Golf Crowds Are Getting More Belligerent By The Tournament

In my quest to be more positive, I’ll start this article with a huge round of applause for Cameron Young’s sensational victory at the Players Championship.

Stuffing one close on 17, rolling home a tricky birdie putt, then piping a drive 375 yards down the 18th fairway—the longest drive on that hole in the Shotlink era—is something sensational.

Young is a remarkable talent and it was only a matter of time before he broke out in a major way. He got his first PGA Tour win, then played awesome golf at the Ryder Cup. Now he has a Players title.

He’s not a one-trick pony, either. Young drives the eyes out of it but is also a tremendous iron player and an above-average putter.

There are a lot more victories in his future. The floodgates might be opening.

We had a great Players Champ week. What a finish. Deserving champion. And the conditions were phenomenal! The Tour finally got the memo that a firm and fast Sawgrass is what we want to see.

But I need to get something off my chest

OK, now onto the negative part (please be patient, there is only so much about myself I can change).

What is with this never-ending movement of golf crowds yelling the dumbest shit you’ve ever heard immediately after someone hits?

I know it’s been bad for many years but it feels like every shot with a crowd present is permanently open-mic night. The soundtrack to tournament golf is a collection of fans trying to rise above the cacophony to get a rise out of their friends. We hear fewer roars and more disjointed shouts.

And now it goes well beyond that—we’re talking about golf crowds getting increasingly more belligerent (and, let’s face it, dumber) over the years.

You could hear these imbeciles giving crap to Matthew Fitzpatrick as he stepped to the 18th tee Sunday at TPC Sawgrass … because he plays for Europe in the Ryder Cup?

This is embarrassing behavior from a golf crowd. Since when has nationality mattered at a Tour event to the point where fans need to root for Americans?

Sure, I guess we can start chanting U-S-A at Young. It’s a little weird but it’s fine.

Of course, it’s reasonable for the crowd to favor one player over the other.

But booing a guy as he steps up to hit one of the most important tee shots of his life?

That’s way over the line—and it wasn’t the only time the crowd was acting in a way we have become accustomed to, at least here in the United States where post-COVID bro culture is pretty representative of modern-day golf galleries.

Just look at what happened at the Ryder Cup. It’s disgraceful.

It seems as if too many people view golf events as an excuse to drink and start yelling whatever the hell they want at guys, whenever the hell they want to do it. They think they are invincible.

It’s clearly been getting worse as so many events try to copy the Phoenix Open atmosphere.

And this isn’t even mentioning how someone can gamble on a player and then berate them verbally in a way that is really outside the normal scope of what a golf tournament should contain.

Kick (those fans) off the Tour, Doug.

I miss when golf crowds had some class

Golf should hold itself to a higher standard than this drivel.

Other sports have more substantial boundaries between the crowd and players. Jeering is a part of the fabric of sports but it shouldn’t be a part of the fabric of Tour events in the way we saw on Sunday.

Is it too much to ask for golf fans to have a modicum of respect?

This is why the Masters and Open Championship are on another level. Patrons/galleries are civilized and only supportive. You don’t boo at Augusta or St Andrews. Come on, now.

It’s a fine line. If you’re going to throw a party around a golf tournament, we can expect there to be some fans who don’t know how to handle their liquor or act like a normal human being.

But the players themselves are owed a fair opportunity to play this extremely difficult game without insults being thrown at them during their pre-shot routine. This isn’t hockey or football.

At least wait until after the shot is hit to yell “mashed potatoes” (very original).

Am I out of line here? Let me know below in the comments.

Over many long years I’ve seen decency plummet, as my teachers and professors said cursing shows your lack of intelligence and vocabulary. Add alcohol to the mix and you arrive at where we’re at. Limit the drinks have undercover officers in the crowds and pull them out throw them in jail and ban them. Not to sound like an old man but our society has sunk to no repercussions for breaking laws or rules

Well, it is up to the PGA and the host site to deal with this. Set rules of decorum, post them at the venue and around the site and have people empowered to remove those who violate those rules. Simple really. Someone has paid real money to view some golf tournament and when they get kicked out, even trespassed by the PGA from all future events, people will learn very quickly they are not fooling around.

