“Ad” to Cart: The Best Golf Polo Ever?

Every day we’re bombarded with marketing. With the myriad voices pulling you in every direction, how can one be sure what is truth and what is not? At our core, MyGolfSpy serves the consumer. That means we have an obligation to inform you when a product lives up to the marketing hype. In the same vein, we also bear the duty of telling you to avoid a product that doesn’t deliver on its promises. Welcome to “Ad” to Cart, a new series where we test the gear that’s being plastered all over your social media feeds.

The Ad

For our first ever “Ad” to Cart article, I’m reviewing Mantra Golf Polos. The premise is simple: Is the Mantra Polo the best polo on the planet?

More succinctly, should you be spending your hard-earned cash on a polo from Mantra?

While my opinion is subjective to my personal preferences, I always strive to give my raw, honest feedback. My review of the Mantra Catalyst polo is no different.

My Thoughts

I’m considerably impressed with Mantra. There’s a lot to like. There are four key things I look for in a polo: a good structure (particularly around the collar) ample stretch, great fit and bonus features. These will be criteria on which I judge the Mantra Catalyst polo.

Structure

While the Mantra Catalyst polo has a “blade” style collar, it’s structured and holds its shape well. After a few washes, it still holds up well. I’m slightly concerned about the longevity but so far, so good. I’m impressed, Mantra. Even though I’m not typically a blade collar guy, I thought this polo looked really sharp. It’s worth noting that Mantra does offer a more traditional pointed collar.

Stretch

What was that second thing I mentioned every good polo should have? Stretch. Golf is a sport, after all, and your “uniform” should not hinder any of the athletic movements you make. There’s a reason runners where shorts with three-inch inseams and there’s a reason golf polos are stretchy.

The Mantra Catalyst polo is among the stretchiest polos I’ve ever worn. I didn’t exactly measure the stretch but rest assured the polyester-Spandex blend got the job done. I will say the material is quite thin so, when really stretched, it starts to become translucent. This worries me a little as to how it’ll hold up after repeated use and abuse.

Fit

The comfort of a polo largely stems from the fit. It should be neither too tight nor too loose. The fit should also be consistent across the board. A super-wide torso with tiny sleeves is a no-go.

By default, the Mantra Catalyst polo has more of an athletic fit. It’s tapered towards the bottom and the sleeves also feature a slight taper. I found the fit to be unrestrictive and a little flattering, even for someone like me who rocks the dad-bod.

Bonus Features

Yes, one of the criteria I use to judge polos is bonus features. The typical golf polo is too boring. Certainly someone can come up with something extra to make it more functional, right?

Mantra did exactly that. The Catalyst polo features a nifty sunglasses loop at the bottom of the collar. It’s a simple addition but one that’s functional without taking away from the overall style or aesthetic of the garment.

Another thing Mantra does really well is patterns. They have no shortage of whimsical patterns and fun designs but they’re all done tastefully. None is too obnoxious or bright. I really dig both the Humpback and Namib designs.

The Verdict

If I had to give the Mantra Catalyst polo a rating, I’d give it four stars out of five. It’s stretchy, fun and comfortable. I did notice a few loose threads and I have questions about how long the materials will last but, all in all, it’s a good polo for a decent price.

Is it the best polo on the planet? I don’t think so. Is it still plenty good and worth spending $88 on? Yes. If Mantra’s style speaks to you, I have no issues recommending their Catalyst polos.

Yecccch. No collar wouldn’t be permitted at my club. The really important feature of a polo, at least in AZ is breathability/wickability.

yikes, looks like a flea market 3 for $20 special…the collar is a total mess, the “color” on the sleeves looks like some kind of lace granny would add…no parts of it look like a $90 polo. if you want to wear something no one else has, there’s your shirt, cause u’ll never see another one.

This is a hard NO. I understand that quality clothes are more expensive these days, but I can barely justify $50-75 for a nice logo shirt from a great course on vacation. I’m definitely NOT paying $88 for a regular golf shirt that has no special meaning. When Wal-Mart has some pretty sweet Ben Hogan shirts, shorts, and pants for $20-30 each, NOBODY should be paying this much.

$88 for a polyester shirt. Great. The cheapest material possible. Just go to Walmart. You can buy 5 polyester shirts for that price. How did the golf industry convince players they should wear polyester?

The so called “collar” is a turn off to me and the two shirts pictured are ugly. Trim at the bottom of the sleeve? I don’t think so. Glad you liked it, but I wouldn’t invest in the company if I were you.

I don’t like the look. Pay $88? I wouldn’t wear this shirt if it were free. No thanks – straight to the Goodwill pile if I got it as a gift.

Come on, like that’s the only skin exposed when you play golf? 50 spf on your neck, problem solved. I don’t like the collar from a fashion standpoint personally.

I have a hard time seeing a collarless shirt as a polo. It may be a decent shirt but to me it’s not a polo.
