Callaway Launches Golf Lives Series

Callaway has just released the first docu-short in its new Golf Lives series. Phonetically, that’s livs, not l-eye-vs, though either would work in this context, I suppose.

The film features Brad Jordan, who rap aficionados likely know better as Scarface. Callaway is billing Jordan as one of the most influential MCs of all-time – and if even if the name isn’t ringing bells, I’m all but certain you’re familiar with his music.

In addition to being an icon in the music world, Jordan is also a passionate golfer who, we’re told, works on his game almost daily and plays over 300 rounds a year. I’d say that qualifies as avid.

The short film chronicles Jordan’s thoughts on the game of golf as well as his experience getting fitted for, and playing with his new Callaway clubs.

At some point, we’ll probably have a conversation about where this latest foray into the world of non-traditional golf media ventures fits within the larger Callaway strategy, but for now, I’m going to shut up and let you watch the show.

I’m desperately curious to hear your thoughts on the film itself, as well as how it makes you think, or perhaps more to the point, think differently about Callaway Golf.

For those of you who are easily put off by words that start with ‘F’ and rhyme with duck, might I suggest the censored version?

Seeing as the whole “grow the game” thing is the focus of the media/industry, pretty sure this guy would(might) appeal to people who aren’t normally into golf. Clearly targeting a different audience.

Sports loose when we try to make them more appealing to people who could care less while forgetting the heart and soul.

Love it. Open, easy to relate to. Golf is exactly as Brad describes. Maybe not your cup but certainly fires me up. I’m 69 going on 19…picked up a JC Higgins club at 11. Love, absolutely adore the game. Thanks for the adrenaline Brad and thanks Callaway for bringing diversity and passion into the game. Excuse me while I go stroke my new jewelry. Steelheads just arrived two days ago, gotta go polish em’ , crisp, real crisp!, workable, f…… The bomb! Peace out!!

Just out of curiosity, do you commonly use such profanities on the golf course?

I would have liked to see the process of him being fitted for his clubs, but it didn’t take me long to tire of his unnecessary profanities. And exactly how does this benefit Callaway?

I am surprised no one has commented yet – I grew up listening to all types of music, including gangsta rap. No doubt the music Brad put forth is graphic, violent, and offensive to many. I would say, however, that it is very well thought out, often calling on societal/cultural/political problems and differences, and that most all of it is musically brilliant, whether it’s your cup of tea or not. I was sure choosing Scarface as a subject would raise protests from some in our ranks, while leaving others encouraged by this inclusion. That Brad is now an avid golfer may be a surprise to many, but maybe it shouldn’t be – in the game of golf one thinks his or her way around the course, weighing many different factors – the wind, the lie, the turf, the odds(!) et al., much the same as a composer would layer and adjust musical passages or a lyricist would find rhyme, inflection and emphasis challenging to harness into a cohesive verse. I see the brilliance in so many, from such varied walks of life finding our game enthralling, in so many can finding solace here.