Very tired of hearing it. Even my granddaughters asked me why “the watchers were so mean”. I’ve been a fan since 80s but never really got as serious into watching all four days and every tournament as I am today. With all the tech we have now, it would be easy to flag, warn, and finally prevent those truly belligerent ones from ever attending any play again.
I don’t think players being “salesmen” and getting more personal with fans will help. Good players are lucky If they get more than 1 day off a week. Missing a cut or just not playing is the only way they get time off.
Tech the worst ones out. Make examples of them, announce it, publish it, be vigilant about it. It will calm. It’s a full system that has to be in place but it works, it is low visibility to everyone else, they just know order is maintained and gives the “actor” a fair chance to continue attending if they want to cooperate.

WOW!!!! I’d say there is a quorum here in agreement with you; and happily, group of people who are also willing to stand-up and call out those who want to add a political aspect on which to blame said behavior; I’ll leave politics out of this in favor of just wondering how much of this behavior is attributable to a lack of tangible consequences and a societal pursuit of “clicks” for validation rather than the ability to value intrinsic satisfaction.

I say, Amen and Amen!! I’m totally embarassed by the classless fans. They have no knowledge of golf etiquette. The alcohol consumption is driving the game down. It has to be stopped before we are more of a laughing stock in golf circles. Throw the bums out!! Curtail the drinking through a bar code system. The PGA has to get a handle on this.

I recall the days 30+ years ago watching the WM Phoenix Open before the 16th hole became the circus it is today, or Animal House West as I like to call it. There is no respect for the players and fellow spectators anymore, too much alcohol and the corporate money controls everything. I used to take my kids when they were young, but stopped when it became something I didn’t want them to see or hear. The Thunderbirds have made some good changes over the years to accommodate the crowds, donate money to charities ,and they also treat Veterans pretty well, but it seems they too have been steamrolled into accepting bad behavior just due to the money that has corrupted the sport. I think its time the tour officials, broadcasters and the players make some PSA’s and reinforce better behavior or lose the true golf fans and diminish the beauty of the sport, it might already be too late.

I’ve been reflecting on several shifts in our society since the early 2010s. It seems that factors like the pandemic, extreme political polarization, and the monetization of online spaces have contributed to a noticeable decline in overall self-respect. While social media is certainly part of the problem, there is a broader sense that people no longer value self-respect as they once did.

I think the issue goes well beyond the Tour. I have maintained for quite some time (7 decades of observation) that as a country we have generally, as a whole, lost our civility. Just think about how people drive; who heard of road rage in the 50s – 70s? Who ever disrespected teachers, principals, & administrators back then. City & township council meetings everywhere now routinely devolve into shouting matches. Name a topic or gathering & consider the tone of the discourse now versus then.
Can the tour do anything to quell this trend? Maybe on the margins; but get ready for the law suits to defend egreagious behavior. The train has left the station.
Every society since the dawn has seen its rise & then ultimate fall due to the fabric of their society being torn apart.

This is a simple one. There are 3 factors. 1. Social Media; everyone needs attention. They simply can’t go to an event and behave themselves because they live on social media and it bleeds into real life. They simply don’t have the emotional intelligence to separate the two. 2. Gambling; these fans want to affect the outcome. 3. Immaturity; the idea that freedom is doing whatever you want, whenever you want to whom every you want to do it to (social media). That is the opposite of freedom. Freedom is not doing whatever you want, but the strength of character to do what is good, true, and right. We have a society that is built on me first and it breeds inconsideration, boorish behavior and selfishness. The other problem is it has bled on to the public golf course where the lack of etiquette and disrespect for others has increased 100 fold in since the Scamdempic.

The pga tour has a drinking, cell phone, and gambling problem. When you mix all of those together, there is no doubt you can have someone in the crowd wishing a player to miss that putt or that one particular iron shot.

The Masters has a no phone policy. The crowd is respectful. The “patrons” can’t place live bets online. They can drink though…and every once in a while, they experience a drunk disturber.
Golf and other sports have lost their souls. A considerable amount of fans (Not all of them of course) are now cheering for the pleasure of their own benefit rather than the admiration of the art which the sport can present before their eyes

Great answer, let me add one more PGA problem. ….Money. When crowds were smaller, there were a higher % of serious fans and fewer casual fans. With a lack of civility, that will be hard to tackle. Should they consider adding a drinking barcode to limit purchases to 2 brewskies per patron ticket? Including free refreshments is a Godsend to keep the lines short, but relatively unlimited access to alcohol isn’t working. College football limits and other sports restrict sales after some point in the contest. If a patron is put off by a limit, so be it. At least it will stop the zealous from ruining it for the rest of us.

