How To Get The Masters Look Right At Home: What To Wear And What Not To Wear

The vast majority of us experience the magic of Augusta at home. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that aside from the fact that we have no way of getting official Masters merchandise and apparel at a reasonable price. Also, if you haven’t actually been to the Masters, wearing official merchandise feels a bit hollow. However, those of us who still want to capture the “Masters look” have more options than ever, good and bad. Here’s what to wear and, more importantly, what not to wear.

What To Buy

Bad Birdie Amateursland Active Hat – GOLF

The Bad Birdie Amateursland GOLF Hat is a perfect substitute for a real Masters hat. Look, it’s not the subtle cap with the ANGC logo that everyone wants but nothing is. This is akin to the slightly louder offerings sold at Augusta like the “PIMENTO” hat but stands on its own because it’s a little more fun. Bad Birdie’s Amateursland collection is easily one of my favorite Masters-inspired releases this year. It’s a playful inversion of the tournament while also adding hints of classic Disney through their anthropomorphic mascots. On this hat, we’ve got the azalea serving as the “o” in the word “GOLF.” I love that this hat uses the traditional Masters font but is more playful with the azalea mascot. This one is a clear winner.

Johnnie-O Hatcher Cotton Blend Crewneck Sweater

Depending on the vibe you’re going for, the Johnnie-O Hatcher Sweater is the perfect companion piece for the Bad Birdie GOLF Hat. As someone with a slightly more buttoned-up sense of style, I like to balance out my more whimsical pieces with something more muted and dressier. These pair so well because the pink of the sweater perfectly draws out the pink of the azalea from the hat and creates an incredibly cohesive picture. It’s also worth noting that the Hatcher Sweater is part of Jake Knapp’s official scripting this week. Hey, it might not be an authentic Masters piece but one of the more popular contenders will have it on there. That counts for something.

Bad Birdie Velocity 1/4 Zip

I’ve wanted a green Augusta National quarter-zip for as long as I can remember. I still don’t have one but you best believe I’ll be wearing my Bad Birdie Velocity 1/4 Zip this week. In our newsletter, I lamented that few, if any, players wear the right shade of green (or green at all) during the Masters. That doesn’t mean we can’t. Offered in varying shades of green, the Velocity is about as close as we’ll get to the real deal.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck Sweater

After watching Rory’s documentary on Prime, I noticed he was wearing an official ANGC crewneck sweater that was very similar in color to this Quince Mongolian Cashmere Crewneck. Quince specializes in creating high-end essentials at a great price. This one absolutely nails the Augusta National look and, like the tournament and club itself, is mature and refined.

Johnnie-O Pimento Polo

Again, it’s so important that you allow yourself to possess an element of whimsy. The Johnnie-O Pimento Polo is a fun yet elevated way of paying homage to the Masters. Is the classiest of golf shirts? No. But this is a shirt that can easily be dressed up or down and, most importantly, it is what it is. This is a novelty polo but what saves it is its pattern and color scheme. From a distance, the sandwiches actually look like flowers. That gives this shirt a ton of depth and says that you’re a person who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.

WAGGLE Azaleas Golf Hat

The WAGGLE Azaleas Hat actually looks like something that could have come directly from Augusta National. Against the white backdrop, the embroidered azaleas have a ton of detail and look great with the contrasting green brim. Subtle, powerful, visually striking, this hat is an easy wear.

What Not To Wear

J. Lindberg Tour Print Men’s Golf Polo Shirt

Seriously, this shirt is an unmitigated disaster. Not only is it loud, it’s absolutely hideous. This shirt is pretty much everything that Augusta National and anyone with any sense of style is against. Please, don’t wear this. It doesn’t resemble anything related to the Masters but rather a pixelated watermelon.

Sun Day Red Tigris Slamus Polo

After years of trying to look the other way, I’ve reached my saturation point with Tiger. That being said, even while we were all trying to root for him, aside from the Coral Standard Collection, the majority of Sun Day Red’s releases have been misses. The Tigris Slamus Polo is another definitive miss. Instead of being a celebration of the Masters, this is a walking shrine to Tiger, which is fine, aside from the fact that it’s hideous. This polo isn’t all that dissimilar to their Tiger Allover Polo. I’ll let you decide which is worse.

Good Good Fleece Hoodie

YouTube golf and the Masters don’t really go hand in hand. Personally, I’m not a fan of YouTube golf and I especially don’t care for Good Good. For whatever reason, in the YouTube landscape, there seems to be a marked level of immaturity with how most of these channels approach the game. I’m sorry, but if you’re looking to capture the essence of the Masters and Augusta National at home, you’re not doing it with a Good Good hoodie.

Walter Hagen Men’s Performance 11 Bloom Printed Golf Polo

Yikes. I see what Walter Hagen is going for here but this polo is abjectly terrible. I grew up being told that if I didn’t have anything nice to say not to say anything at all. So, we’re done here.

Rhoback Hesi Performance Hoodie

When it comes to Masters-inspired releases, at some point, someone got the bright idea that you can never have too many azaleas. This is a clear case of way too many azaleas. If the other items on this list are an ode to Augusta, this is an insult.
