Bryson’s Manufactured Image Continues To Splinter

Last week, when Bryson DeChambeau went on Katie Miller’s podcast to talk about a wide range of topics, a couple of his quotes went viral.

There was one about him not believing the moon landing footage (honestly, I’m surprised he even thinks we went to the moon in the first place).

But the one that hit even more was how he is wrestling with his future in golf.

“I’m in that weird space right now, I don’t know what to do, either content creation or professional golf. I don’t know what to do right now.”

Imagine trying to explain this to Ben Hogan. Hell, imagine trying to explain this to Ben Griffin …

We’ve seen this evolution of Bryson as a golf figure. He started as the nerdy mad scientist with the single-length clubs, side-saddle putting and a weird hat. He beefed up and chased distance. He went to LIV and started a bustling YouTube channel, carefully curating his image and getting a PR glow up.

Golf fans started out as curious because he was doing things differently; then they thought he was obnoxious/not self-aware for doing things like berating sponsors, asking for a second opinion for bizarre rules questions and shooting 15-minute videos of himself frying bacon shirtless during the pandemic; then they thought he was a man of the people for putting such concerted efforts into content creation.

From cool to uncool to cool. From popular to vilified to popular.

Polarizing, captivating, or both … depending on whom you ask.

But based on the temperature reading I’m getting talking to friends and reading reactions online, the overwhelming emotion currently is that people are just tired of Bryson’s shtick.

And the quote I mentioned at the top of this story kind of sums it all up. The guy has won two majors, is a top-10 player in the world and still doesn’t know if he even wants to play professional golf anymore, a possibility he has been teasing throughout the year like he is doing a promo for a reality show.

Two things can be true at the same time:

  • Bryson is a fascinating character and great to have in the game of golf because he provides a wildly different perspective and is willing to let fans in with content creation. He’s an awesome player and is always causing headlines, a positive given how bland pro golf can be. He is one of the few guys who truly moves the needle in our game.
  • Bryson is also exhausting. He feels a lot like clicking the “For You” section on Twitter which might be Dante’s ninth circle of hell. There is always an angle, a scheme, a dumb quote, a new TikTok or a hole-in-one challenge over his house. He’s the Nickelodeon golfer.

I want to take you back to the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, in the heat of the aforementioned glow up for Bryson’s image.

Back on the PGA Tour, DeChambeau was getting “Brooksy” chirps, taking three minutes to hit shots and blaming his equipment at every turn. His reputation in and out of the public eye was pretty sour.

Then he went to LIV. Golf fans started to only see him contending at the majors—and on YouTube, where he invested more resources than any top professional golfer. That investment provided a ton of goodwill. Even some of his haters turned into fans.

By that PGA Championship, I wrote a column titled “Admit It—You’re Becoming A Bryson Fan.” Here is an excerpt from that story.

“Bryson had became something of a pariah on the PGA Tour, and it was a well-earned distinction. He repeatedly proved his selfishness and lack of self-awareness, whether it was unfairly blaming manufacturers, calling Augusta National a par-67 or giving nonsensical lessons in pseudo physics.

Fans may have respected his willingness to think about golf in a unique way, but the respect didn’t go much further than that. He came across as an immature know-it-all who was a serious golfer but not a person to take seriously.

Well, Bryson haters among us, it’s time to admit he’s become a lot more palatable in the past year or so...

As someone who spent ample time griping about Bryson (or just flat-out making fun of him), I think it’s undeniable that the game is significantly more interesting when he is involved.

On Sunday at the PGA Championship, the fans were firmly in his corner. On-site reports were unanimous—the crowd wanted him to win more than eventual champion Xander Schauffele.

And why wouldn’t they? Bryson is one of the only players of this generation who genuinely seems to care about the fan experience. He offers visceral reactions after key shots, showing how badly he wants to win. He is tossing golf balls to kids and making sure that shameless adults aren’t running off with the souvenir. He is creating content online that a younger audience identifies with in a real way.

He realizes there is more to golf than playing it well and picking up a paycheck. He has invested in that.”

I don’t regret saying any of that because that’s how I felt at the time. I still appreciate Bryson’s showmanship and emphasis on the fans although we’ve been seeing less of it given his recent ejections from majors.

What I will say is that, ultimately, there is something of a shelf life for a guy like Bryson.