Our group now moves our ball out of divots and rake and place in the bunkers. Why should anyone have to play out of someone’s footprints in the bunker because some fat drunk slob could care less. They want to be funny and we all know they are just a bunch of children. I agree with grabbing them by the ear and toss them out on their butts the chanting of the USA at the last tournament. Covid brought people into the game that have no idea about golf. It’s getting out of hand at tournaments. No one knows the etiquette or history. I don’t like it but that’s the way it is. I think you should have to know etiquette, things like pace of play, fixing ball marks, etc. Before you’re allowed on the course. And don’t get me started about playing from the wrong tees. Oh well, things change.

But it is particularly glaring to see these fat, drunk, stupid slobs shooting their mouths off at what has always been classy events like golf. I’d like to know who the hell raised these sloppy morons? They sure didn’t instill good manners and respect for individuals or institutions like golf, who are the pinnacle of the game. Instead, these fools come out to these fabulous tournaments taking place on some of the most beautifully manicured acres, and treat it like it is a drunken frat party. There are two classes of idiots we are talking about here. The “Mashed potatoes!” types are the ones who have their DVRs recording, hoping the telecast will catch them shouting, so that the next time they get together with their bros, they can play it back for them and proudly announce “That was me! Cool, huh?”. And their bros will all agree, even if some of them are secretly thinking “What a dick!”.

The other group is more insidious. These types always travel in packs, are usually fueled by alcohol, and shout racist, misogynist, homophobic etc comments because they feel secure with their pack around them. They are the types who will be the first to don brown shirts if this country keeps heading in the direction it’s going.

Both types do what they do partly because they don’t believe anyone can stop them, and in today’s world to a large extent they are right. No one is willing to risk the consequences of confronting the perpetrators. That doesn’t mean it is impossible to stop them. It doesn’t happen at the Masters because it is understood from the get go that it will not be tolerated. Unfortunately the PGA does not feel the need to do anything about it, and won’t until the optics get so bad that they have to.

I stand by my comments. We are talking about people whose sense of “national pride” causes them to yell epithets at competitors from other countries, and throw beers at those competitor’s families. They feel safe doing so because they are protected by their pack. I’ve seen this type of behavior all my life, and it seems to be getting worse and worse. Maybe you just see bros getting drunk and behaving badly. I see something darker beneath it.

There’s a difference between the class clown and the class comedian. The class clown is the annoying kid seated at the back off the class who isn’t funny and shouts out random stuff because he needs attention. The class comedian is the kid the teacher usually positions close the the front because they share witty and funny observations, often designed for just the teacher and a few others to hear. Too many class clowns at these events of late.

You are not out of line. It’s nauseating, childish and I hate to say it an American thing, I think.
Years ago, I visited Arizona to play golf, I was with my coaching Pro and some other people on holiday and also playing in a pro-am. During one of our rounds, my pro friend Tony was just about to hit his tee shot on a par 3, when a large overweight American gentleman, stepped out from behind the hedge next to the tee, clearly pulling his fly up after having watered the course somewhere close by. He stepped straight on to the tee box behind where Tony was, Tony managed to stop his swing and we all looked at this guy and he said in a really loud brash voice, “Oh don’t mind me I am just looking to see where the pin is on this hole!”

I was like, are you kidding dude – I mean I don’t even need to explain the stupidity of the man and his attitude. I said to the guys I was with; his group is the group we can hear from all over the course, loud and ignorant. I have lived in 4 countries and played golf in many countries round the world. I have never encountered anything like this since.
Anyway, one of the reasons I like watching other Tours is so I don’t have to listen to nob heads trying to be funny in front of people so they can get a half mast if people laugh!

      Keep preaching it brother!

This is another example of the entitled world that we live in, entitled individuals and groups who do not care about anyone but themselves. As long as they can drink and swear and make fun of anyone the choose without repercussions this behavior will continue.

I think you nailed the topic well Sean. I have been noticing more stupid comments being yelled out in tour event coverage particularly at Players from the Europe RC team and it has to stop. I was one of the lone Europe fans walking the course at Whistling Straits in the 2020 Ryder Cup and I was disgusted by some of the insults I heard yelled at European players mid swing. Even though I wasn’t following the US I still applauded quality golf from either side. Furthermore, the offensive insults yelled at player’s families and wives in New York last year was next level and you know it’s bad when Rory tells a patron to go f*ck themselves on world television. And then some tool in the crowd throws a beer at his wife. The 16th at the WM open was a great concept initially but has also gone too far, promoting people to loaded on booze all day and yell and throw shit. Security needs to be increased during tournaments with idiots thrown out on their first strike with a ban of at least 3 years from any tour event to shut them up.

