit for a F7 and just kept the shaft I had so it was an easy fit. My F9 is a beast, long, great sound, accurate, easy to hit and beautiful. For $140. No brainer man and don’t need to swap it for yonks yet. Cheers

Question 19 is flawed and will skew your data. “In what ways has your driver failed to live up to your expectations?” is a good question, but you are forced to choose a negative response. There isn’t an option for “N/A” or “My driver has met my expectations”. Because the question is mandatory, 100% of your respondents are forced to choose something negative about their driver which may not the case for some (myself included).
