Everyone Asks Me Which Golf Shoes To Buy. Here’s What I Tell Them.

I’ve got a problem.

Well, it’s a good problem to have. All of the golfer s in my life (and some that aren’t even in my life) love to ask me for advice.

I get it. I work for MyGolfSpy.

But with this great burden comes great responsibility. I owe it to you (and them) to provide good advice. What I say can make or break someone’s next round of golf. That’s kind of scary.

When I get asked, “Which golf shoes should I buy?”, I always make sure to answer carefully. After testing well over 125 pairs of golf shoes in the past three years or so, here’s what I find myself recommending most often to my friends, family and other golfers who reach out for help.

My No. 1 recommendation

I try to stay away from making generalizations. It’s hard to narrow down one shoe that’s best for “most” people. But, in my experience, the adidas TOUR360 is as close as it gets. It’s the perfect combination of stability, comfort, traction and premium materials.

There are few, if any (unless you absolutely just hate spiked shoes), I don’t recommend to try these. If you’re looking for similar performance with a lower price tag, the Under Armour Drive Pro is up there.

If comfort is your top priority …

Often, golfers come to me only looking for a shoe that’s great for walking. Sure, you still need some semblance of stability and traction is definitely nice. But, if comfort is your top consideration, two pairs that come to mind.

The PUMA ELECTROCAT NITRO is the one I tend to recommend the most in this regard. The traction is fine, the stability is decent … but, man, is it comfortable.

Another sleeper pick is the Under Armour Phantom. I haven’t tried the new version yet (TBD) but it’s another solid choice is the only thing you care about is comfort.

If you want to show love to the “little” guys

Often, some of the smaller brands do some of the best work. Often overlooked in favor of the FJ’s of the world, small brands like PAYNTR can flat-out ball. If there’s one pair you haven’t heard of that you absolutely should try, it’s the Eighty-Seven SC from PAYNTR.

This Jason Day signature shoe is one of my favorite spiked shoes of the year for good reason. It’s packed to the brim with tech and designed to help you perform your best.

If you need something stable (or are coming back from injury)

I don’t get this one often but on occasion there’s someone looking for premier stability, often because they’re nursing an injury to a lower extremity or they just produce more torque and power than the average golfer.

There are two standout performers in this category. The Sun Day Red Pioneer Cyprus is a good place to start. If you want something more sporty, you can go with the FootJoy Pro/SLX (or even Hyperflex).

And, finally, if you’re balling on a budget

THe CodeChaos 22 is one of the best waterproof golf shoes

Perhaps the question I get asked most often is, “What’s the best budget golf shoe I can buy?”

Check out our Best Golf Shoe buyer’s guides and then find some of the past season stuff that’s on sale. Something like the PUMA ALPHACAT NITRO or the adidas CODECHAOS 22 will suffice.

Tips and tricks

  • Whenever possible, try on before you buy.
  • Compare prices to ensure you’re getting the best possible deal
  • Don’t be afraid to shop used. eBay is a great resource. I recommend trying on a pair in store, then seeing if you can source a gently used pair online.
  • Set a realistic budget.

I will never buy anything from adidas. I had a pair of tour 360 and zig21. Felt good, solid support. I alternated them. Under 15 rounds on each they each developed holes inside heel. Adidas wouldn’t warranty due to them being bought >6mo ago .

Also regret buying adidas. Both shoes ripped on top of big toe area. Met a golfer on the course with same model of adidas and exact same defect. Contacted adidas and they refused to do anything as they out of warranty.

I respectfully disagree with the Adidas Codechaos recommendation. Bought these and within 2 rounds the inside opf the heal ripped on both shoes and gave me massive blisters. To make matters worse Adidas didn’t warranty them. Have bought many products before but will never buy Adidas again because of their poor customer service.

Terrible picks both for or against. You have test over a hundred shoes ? This is what you recommend. You need to go into another direction of apparel.

I have narrow feet with high arches and need that arch support to avoid plantar. I used to wear Footjoys exclusively but now my favorites are New Balance.

Because our collective feet vary so much in shape, any & all shoe reviews should have a little two line descriptor such as…
      > Works for []Narrow [] Medium [] Wide
      > Works for [] Low [] Medium [] High Arches

Without this, I tend to ignore shoe reviews cuz I don’t know if they’ll even fit my foot.

I have gone to New Balance the last few years they are easily available in wide widths. Skechers seem comfortable but I only see medium and extra wide in the stores which are not wide enough and to wide. At least for me, the biggest problem I have with most brands is the toe box is narrow. Lately I’ve dropped the golf shoes and switched to my New Balance trail running shoes. They’re comfortable to walk in and I haven’t had any traction problems.

I agree with Chris about Footjoy and New Balance being good for wide feet. I recently tried Skechers and so far they seem very good also. My pet peeve about shoes is color. Why is white the dominate color? They get dirty quickly and look terrible. I would like to see a nice black or brown color.

Because black or dark golf shoes are murder on your feet on hot and sunny days. Don’t ever buy golf shoes which are dark in color.

Bought new shoes yesterday. I have a narrow foot, and Adidas are still too narrow for me. The outside toe area on the Tour360s felt cramped walking around GolfGalaxy so I ended up with the FJ Hyperflex Carbons that are on sale right now for $100. If that’s not an issue for you, I can’t blame you putting these as your top pick, Connor.

Have to agree on FootJoy for hard to fit shoes. That are the very best at fitting everyone. The can custom fit even if one foot is larger than the other thru their MyJoys. I have been a customer of FootJoy since 1985 and always out of the box for a perfect fit and on the course for 18 holes. Awesome customer service and R&D. Stylish over the years to match any outfit, classic to athletic look. The number one shoe in my mind. I order direct and know they will fit, because I was fitted for them corrected on my first pair.

I walk 50+ rounds a year, and I have tried a lot of shoes / brands. Your budget choice the Adidas Code Chaos may be my all time favorite. Super comfortable and holds up really well to the elements. I play a lot of early morning rounds in the dew, and don’t shy away from an occaisional rainy day… I have never had an issue with Moisture. Good looking shoe with great performance at an amazing price… give them a shot!

I would be very cautious with used shoes. Leather shoes will stretch/conform to the user’s foot shape, and might not be comfortable for next wearer – unless they are almost new. The issue is much less for textile construction. I do second other opinions – I have a couple pairs of Adidas CodeChaos and they are terrific and can sometimes be found for $75 or less. UnderArmours are also super comfortable.

Unfortunately, for someone with exceptionally wide feet like myself, none of these shoes would probably work. Footjoy and New Balance are generally my only option for extra wide widths.