Indoor golf hasn’t helped, they all seem to be shouting, so they think they can bring it to the golf course. Rangers should be allowed to eject the culprits near the teeing area, at football matches no spectator is allowed on the pitch during play, so perhaps a distance between player and spectator could be employed.

I will say it’s not directly Trumps fault, but to defend Trumps lack of decorum in office is an interesting position to take. I would argue that Trump has not normalized this behavior, but his election is a byproduct of our society embracing it. So it’s a bit of a chicken and egg scenario. To act like there’s probably not a connection, Trumps fault or not, is likely a oversimplification of our society.

I don’t read every article on Golf Spy, but I can’t remember one that garnered as many comments as this one. At 70+ I have seen a lot of golf. When my father took me to my first professional tournament in the 60’s someone making comments like today would have been challenged by all the other patrons around them. Today you challenge someone and your just instigating a fight. Attempting to sugget to someone that yells at a golf tournament will likely be disregarded and then you will be classified as a boor instead of someone who respects the game. In the old days, there was a constant buzz but more a quiet hush until someone made a great shot and then there has a massive cheer. If it was a bad shot it was simply a prolonged AHHH! And that was it. Augusta is the only place that behavior still exists. I live in Jacksonville and I don’t go to the tournament anymore, because I don’t want to deal with the masses and the fools. I have said for several years, I will go to the Masters, but beyond that I am not interested, and I love golf. I hope your article kicks off a movement toward some changes. Come on now …. this is not that difficult a problem for either the Tour or tournament hosts to solve. When you sell people an entry pass, there should be a code of conduct on it that is written on the pass and is a condition of staying on the premises. Then have your security guards remove idiots like this quickly and consistently and soon the pack will get the message. Enforce the standard and it will stop because nobody wants to pay and then get ejected. We need to stop making excuses for not dealing with it. The idiots in the crowd will always do what they are permitted to get away with. No different than dealing with children ….

One would think that after the shame of the Ryder Cup that American fans would have some humility and be working extra hard to be good citizens of the game. While some in this forum have dismissed it, when lies are accepted as truth, when denigrating those who disagree with you is celebrated, and when money takes the places of morals, society breaks down. Alcohol may embolden some, but the breakdown in fan behavior is due to the lack of leadership setting the right example. It’s time the PGA Tour steps up and players step up to demand better behavior with zero exceptions. It’s past time for letters of apology and hollow statements about doing better. It’s time to take action. Will anyone have the moral compass and the courage to do so?

Golf’s DNA is different from other sports; code of conduct as well as the requirement that golfers are responsible for applying your own penalties are all covered in Rule 1. Spectator behavior is also expected to be different from other sports; I’m not saying that you cannot be more enthusiastic than the proverbial ‘golf clap’, but shouting stupid things during and after player’s swings is completely unacceptable. I hope that Brian Rolapp is reading these comments because the PGA Tour must do something about it to enforce a spectator code of conduct as well. We know it’s possible, the Masters does just fine. As an American, I am completely embarrassed by the “USA” chants at stroke play golf tournament. I was lucky enough to be on hand at the US Open in Pinehurst for the for the final round; the “USA” chants when Bryson and Rory were battling out at the end put me squarely in the Rory camp. Watching the end of the Player’s Championship was the same. We all love golf for why it is unique, let’s not let it lose its identity.

Until fans are removed from the course and/or fined for obnoxious behavior and vulgar language, this will be an issue.

I agree 100% with your commentary. I was completely disgusted with the fan behavior exhibited yesterday at Sawgrass.
There’s absolutely no excuse for this type of behavior and unless it’s addressed soon, it’s only going to get worse. This doesn’t happen at ANGC or The Open Championship. It should not be tolerated on the PGA Tour.
30 years ago, I volunteered at the local PGA event and this was not on anyone’s radar. Times change, I get that. The advent of cell phones and social media has certainly has afforded people the opportunity to be seen and pursue their “15 minutes of fame” on a scale previously unimagined. That being said, this has to stop. I understand Ryder Cup/President’s Cup fervor. This is so NOT that.
Maybe in addition to Marshals and Hole Captains the tournaments need to enlist “bouncers?”
At the very least, the Tour should very prominently place signage at the entrances of their tournaments that explicitly spell out how unruly behavior and outbursts will not be tolerated. I also like the idea of having “looped videos,” placed around the course, running continuously, of top-ranked American golfers explaining the consequences of misbehavior. Next year the tickets/badges need to have behavioral guidelines spelled out.
I understand that the occasional incident might occur, but yesterday was not that. Let’s see if the new Tour Commissioner is worth his salt…