He’s someone who comes off as calculated, not genuine. Bryson feels like a know-it-all algorithm trying to twist and turn himself into being beloved. He thinks about what other people want to see him do in order to be popular (which, to be fair, can be extremely effective in the year of our Lord, 2026).

You can’t pull off that trick forever. You are eventually going to wear on a lot of people.

When fans see you hit a bunker shot too long and then complain about the lack of rough after your terrible shot, it’s another reminder that the edited version of Bryson is a lot different than the raw one.

Those reminders have been popping up recently (that he continues to venture into politics—he refused to do media at the PGA Championship but spilled his heart on a right-wing podcast—adds to his divisiveness).

If he goes off on his own with YouTube and doesn’t dedicate himself to play competitive golf, a lot of people are going to rightfully criticize him for putting his brand ahead of his legacy.

He has always been a polarizing figure but it seems public sentiment is turning more negative than it has been in a long time.

Maybe not so much from love to hate … but from intrigue to exhaustion.

What are your thoughts on Bryson? Let me know below in the comments.

Exhaustion is maybe the right word. It’s kind of like talking about the PGA Tour money list. It’s gotten so out of touch with reality, that it’s become boring, nauseating, and something I just don’t give a damn about anymore. For me, that describes Bryson perfectly. I’ve had enough.

Theses comments sound like a bunch of butthurt frat boys who blindly follow the PGA Tour frat boys. Until LIV, the pga claimed they were very player friendly and paid the maximum they could pay. Then suddenly, after LIV outted them, they magically found hundreds of millions to match LIV payouts with LIV-like events that have no cut payouts (for the popular frat boys only) and then got new leadership. But yea, they were player friendly. And yet their coddled little stars still skip the premium events and most only play the minimum amount of events. I have no respect for any of them. Nor the tour. I don’t blame Bryson for questioning going back to that mess. A bunch of boring twinks who wear size 23 waist cullottes and ankle pants. Boring tv coverage. Boring stupid crowd filled with… you know this one, c’mon just shout it out…. yes!…stupid frat boys all yelling something incredibly ignorant on every shot. No thanks, I’d rather watch QVC. All of that isn’t my “demographic”. Oh yea, when does your hero Eldrick get out of this latest round of rehab? (in Zurich no less). What’s the tally so far? 2 DUI’s, luckily they didn’t test him for a 3rd in LA when he brilliantly drove off a canyon at 85mph in a 35 zone, a 9 iron upside his head for cheating on his wife, spitting on greens, throwing clubs, cussing on TV, blatantly cheating at the masters, another rehab for supposed sex addiction… and yet he’s the hero to these morons. Never saw the real greats do any of that. You can keep the pga tour.

People love to hate him because he has more skill than they’ll ever have, and has casually done more with it than they ever could and while they struggle to break 90, he can realistically contemplate making more money then they ever will by not using it… people want athletes with his talent to have the dedication and commitment of a Bryant or Jordan and expect that they at least have the commitment of a McGrady if for no other reason than the money… the new era of personalities making millions without the pressure of making the cut is an easy road, and people always enviously resent those on the easy road.

Not all criticism is due to envy, bud.

He gets annoying. He’s sort of a cornball. He seems immature and to be a whiner a lot of the time. For someone who obsesses over their equipment, he sure blames his equipment a lot when he underperforms.

And takes money from whomever will write him a check. LIV, gambling sites, energy drinks.

He’s the golf equivalent of Ivo Karlovic.

I signed off on Bryson long before LIV. At the Memorial in one weekend he blamed a cameraman for him chunking a chip shot. I wonder if it was the same cameraman that caused him to take three to get out of the bunker on 18 and miss the cut at the Masters. Then in the same event he argued with a TOUR official on how to judge if a ball was OB. He is a self absorbed narcissist. I have never missed him on TOUR.

I liked Bryson when he was a college golfer. Anyone who directly clashed with as corrupt and inconsistent organization as the NCAA gets sympathy in my book.

When he first came out I liked that he was doing things differently, yet had made it to the highest level. I then watched some of his content (produced by others) and didn’t seem to like him as a person.

I didn’t like his game as much post bulk up and thought his actual golf game moved backwards. I didn’t like it when he moved to LIV. I don’t watch his content and have no plans to. I don’t really care what he thinks politically (whatever that actually is) — any more or less than any other professional golfer.

