But we weren’t going to let the test release come and go without giving you some of our top picks.

This year’s list looks a little different. We saw a lot of really high performing golf balls and trying to force them into one overall winner or a few broad categories didn’t tell the whole story. Instead, we broke the picks down by construction and then by flight and spin profile.

The goal is to give you a better starting point based on what you actually need from your golf ball.

One thing to keep in mind: high, mid and low are relative. Golf ball performance can also change depending on the club and swing speed. Use these picks as a starting point and then head back to the Golf Ball Selector to dig into your specific speed and performance needs.

Best Ionomer Golf Balls

Higher Flight: Titleist Tour Soft

The Titleist Tour Soft came closest to tour level full swing performance among the ionomer balls we tested. At our slow driver speed, it finished second for total distance while giving golfers the higher flight profile we were looking for in this category. The tradeoff is greenside spin, where Tour Soft can’t keep up with urethane. If you want height and distance from an ionomer ball, start here.

Mid Flight, Mid Spin: Srixon Q-Star Ultispeed

Q-Star Ultispeed gives us the middle ground in the ionomer category. It wasn’t the longest driver ball at every speed but its iron performance was strong, especially as speed increased. At our fastest 7-iron speed, it finished fourth for total distance. You’ll still give up greenside spin compared to urethane but, for golfers looking for a more neutral ionomer profile, Ultispeed makes sense.

Lower Flight, More Spin: TaylorMade SpeedSoft

SpeedSoft is the lower flight, higher spin option within this ionomer group. Its iron distance held up well across all three speeds and it gives golfers a different window than Tour Soft or Q-Star Ultispeed. Keep in mind that “more spin” is relative to this group. You’re still playing an ionomer golf ball so don’t expect tour ball levels of greenside spin.

Best Soft Urethane Golf Balls

Higher Flight, Low Spin: TaylorMade Tour Response

Tour Response continues to make a strong case for golfers who want softer feel without automatically giving up performance. It finished first for total 7-iron distance at both our slow and fast speeds and third for total driver distance at the fast speed. The profile here is higher flight with lower spin. If you want soft urethane and still care about distance, Tour Response is an easy one to look at.

Mid Flight, Mid Spin: Wilson Triad

Wilson Triad is the middle option in our soft urethane group. It doesn’t lean as hard toward the higher flight and lower spin of Tour Response or the lower flight profile of AVX. The reason to consider it is balance. You get a urethane cover, solid iron performance and useful short game spin without pushing too far toward one performance extreme.

Lower Flight, More Spin: Titleist AVX

AVX takes the lower flight, higher spin spot within this soft urethane category. Iron distance was a strength in our testing. It finished sixth for total 7-iron distance at both the slow and fast speeds. Golfers who like a softer urethane ball but don’t need the higher window of Tour Response should take a close look at AVX.

Best Tour Standard Golf Balls

Higher Flight: TaylorMade TP5

TP5 gets the higher flight spot in our tour standard group. It produced plenty of full wedge spin while giving golfers a higher window than Chrome Tour or Pro V1. If you want traditional tour ball performance but need some extra height rather than trying to flatten your trajectory, TP5 is the best fit among our tour standard picks.

Mid Flight, Mid Spin: Callaway Chrome Tour

Chrome Tour is about as close to the middle of the middle as we get here. It fills the mid-flight, mid-spin spot in the tour standard category without pushing too far toward an extreme. Full wedge spin also held up well when we added water. For golfers who want a premium urethane ball with a more neutral overall profile, Chrome Tour is an easy starting point.

Lower Flight, More Spin: Titleist Pro V1

Pro V1 is our lower flight, higher spin tour standard pick and it deserves special mention for slower swing speeds. At our slow driver speed, it finished first for total distance. It also retained almost all of its full wedge spin in wet conditions. If you want a flatter tour ball that still gives you plenty of scoring club spin, Pro V1 is the obvious place to start.