It’s a balancing act between “grow the game” and “policing the crowds.” Encouraging loud music (some of it vulgar and heard from afar) to be played while you play, and outings where rowdiness is the norm, have lead to the crossing of the line in all aspects of society. Take a look at the bumper stickers and tee-shirts that abound (“F*** Cancer”, etc. are prevalent), and we expect fans to be courteous at sporting events? You get what you expect and our societal expectation levels are lower and lower.

All overpopulated sport events are a demonstration anti-social behavior by packing too many people shoulder to shoulder. Like the old laboratory studies of packing too many rats in a cage. They bite, they fight and even murder each other. Some suggested solutions won’t work. Ban ticket sales to previous offenders? The guy gets his meek church attending sister-in-law to buy the tickets for him. Hire more security officers to eject bad people? No venue can afford a 1:1 ratio of cops vs. villians. The problem is all about the money. Corporations promoting and taking advantage of consumer masses. Pack them in and pick the money out of their pockets. Just like our densely populated and crime ridden cities, there’s just too many humans. The percentage of bad people might be the same as in previous generations but there’s just a whole lot more of them. Golf microcosim solution? Limit admission tickets sales to a crowd that would only be one row deep at the ropes. Keep that from being elitist? Tickets are sold by a lottery. Ticket is valid for lottery winners only, no resale schemes. (Radiohead successfully did that during their last European tour). Eliminate the stadium seating. Ban alcohol sales. But those ideas are non-starters, mega-corporations would fight any plan to reduce their earnings. Planet earth human population is 8.3 billion and growing. Again it’s all about the money.

If enough viewers are sick of listening to the stupidity and abuse and do the same maybe the revenue drop will stimulate the media companies who rely on advertising revenue to get the PGA Tour to do something to stamp it out. Well, it’s pretty clear that (almost) everyone agrees that golf crowds are going the wrong way. Will the PGA have the courage to put at risk some of their revenue by taking steps to reduce boorish behavior.? Those steps include: 1. notifying patrons that boorish behaviour is not allowed and people will be ejected, then set up PGA Umpires to enforce it. throw out the worst offenders. 2. stop alcohol sales at least an hour before the tournament is expected to end (even minor league baseball does that) 3. somebody suggested strengthening the dress code for players; what about for fans, as in no cut-off jeans; no wife-beater t-shirts. essentially follow the rules for most private clubs.
Does the PGA have the courage to do it? I doubt it, money rules.

While crowd behavior has become increasingly embarrassing the past few years, the PGA and its players are equally to blame. The PGA encouraged rowdy behavior at the Phoenix Open for years because it helped TV ratings. The players also help encourage this behavior by their lack of a response. With a few exceptions like Justin Thomas and Cameron Young, most of the players turned a blind eye and a deaf ear to the “F Rory McIlroy” shouts and abuse of his wife at the Ryder Cup. And Captain Bradley showed true leadership by dismissing Ryder Cup fan behavior as “passionate” and attacking the media who questioned whether the players may have stoked the fans.

As my Pa used to say, it’s easier for folks to say (shout) something stupid than something intelligent. Mix in unrestricted alcohol, and you get what you get. Limit alcohol sales to be from 11am to 3pm (‘fans’ really need to start at 9am or earlier?). If you want to drink after 3pm, you go to specific tents or areas but you lose access to the course. And no buying 4 beers at a time – you want beers for you and your buds, you all go get in line and get your beer (you want another, finish that one and get back in line). My other comment: it has to do with respect for another person. There hardly is any nowadays.

This has been a problem for a long time. Yell the dumbest things you can think of and think it’s actually clever. Go these people go back to work on Monday and ask everyone if they heard them yelling? I doubt it. The tour wants to bring golf out of the old, stuffed shirt era, so they shouldn’t be surprised when this happens. I remember hearing Colt Knost saying at the Waste Management that if you don’t like this you don’t like golf. I guess I don’t like golf. It’s been happening long enough that you can’t blame one political party like some of the other comments suggest. It’s more of an American problem because I watch a lot of the DP Tour and this doesn’t take place. When your commercials are heavily alcohol and gambling based it’s no surprise this is the outcome.

