adidas, Malbon Team Up For “Crosby Clambake” Collection

The intersection between golf, fashion and pop culture just keeps getting blurrier. Don’t believe me? Just check out the new adidas x Malbon Crosby Collection.

Inspired by famous entertainer Bing Crosby and his legendary “Clambake” tournament on California’s Monterey Peninsula, the collection features styles, designs and other odes to the 1930s and 1940s.

About the Crosby Clambake

I’ll give it to you straight. I was born in 1998. As such, my golf history knowledge isn’t quite up to snuff. However, after some research, I discovered these “Clambakes” were officially known as the Bing Crosby National Pro-Amateur. After his death in 1977, his family hosted the event for eight years. In 1986, AT&T took over sponsorship and renamed it the AT&T Pro-Am.

The event started as a way for Crosby to play golf with Hollywood buddies and other famous folk. Crosby himself put up the $500 prize money for the first Clambake in 1937, won by Sam Snead.

It’s the camaraderie, spirit and fashion of this era (and events) that inspired the adidas x Malbon Crosby Collection.

A Memorable Motif

I tend to overuse the phrase “what’s old is new again” but the fact of the matter is the adidas x Malbon Crosby Collection is a step back to the fashion of the 1930s. I’m talking wide sleeves, cardigans and even pleats.

“We wanted to create pieces based on the rich catalog that golf fashion gave us in the ’30s and
’40s along with what we saw in old photographs from Bing’s famous Clambakes,” said Dylan Moore, Creative Director, adidas Golf. “The entire collection is an ode to what golf and fashion became at that time in history but also celebrates how those same characteristics and fashion styles from that time still live on with golfers today.”

What Moore calls an “ode” is more of what I would call a “motif.” In music, a motif is a “a brief melodic or rhythmic formula out of which longer passages are developed.”

If baggy fits and argyle patterns are the motif, then the same can be seen throughout the collection in some form or another.

Each piece comes together beautifully to create a symphony of golf fashion that ultimately captures a classic era of golf.

Availability

The Crosby Collection from adidas and Malbon features pieces for men and women. Throw in two special shoes (the MC87 and Stan Smith Golf) and a host of accessories and you’ve got yourself an orchestra of products.

As a fat old white guy, not sure that this is my style. Then again, Twenty something year olds dressing like fat old white guys is probably odd too.

You do you gang. Not my place to judge

Interesting article, but I love to know who is paying the prices for all the clothes I see in these MGS stories? $65 for a hat? Yeah, yeah, I’m sure I’ll hear the complaints that just because I won’t blow money on that someone will.

Here’s a novel thought, how about MGS doing full review on every club & every ball that comes out in 2024. Every brand. Every model. Then after reading all that, maybe I’ll be interested in fluff like this.

Malbon is the most overrated apparel company in the country. I’m not exactly sure who is behind them, but they’re sure doing a great job of trying to convince everybody that they need to buy their stuff

getting ahead of the golf ball rollback… you too can hit the ball 200 yards like they did in the 20’s. and look 100 years old doing it.
