Can Golf Keep Your Mind Sharp As You Age? This New Study Says Yes (With A Catch)

You don’t have to give me another reason to keep playing golf as I get older. I’m pretty well covered on that front. But I stumbled across a new study from researchers at Japan’s National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology that I thought was worth sharing. The data is a little more interesting than the usual “golf is good for you” headline.

The study

Researchers in Japan tracked 4,575 adults over 65 and split them into three groups: 509 who were still actively playing golf, 571 who used to play but had stopped and 3,495 who had never played at all. Everyone took a battery of cognitive tests covering memory, attention, executive function and processing speed.

Golfers who kept playing had a real edge

The golfers who were still playing had 39 percent lower odds of showing cognitive decline compared to the group that never played. But the golfers who had quit did not show that same benefit. Once they stopped, the protective association basically disappeared.

Years on the course matter more than rounds played

The part that surprised me most was what did not matter.

How many rounds a year someone played had no measurable connection to cognitive status. Neither did how often they practiced. What did matter was how long someone had been playing golf. Years of golf history tracked with lower odds of decline even when frequency did not.

So this is not a “play more golf and you’ll think better” study. It is closer to a “sticking with it matters more than how often you tee it up” study. The biggest gains showed up in memory and executive function, the two areas researchers say tend to slip first as we age.

For me, this is another reason to get started in the game as a young person and keep with it as you age.

The honest caveat

This is a cross-sectional study, meaning it captured everyone at a single point in time rather than following them for years. That means we cannot say definitively that golf causes sharper cognitive function. It is just as plausible that people whose minds are already staying sharp are the ones who keep playing into their 70s and 80s while those already experiencing decline are more likely to quit.

Either way, if you have been on the fence about picking golf back up or starting later in life, this is a decent nudge.