It also takes place on the course. You can hear people, usually inebriated screaming and yelling 3 holes away. Or instead of quietly playing music, they are blasting it at concert level. Do courses do anything about it, usually not. They want to make money so they don’t control it and pack the course as much as they can.

I guess this is the price we’ll pay until the tournaments or the tour do something about it and golf courses for us decide to enforce civil behavior.

The first pro that turned up on the 1st tee of a Tour event wearing a Hoodie, should have been told it wasn’t appropriate clothing. What next will be deemed acceptable: jeans and a ‘beater’?

I agree that the “fans” are way out of line at the golf tournaments period. I was a volunteer a the woman’s open in Lancaster PA some years back and the crowds were way better back then. You could have heard a pin drop at any time when the women were putting teeing off etc period. We need to get back to that classy time again in the Men’s league.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I’m British and have, until recently, enjoyed watching American golf. I have travelled to your country to watch PGA Tour Events. But I won’t be doing so in future unless things change. My hope is that the nationalistic fervour that appears to be gripping America is NOT representative of the American people, whom I have previously found welcoming, thoughtful and friendly. I think the behaviour of the crowds and the outbursts from some public figures is damaging to everyone.

The bro culture, cheered on by the coarsest President in our history and the VP and their fellow travelers in social media, has drilled down into every social interaction we have in this country, including golf. The reason that The Masters patrons are civilized and don’t boo, etc. is they don’t tolerate bad behavior at Augusta. If you pull that crap they kick you out AND you will not be allowed back to the the tournament EVER.
The PGA tour needs to increase security at events, maybe have undercover in the crowds and start kicking people out for bad behavior, cancel their tickets and put them on a No Tickets Allowed list for the following year. Once examples are made and people realize this is going to be standard procedure at EVERY PGA Tour event this BS will stop.

One of the reasons The Masters is such a joy to watch are their strict rules of conduct. Announcers have been kicked out for saying the wrong things. “Patrons” get their asses removed and I have friends who witnessed it over the years. I have a good buddy who lives near Beth Page who sent me expensive Ryder Cup clothing from it last year that I cannot wear because I am ashamed of what went on. Had I been at The Players yesterday I would have yelled at the a-holes to shut up. I’m surprised and ashamed no one did.

You’re correct. No one has any type of etiquette. When I started playing golf 25 years ago, at my first golf lesson, my golf teacher gave me a book on golf etiquette, and it taught me how to behave on the golf course and in life. People enjoy playing a round with me because I fix my divots, and I am not loud or have music blasting or take phone calls in the middle of the round. Unfortunately, many new players don’t have proper golf etiquette, and this has made the game less enjoyable.

This type of behavior is not new and certainly not limited to golf. I coached youth sports years ago and the things parents yelled at umpires, coaches and other kids was ridiculous. My solution was to ship the parents to a remote location and let them watch a live feed. Golf could use the same. My favorite golf broadcast of all time was the Covid Masters. NO FANS!! You could see the beauty of the course without a hoard crowding around every shot. I know…unreasonable…but… So for now, when I watch golf I mute the sound and watch the action.

There is a little league in NJ that instituted a rule where if a parent yelled at an umpire, they had to umpire three games before they would be allowed back into the stands. I love how that little rule completely flipped the tables on the ever increasing rate of parents berating the umpires. I personally love creative punishments like that. Lean into the bad behavior. Don’t specifically ban the behavior, but give people a choice with explicit consequences. Leave it up to individuals to make the choice. Maybe the PGA Tour could do something similar?

Sean, at the start of each season (girls travel softball) I would meet with the parents and explain that I or another coach would talk with the umpires if needed…they could show their disagreement with a call (within reason) but never get personal. A hard and fast rule was to NEVER yell or say anything derogatory about a girl on either team. And finally, if the parents got out of hand I was willing to immediately forfeit a game. If they didn’t like those conditions they were welcome to look for another team…regardless of how talented their daughter was. Fortunately, I coached some really good players, we won our fair share of games and we were well respected in the leagues where we played.

For example, when watching golf why is there any reference to the country the player is from? The broadcast shows the current score, what hole they are on, etc. along with the the flag of the country of that player…why? Or how come CBS constantly focused on England not winning “The Players”? Unless it’s the Ryder Cup or President’s it’s about the player not where they are from.

