Toulon Golf Texas Small Batch Putter
  • The new Toulon Golf Small Batch putters honor Texan golf legends.
  • The sole of the putter has “puzzle” symbols representing the honored Texans.
  • Available March 14 at ToulonGolf.com with a MSRP of $1,800.

Last month, Toulon Golf released their 2024 First Run putters. That line features enough chocolaty mallet and blade goodies to keep even the most gluttonous golfer putter-sated for a while.

Personally, I am finding my First Run Madison delicious. At some point, we will chat about its Diamana P105 putter shaft. Icing on the cake.

For some putter companies, the completion of such a significant putter line launch would justify taking a bit of a break. Not Team Toulon. If we know anything about Sean Toulon, we know he is bad at retiring and committed to producing interesting limited-edition putters.

Don’t for a second think that just because Toulon launched a whole line of putters in February does not mean they will not be rolling out a new Small Batch putter in March.

Toulon Golf Small Batch Texas

Previous Small Batch models were all named after cities. This time, Toulon expanded the scope of their naming to the whole state of Texas.

Honestly, that seems like an on-brand thing since we all know that everything is bigger in Texas.

Regardless, Toulon Golf Small Batch putters typically honor a special golf destination or an influential golfer’s birthplace. For example, last month’s Latrobe Small Batch putter commemorated Arnold Palmer’s hometown.

Texas has produced a lot of legendary golfers. So many that if Toulon went city by city honoring them, we could be looking at Small Batch putters named after Texas cities for the next few seasons or even decades.

As such, honoring the state rather than the cities is a good plan.

The Texas golfers Toulon Golf is honoring? We will “puzzle” over that in a bit.

(That was foreshadowing.)

Toulon Golf Texas Small Batch: “Danny saw me naked!”

Toulon Golf Small Batch Texas

Even in this modern age, nudity is still considered unseemly in golf. However, could naked golf be on the horizon? Don’t dismiss the idea as impossible. It was just a few short years ago when music blasting on the course would have also seemed impossible.

Balls and dimples could mean something completely different when you go to the first tee in 2035.

In that light, the Toulon Golf Small Batch Texas is a trendsetter. This blade is naked already. At address, you’ll see nothing but the sinuous bend of its plumber’s neck, its ample, yet inviting, cavity and the smooth undulations of its bumpers.

You’ll not find any distracting (tan) lines on this nudist.

The Tuna milling on the face is visually delightful. Intended or not, whenever I see this milling pattern I think of Byron Morgan. Cheers to The Dude. You are missed.

Toulon Golf Texas Small Batch: The Fancy Metal

Toulon Design Small Batch Texas

Pop quiz!

I’ve got a couple of materials science questions for you. Please keep track of your score and don’t look at your neighbor’s paper.

  • What kind of metal is the Toulon Golf Small Batch Texas made from?
  • What luxury status symbol is also made of this same metal?

Did you answer “904L stainless steel” and “Rolex watches”? If you’ve been following the other Small Batch releases, these were easy questions. Toulon Golf uses this steel for their Small Batch putters because it has better environmental durability than typical 303 stainless steel.

It’s also a solid marketing ploy for a high-end limited-edition putter to be made from the same steel that is used to make watches that cost as much as my car, if not my house.

Toulon Golf Texas Small Batch: The Texas Puzzle

Toulon Golf Small Batch Texas

With the Texas, Toulon Golf has produced a putter with a puzzle. Rather than just telling you outright the six Texan golfers that they are honoring, they added a symbol representing each to the bottom of the putter.

I’m not going to spoil the puzzle but I have some clues for you if you get stuck.

  • The first icon is a hawk, honoring the man widely regarded as golf’s greatest ball striker.
  • The second icon, a crown, represents one of golf’s greatest gentlemen, known affectionately as “The Lord.”
  • The Red Book is the only painted icon. If you don’t know this one, I’d argue you are doing golf all wrong.
  • The fourth icon is there for the irreverent Texan who put a rubber snake in a competitor’s golf bag at the 1971 U.S. Open.
  • The three hangars are there for the next golfer and broadcaster’s three green jackets.
  • The sixth icon is for the player who won two majors in 1956 but could have easily ended up being a roughneck rather than a golfer.

Did you figure them all out?

I got the second one right away. Admittedly, I never knew that George Gordon was from Texas. I’ve not had that much fun since I looked under the cap of a Lucky Lager.

Final Thoughts on the Toulon Design Small Batch Texas

Toulon Design Small Batch Texas

Toulon Golf whipped up their familiar Small Batch recipe with the Texas. It’s expensive, made in limited quantities and honors something to do with the history of golf.

Granted, most of us will never be able to afford one of these $1,800 putters. Texas oil billionaires will probably be the ones with the funds and inclination to snatch them up. That way they can put one in each of their private jets.

Even so, I appreciate how figuring out the meaning of the icons allowed us common folk to take some joy in and connect with the release of the Small Batch Texas. Doing so got me thinking about what my representative icon would be.

What is your icon?

FAQ: Toulon Design Small Batch Texas Putter

How many Small Batch Texas putters are being produced?

Although Texas is huge, the release number will still be small with only 75 available worldwide.

I’ve figured out who the sole icons represent but what about the three stars?

If we ever get locked in an escape room, I want you with me. There is a story in the stars as well. The three stars are there for Sean Toulon’s three sons. Perhaps one or all of them were conceived in Texas.

Shouldn’t a collectible putter be one that includes rare putting technologies?

Sometimes this is the case, like with the Scotty Cameron Champion’s Choice putters and their teryllium faces. That’s a limited edition with tech. Other times it is just scarcity and coolness that makes a putter collectible. It’s similar to trading card collecting. Change the color of foil on a basketball card and you potentially added one, if not two, zeros to the value. If you believe basketball cards don’t cost $1,800, you are in error.

Is the 904L stainless steel thing just a marketing ploy?

Absolutely! Being able to say their putter is made from “Rolex steel” is a big marketing coup for Toulon. I’m not aware of any other putters made from this steel. The fact that it behaves favorably when wet is a bonus. This metal separates the Small Batch putters from the others. That’s good marketing and manufacturing.