Best Tour X Golf Balls

Higher Flight: Titleist Pro V1x

Pro V1x is the higher flight choice in the Tour X category and one of the more complete performers we tested. At our fast driver speed, it finished fourth for total distance and its 35 yard wedge spin was near the very top of the test. If you want speed, height and short game spin in the same golf ball, the Pro V1x profile makes a lot of sense.

Mid Flight, Mid Spin: Callaway Chrome Tour X

Chrome Tour X takes the mid flight, mid spin spot in our Tour X group. It was one of the faster driver balls in the test and it led the 35 yard wedge test with 5,992 rpm of spin. That’s a useful combination for golfers who don’t necessarily need the highest flight but still want speed off the tee and plenty of spin when the shots get shorter.

Lower Flight, More Spin: Bridgestone TOUR B X

TOUR B X is the lower flight, higher spin choice in the Tour X category. It was also one of the longer balls at our fast driver speed and retained almost all of its full wedge spin when wet. If your priority is keeping flight down without giving up speed or control, this was one of the more interesting combinations we saw.

Best Distance Urethane Golf Balls

Higher Flight: Maxfli Tour X LS

Maxfli Tour X LS is the higher flight option in the distance urethane category. At our fast driver speed, it produced 322.4 yards of total distance and still generated 5,693 rpm on the 35 yard wedge shot. That’s the appeal. It’s built around speed and distance but still has enough short game spin to keep it from feeling like a one dimensional distance ball.

Mid Flight, Mid Spin: Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash

Pro V1x Left Dash gives us the mid flight, mid spin profile in this distance focused group. At our fast driver speed, it reached 326.4 yards of total distance while producing less 35 yard wedge spin than the standard Pro V1x. For golfers who want firm, fast and long without moving into the highest flight or spin profile, Left Dash remains a logical fit.

What About Lower Flight and Lower Spin?

We don’t have a winner here. There were some interesting numbers in that part of the test but not a ball we felt good enough about to put on this list. We’d rather leave the spot empty than force a winner just because the category exists.

Best Value Golf Balls

Budget Pick: Kirkland Performance+

Kirkland Performance+ remains our budget choice because finding a urethane golf ball at this type of price is still difficult. There are tradeoffs and even the white and yellow versions didn’t behave exactly the same in our testing. Still, if you lose enough golf balls that premium pricing is hard to justify but you don’t want to give up a urethane cover, Kirkland remains one of the first places to look.

Mid Tier Pick: Maxfli Tour

Maxfli Tour is the step up if you have a little more room in the budget. It isn’t here because one number blew away the field. It’s here because the performance is complete. It produced strong full wedge spin and retained nearly all of it when wet while still giving you tour style urethane construction at a mid tier price. This is value without feeling like a major compromise.

Best Golf Balls Beyond The Big Names

Maxfli Tour S

Maxfli Tour S deserves a look if you want to go outside the names that dominate most golf ball conversations. It finished inside the top 10 for total distance at our slow driver speed and was also near the top for 7 iron distance at the mid and fast speeds. Add in a urethane cover and solid wedge spin and there’s a lot to like here.

Wilson Staff Model X

Staff Model X may be the biggest performance story in this section. It finished second for total driver distance at our mid speed and fifth at our fast speed, reaching 327 yards of total distance. It also retained nearly all of its full wedge spin when wet. If speed and distance are high on your list and you don’t mind a firmer golf ball, don’t overlook this one.

Tour Edge Exotics

Tour Edge probably isn’t the first brand most golfers think of when shopping for a golf ball but Exotics gave us plenty of reasons to pay attention. It finished sixth for total driver distance at our slow speed and 12th at our fast speed. It also finished eighth for fast speed 7-iron distance. This isn’t just an interesting golf ball from an unexpected brand. The performance backs it up.

These picks are meant to make the 2026 test data a little easier to use, not replace it. Start with the type of ball you want to play and then decide what you need from flight and spin.

There are a lot of really good golf balls in the 2026 test. The best one for you isn’t necessarily the ball sitting at the top of one distance or spin chart. It’s the one that gives you the flight, spin and distance combination that works throughout your bag.