My partner and I joined a course with a high daily greens fee and that has helped; not everyone can afford an exclusive country club. I used to belong to a public club and, clearly, the staff was afraid of these drunks and also afraid of the bottom line $$$ if they cut them off. Most of these bros treat a golf course like a bar with a golf course attached instead of the other way around. There’s quite a few local public courses that have just become unplayable.

Of course there are some traditions that need to be eliminated – got that. Nationalism always something you might feel , many routed for Norman over Faldo because he was gee, so proper! However we had values, we expressed our nationalism at the International competitions. Key was it began to get out of hand LONG AGO and the powers to be and the Players failed to stop it, how, been hard but they could influence. To me the article has it right. Weak minded people who desperately want attention use social media and now golf as a platform – the answer — consequences? A fan yells out and marshals catch them, throw out, tagged with tons of photos as idiot — facial scanners employed so they can never attend another event hahahaha — won’t work — here is another idea — bikers get a bounty by eliminating the loud mouths? Messing with you my friend thanks for expressing your disdain —- until our society grows up, stopping this trend —- where jerks think that their rights outweigh the rights of others — we are stuck with asses yelling out. Dumb, well that is easy to see, America spends more per student then most in the world yet Americans fall into lower 20 as goes STEM our brilliant educators tell us if VITAL, make you wonder what are they being taught?

Rooting out these obnoxious fans at most tournaments is a difficult process and even if law enforcement personnel remove them from the grounds, they will be back. The Master’s has a distinctive advantage in that one cannot get into the tournament without a badge. Those badges are traced to a specific owner and in the case of unfitting behavior, will be revoked permanently.
This is not an easy problem to solve and it’s going to take a combined effort by the Tour, tournament organizers and perhaps even the television media to resolve it.

For me, it’s not even the golf clap or the traditions that the vile golf fan has ruined. These golf numpties have ruined civility outside of the ropes. The problem is cancerous. It used to be only the “mashed potatoes” guy in the background. Now, it’s the beligerent, boorish bros bashing basically everyone who isn’t wearing stars and stripes. Why? Because Europe happens to play better for 3 days every other year? It’s one thing to pull for your team or your guy, earnestly willing them to the finish. It’s entirely another to attempt to tear down another human simply because they play golf under another banner. Nevermind the fact that 98% of those who tee it up at these events live in America.

Blaming the government for a lack of individual restraint at a sporting event is ridiculous. Many no longer want to take responsibility for anything and it starts at the top – this is a very recent decline in ethics and moral standards that many like because it lets them off the hook. I concur! It’s consistent however with our bigger societal issue here in the US where we seem to have just completely lost any sort of respect for our fellow man. I see it everyday. Just driving around the town I live in where people are cutting one another off and driving like lunatics because apparently they think that’s okay. And it is specific to the United States. One of my favorite parts about traveling out of the country to golf, especially in the UK, is that people respect one another and don’t act the way that we do here. Frankly, it’s embarrassing. To listen to the hecklers as Fitzpatrick got ready to hit the shot from the pine straw was distracting and detracting from what had been a fantastic round of golf on his part. I wish I knew what the solution was! But grabbing those people the collar and physically removing them would certainly be a move in the right direction!

In my opinion, this behavior is the result of what the PGA Tour refers to as “growing the game”, whether they meant to trudge down this rabbit hole or not. It doesn’t help that we were introduced to Adam Sandler’s version of golf in 1996 (Happy Gilmore) followed by the ever degrading behavior of the WM tournament that has gone somewhat unchecked and fueled by way too much of your alcoholic beverage of choice. Oh, and let’s not forget the world shutdown of 2020 (COVID) where people seemed to have forgotten basic courtesy and tact. It also doesn’t help that the talking heads are always trying to find some little tidbit of dirt to help drive the unnecessary drama within the sport.

The WM Phoenix unleashed a monster. Then the Ryder Cup at Bethpage fined tuned it. It didn’t help that the idiot in charge of the PGA of America, Don Rea, excused the behavior and had a comedian as a hole announcer get overly obnoxious. Now add to the mix alcohol and immediate access to gambling options of every type and you have the perfect mix of stupidity.

I don’t want to go into the details or opinions on LIV vs. US PGA vs. DP World Tour, nor have I spent much time watching LIV content, but I have the impression that their competitions are very much a ‘party atmosphere’. Maybe there is some cross-over happening here with people who have seen rowdy behaviour being accepted at LIV competitions and certain PGA events and maybe at DP World Tour also, and taking this as a signal that it’s OK to behave like a moron at all golf competitions (except The Open and Masters).

