First Look – Cobra King Utility Iron

A couple weeks ago we showed you the PING Crossover, which as you may recall, is most definitely not a driving iron.

Also not a driving iron is the new King Utility iron we just found inside Cobra’s demo day booth.

The big selling point for the King is that it’s the first adjustable hollow body utility iron. It offers lofts from 18-21 degree in a single club.

As most of you are aware, loft changes don’t exist in a vacuum, so it’s important to note that as loft increases the lie angle becomes more upright.

Available 5/1, retail price for the KING Utility will be $199 steel, $219 graphite.

I wonder if you would be able to bend the hosel to a lower loft without destroying the hosel itself. I know it sounds dumb to try that but so does an adjustable iron itself, you cant actually change the loft of a club without bending the hosel. I don’t like the look of the club though, to chunky. Maybe its the pictures but I don’t like it, I have never loved driving irons in the first place except for the 712 U.

      I love long irons (I have 16, 17 and 18 degree)…

      …a 14-17 would perfectly suit my preference…
…and I will give the 18-21 a try – just for fun and out of curiosity.

      Adjustability is always a compromise…
…a compromise that works really well, if you look at Driver, Fairway woods etc.

Looks a bit clunky, much like the old early Callaway X series but with the adjustability of a modern wood. Interesting.

slightly funky, being an adjustable iron head, especially with that gigantic hole for the screw, but hey, if it plays, it play.
I have a feeling i’m going to be VERY unproductive at work today with the PGA demo day. Thanks so much guys!
