Next Big Putter Company?

I have to say I feel Adams is the best up and coming golf company in the business today. They have found a way to compete with the big boys…and they have done it with exceptional products. Unfortunately a lot of the amazing product they are making never actually makes it to retail…so many of you unfortunately never get to see it. And where the majority of golf companies only seem to be putting new paint jobs and worthless adjustable weights on drivers and putters Adams Golf actually is developing innovating golf products. They have one if not THE MOST talented R&D guys in the biz…his name is Tim Reid…and where Barney Adams might have put them on the map we feel Tim could possibly take Adams to the next level. And that next level is sitting directly parallel to companies like Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist and Ping.

Bad Rumor or Terrible Fact?

Which makes the latest rumor we have been hearing so disheartening…we have heard that they are considering selling out to Dick’s Sporting Goods. We know they (Adams) like many other golf companies were having some tough financial times..but we really hope this economy does not force them to have to resort to a “fire sale” just to stay in the business. There is a talented bunch of guys there and we feel like they are doing it the RIGHT way. So we really hope another investor comes swooping in or hopefully this rumor is just that. Although, we have now contacted 4 great sources of ours and they have all told us they have heard the same thing. We put calls in to the high-ups at Adams but got a no-comment response.

Adams Golf – Next To Enter The Putter Market

Even with this rumor looming…we are hearing that they are now seriously considering moving in to the putter market. From what we hear there are quite a few putter prototypes floating around the courses near Tim Reid’s local stomping grounds. And here is what we are hearing:

  • There will be at least 3-5 putters released
  • There will be a high-end milled line (Photos Below) and a lower-end value line to compete with Cleveland’s ($79 Putters)
  • There will be an 8802 Style, Mallet and a milled model with a very unique sole design
  • ($79) Putter line will have a yellow grip and yellow insert
  • Lower-end models will be released in the next month or 2 and the high-end line next year

Unique Sole Design

If you look at the 2nd image you will notice a ridge or hump located in between the weights on the sole. You can also see in the last image that the sole of the putter carries a unique shape due to the hump. From what we are hearing the unique sole design allows golfers to set down the putter any way you like and it will sit square. From what I see and others I have asked we all thought the opposite. It seems like this would cause a problem with people who tend to pull putts. And also for a golfer who likes to forward press…it would seem to catch easily and cause you to catch on the surface of the green too early. But we have yet to get one to test…but soon as we do we will be sure to let you know.

Tell us what you think….(let Adams Golf know what you think!)

I have putted with this putter ad what adams says is correct it sits square it just rolls that way no matter what and it also give most players that looks that the toe is up at address that we like but the real part of the putter that makes contact with the ball is sitting flush to the ground very solid putter and a nice butter feel cant wait to try other models keep it going adams they also have some sick tour only wedges 9039 protos!!! very nice

As far as I know Adams Golf is in a lot of trouble financially. They’ve already had two rounds of layoffs company wide. The R&D dept. has lost more than half of it’s talent. If there’s any say in a sell off it would be in the hands of the share holders not Chip Brewer or Tim Reed’s control. My bet is on Adams being bought up by another company for the technology in the hybrids and the employees being dumped.

Nice pics ;) (I took them) the putter feels awesome!! believe me when I say that I am always looking for an awesome milled Face/bodied putter and this one can be put up with the best of them. If adams decides to put this out trust me I will buy at least two, they are hands down awesome! no issues with the bump what so ever and I love looking down and adressing the ball with the putter at the proper lie angle versus many other golfers, ( I guess im crazy that way) rumor is that they are going to release a cast series putter, just hersay tell I hear solid word…

I love my Adams irons and hybrids, but can’t imagine why the golfers need another source of copycat putters.

What sources are you talking to?

Adams has never been interested in their stockholders pov. They have always been about building the best damn golf company they can. They have a rich investor in the Gregory family. Their balance sheet is solid thru 2Q ’09. If Barney and Chip decide to sell, it will be on their terms most likely. Plus, I doubt they’d sell to a big box given their mission to build a great golf company.

      Later,

Hey David…welcome to MGS! Hope you stick around and become part of the community here. In regards to the sources I could never give names. But I will say that our sources are extremely reliable. And it is not rumor that they have been having some financial issues..no different then almost every golf company right now. From what I have heard this would not be on their terms.

Sweet. I have always loved Adams and i think its about time that they come out with a putter. Maybe they should get together with bob bettinardi and have an Adams by Bettinardi line of putters.

Great!!!!! Another great putter with another great feature!!!! Cool as it might be I just can’t see it making a difference in the market over the long haul. Wish the best to this project for the fine Adams Company though.

Adams Golf is really a good company. Years ago they were known as the “old guys” company. I can tell you that in the past I would have never considered Adams for irons (ego) but today I have the Idea Tech A4 irons in the bag. They are sleek and great preformers. Eariy each season I always check out the new offerings (total club ho here) and decide which new irons I will buy for the year. At Golfsmith I put the A4’s side by side with TM, Cally, Nike, Mizuno and Titleist……….the A4’s were the hands down winner in look, feel, and got bagged.

I’ve never understood why players have the toe of the putter off the ground (including myself) it just makes the face point left. I’m sure unless the face of the putter is concave it will hurt your stroke from outside five feet or so. As to Adams their range of clubs is quite exstensive I’m sure some buyers get confused when a company offers so many combinations. IMO a comapny should have 3 to 4 sets of irons and a ‘players’ driver, fairway woods and hybrids and a similar set up of game improvement clubs but you have to give them credit for offering choice. It would be a shame for another company to sell especially after Tom Watson’s wonderful performance at the Open. As to the putter it looks good the colour reminds me of the Carbite goldy bronze finish from a few years back.

This is a mistake, diving into the putter market can be damn near fatal. Ask Mizuno. But if they must they have been better contracting a known designer.

Actually Kiwi the designer as far as we know is Tim Reid which was one of the designers for the 2-Ball.

the putter is basically a scotty cameron, i don’t see whats good about it, espicially the fact that the adams golf logo is ugly. it too plain and their logo is ugly, to sum up. i would definitley rather get the scotty cameron.

Finally someone agrees with me lol allthough scotty’s a true craftsman 80% of the time he just spiffs up pings designs and tripples the price. I would just buy a ping and save myself the money

I see nothing that would keep me from trying one and if I like the way it performs, I’d definately buy one.

That is why I love the putter industry more then any other. Anyone is willing to try a new flatstick, especially if it can cut even 1 stroke of their game.

Even Arnold Palmer has not found the perfect putter and he has more then 3000 in his collection.

Really liken the way the putter looks from every angle. I’m still not sure about the bump/hump on the bottom of it though. If it does what Adams says it does then I’m absolutely interested in buying one.

Yeah Spanky you don;t see much originality anymore in the putter market. Although we are seeing some cool stuff coming from a couple companies soon in regards to putters.

I agree with kiwi. There is nothing in this putter to differentiate it from the rest. The Adams equipment that is selling well all has some differentiator (hybrids, drivers, hybrid sets).

The small club company’s need something or a hook for someone to buy an Adams putter versus an Odyssey. I just do not see it

The sole is definitely a “differentiator” in my book Andy. Have you ever seen one like that previous to this model?