Making golf accessible (playing as well as spectating) is hugely important and attending competitions should be fun, but a line has to be drawn at personal insults and distracting behaviour and offenders must be evicted with no questions asked. Zero tolerance is the only way to make it clear that moronic behavior is not welcome at golf events, unless the particular venue such as WM Phoenix or LIV choose to make it a ‘theme’.

You get the behaviors you enable and tolerate. You won’t see these behavior at the Masters. The PGA has enabled and tolerated this classless behavior for the sake of ticket and beer sales. The 16th hole at the Waste Management is exhibit A. When you let “patrons” throw things on the green you’ve lost control and sent the message that’s OK.

Yes, it’s gone too far. Not just golf, all sports. Took my kids to a Red Sox / Tampa game 20 years ago. They refused to go two nights later when I was offered free tickets, it was that “foul” an atmosphere. Human behavior 101: You get more behavior that you reward (affirmation from your buddies for being a foul-mouthed jerk) and less of what you punish (ejection for being a foul-mouthed jerk with no refund). Simple, but given a golf tour “soy boy” tour officials that won’t impose slow play penalties in the most obvious of circumstances, expect behavior to worsen, not improve. Sucks, don’t it?

What you are witnessing is the ghettoization of our Culture, now it is all ghetto talk and thug life. It is everywhere – all sports practice it and it is all the young levels of competition also. At no time did anyone say “oh that is not appropriate maybe we should sanction that behavior”, instead it was hey everyone is an individual and we should let them celebrate and act as their authentic self. And, here we are, when no one wanted to act like the adult in the room, we are stuck with millions of grown ups who have no idea that no wants to hear what they have to say.

So how are white males from 20 to 30 years old ghettoizing “our” culture? I can’t stand hearing the other crap on TV and that’s why I appreciate the Masters so much. It’s just not allowed and you WILL be escorted off of the property if you demonstrate poor golf decorum…period. You know who patrons are pulling for by the shear volume of the cheers. Jeers not necessary. That’s what it’s going to take at other PGA tour events and until it’s enforced, it’s only going to get worse, as it has been.

It’s a game that teaches you to think of others- don’t step in other people’s lines, don’t talk when someone is hitting, help your playing partners find their ball etc. Respect for the game and others have gone the way of American culture in general and become all individualistic and selfish. It’s a shame.

As someone who has the privilege of walking inside the ropes one tournament a year, I can vouch for the it’s getting worse aspect. People are yelling the dumbest and most incomprehensible crap at these guys. It’s why so many players have police escorts these days, the new fears on top of the pressure of the game. I’d like to see more idiots get tossed when it gets negative, there’s no need for that in a tour event.

I’m in agreement with your comments, Sean. We need more writers and golf commentators speaking up about this issue. Even in high school sports we are telling the crowds to cheer POSITIVELY for your team and not negatively against the opposing team. This is called SPORTSMANSHIP. Golf is supposed to be the premier sportsmanship game. We call penalties on ourselves and need no umpires or referees. We must keep good manners and good sportsmanship a part of the game. Let’s speak up.

Agree 1,000%! Golf spectator behavior (can’t call them fans as they are just people who have money to attend golf tournaments) has become more obscene and disgusting with each passing event. The threshold of tolerance is accepted by tournaments, television and media in the name of money and ratings. Start by removing ALL alcohol sales from events, establish and ENFORCE guidelines of spectator behavior and create zero tolerance policies.

I think that one answer to quell some of the fan “participation” that is out of bounds might be for the PGA and players to pursue ways for the fans to get to know the players better, their personalities, what they are about outside of golf. This would, hopefully, give the fans more players to pull FOR and not deride guys because they are from Ireland or elsewhere.

The model is what NASCAR has done for decades. The drivers are “salesmen” of their sport. Public appearances around the events’ locales, interviews, insights that support fans’ being able to interact with the guys. Golfers – as a whole – are seen as disconnected from the fans, unemotional “robots”. I think of some golfers who have done it differently, who have allowed fans inside their personalities and, I think that is positive for the game. Trevino, Fuzzy are the first that come to mind.

Are PGA players “connecting” with their fanbase? I think this is an area where the game could grow tremendously – for the game, the players, and the fans.
