Any word on a new flagship model to supersede the S62? Id hate to buy one only to find out a new model is just around the corner..

I’ve looked for reviews of the S42 and, not surprisingly, there are none. Based on the reviews for the S40, the biggest negatives seem to be an occasional difficulty in finding a satellite. I have the Garmin Approach G8 which works pretty well except at times, it seems to be completely lost. On a course I’m not familiar with, this could have serious consequences. Would like to know if the software/firmware has been upgraded on the S42 to overcome these kind of problems.

I own Garmin S6 first, then S20 and S60… all have terrible battery problems. It stopped charging after a year and so… while under warranty, it took more than 30 days in get it done. Just recently purchased S40 and it stop working after 2 days. Getting replacement is paint in the ass in Indonesia.

I purchased the Vivoactive 3 last year, and I have no complaints with the watch so far. It performs all of the same functions when paired with the Garmin Golf App, at a much cheaper price point.

As a Fenix 5 plus owner, I’d suggest doing your research before buying a Garmin golfing device. Yes, they do a great job of providing yardage, but if you’re looking for significant insight from their mobile app, then you might want to temper expectations.

Garmin has pushed out two updates to the golf iOS app in the past 7-8 months, while other garmin apps regularly receive updates, so its apparent that Garmin isn’t fully invested in supporting their golfing community. The insight provided in the app itself is very limited when compared to something like Skycaddie, and you can’t export you data & take elsewhere.

Point being, yes they make good devices, but thats about it. If you’re expecting anything more than a yardage device, then you’ll probably be a bit disappointed..

FYI They just recently pushed a major update to the app to support the new gen devices and functionality.

Are there any material improvements on the S42? Other than slightly different color choices, I could not see anything. Battery life is mentioned in the article, but on Garmin’s website the S42 and S40 are listed as having the same battery life (15 hours GPS, 10 days as a normal watch). I checked the feature list between the two and I didn’t see any differences there either. Just curious if this is meaningful refresh or simply a branding update.

S62 is the flagship and was released last year. These are just the refreshes for the lower models to bring them in line with that one.

For what it’s worth, the battery life on the S62 is WAY better than the S60… but I have no idea if the difference will be the same down the chain. Feature wise, there are a few updates to improve QOL but they’re not dramatically different than what they’re replacing.