I’m fine if Bryson and the PGA Tour make amends and he’s at the top of the leaderboard every week. I’m also fine if he never makes another cut on the PGA Tour. Just let the golf speak for itself. If it is not there, then I don’t want him representing the USA in international competition ever again. If the golf is there and he can be an additive member to a winning team, then so be it. The Captains can make that decision.

Articles like this give him air space. If you’re really tired of him, just stop posting them. That’s what any egomaniac cannot stand — irrelevance.

The people who say things like this are usually the ones who think their political opponents should be sent to “reeducation” camps. I.e. you’re projecting.

The continual refrain of him being good for golf is tired. He missed the cut at the PGA and the tournament was epic in every regard. He missed the cut at the US Open last year and the tournament was amazing. Not sure why it’s better with him versus any other player? This YouTube thing has a shelf life and it feels like it’s starting to sour. Please, go be a content creator and let the professionals take it from here.

I met bryson a few times down at the pga show. He gave a clinic for a bunch of cobra/puma vip’s. In the question and answer part, people were asking him about one length and he basically said, you don’t have an engineering degree so why should I listen to you. He was a total jerk, both times, then I can only imagine he hired a great p.r. firm and just like Phil, when the camera is on, he is mr. nice guy. Turn it off or when things arent going his way, he is who many of us thought he was.

That’s one of the things I find most annoying about Bryson. He acts like he is some genius who figured out equipment secrets that nobody else knows about – when in reality like a lot of golf equipment trends, they’re not new, and if they were so groundbreaking other players would be adopting those same set-ups. Does any other competitive golfer use one length irons/wedges? I bet Cobra won’t even sell them anymore after the King Tec X’s are obsoleted.

That with all of constant blaming of equipment for his faults and changing up clubs all the time. Like I’m going to design my own irons because I know more than the people who have been doing it for 50+ years… and then play terrible with them and switch out again.

Wow, what an extraordinarily personal and unnecessary attack on a multi tour and major winner.

It’s his career, he can do what he likes with it and probably makes 10 x what you do from youtube. Would make sense to follow that instead of going back to being a touring pro.

The fact you managed to politicize it turns me off even more.

This has always been my issue with him. He is not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. Anyone that talks about how intelligent they are is immediately telling everyone that they aren’t intelligent.

With that said, I do enjoy his YouTube videos. Mainly because there are some interesting conversations about the thought processes the players have as they go about a round.

He seems very defensive and fragile. I know that golf is different, it’s an individual sport, and having a “bad day at work” for them means having to talk about it at length. I imagine that is very unpleasant. At the same time, he just carries himself as superior, and no accountability or ownership. It’s always someone else’s fault.

The interesting thing here is, Bryson doesn’t have an engineering degree either. From my understanding, he has a BA in physics not a BS and that is not an engineering degree. I have no doubt he is smart just not as smart as he thinks he and everyone else is supposed to believe he is.

You are absolutely right about how he is with the cameras on and off.

When I did a quick internet search, it said BD has a bachelor’s degree in physics. It did not specify whether it was a BA or BS. Those would be a distinction without a difference. I never took an engineering course, but I took Physics 101 and 102 (easy) and physical biochemistry (much harder, lots of Einstein-Stokes equations). I also took about 15 chemistry courses. I am sure anyone who could get a physics degree could also get an engineering degree with about the same grades.
In BD’s defense, many people are nicer on camera than off.

I wish the tournament setup committee’s would punish these spoiled brats with narrow fairways, thick 1980’s U.S. Open rough and ridiculous pin placements.

This happens with the overexposure of any person. Their 15 minutes runs out because they show too much of their personality, politics, or product. I think Breaking 50 is a fun idea, but it’s only fun for so long. I don’t always agree with the author, but the phrase “Nickelodeon golfer” is perfect.

only problem with Bryson is his golf game has been weak. if he is contending on the final day of majors instead of just trying to make the cut, all of us would have a lot more affection for him. when you’re winning, people will look at you and say that’s just how he is.

oh Tiger got another DUI? haha that’s just Tiger being Tiger.

It’s not just Bryson although I agree with what you have written. It’s golf across the board. For years there have been too many tournaments, too much “grow the game” talk, too much “get more distance” with whatever product, COVID boom and the LIV drama for the past few years. How has the average, avid Joe Golfer benefitted from any of this? Higher green fees? Crazy expensive gear? Ridiculous behavior at professional golf events and on local courses? It’s not just Bryson.
