Is 9-Hole Golf Becoming The New Normal? USGA Data Suggests A Shift

I’m a nine-holer.

Not because I can’t play 18. Not because I don’t want to. As a former college player and professional, I’ve played plenty of 36- and even 45-hole days.

But right now, nine holes just works.

We sneak in nine as many times a week as we can between work, school and everything else that fills a schedule. My kids are nine and 11, which makes nine holes a better fit for everyone. Some days it’s a two-person scramble. Other days, we all play our own ball. Late in the day, nine holes is fast, usually about an hour and a half, and it doesn’t feel like an event you have to plan around.

So when I saw the latest participation data from the USGA, I wasn’t surprised that golfers are choosing nine holes more often than they used to.

Nine-hole rounds are taking a bigger share

In 2025, U.S. golfers posted 82.25 million total scores, the highest total on record. Of those, 18.2 percent were nine-hole scores, up from 13.7 percent in 2020.

That total represents a 709,000-increase year over year, 5.0-percent growth from 2024, for nine-hole rounds. Let’s not forget these stats are just from golfers who have an established USGA handicap index and are supposed to be posting every round. My gut (and golf’s growing popularity) tells me there are plenty more nine-hole rounds not being posted.

Who’s playing nine holes?

Women are leading the shift toward nine-hole golf. New golfers are also supporting the trend.

In 2025, 30.3 percent of all scores posted by female golfers were nine-hole rounds, up 5.3 percentage points since 2020. For male golfers, 16.1 percent of scores were nine-hole rounds, up 4.6 points over the same period.

New golfers lean even more toward nine holes. For first-time female golfers, more than half of all scores were nine-hole rounds. For first-time male golfers, that figure was closer to 27 percent.

Are 18-hole golfers are switching to 9?

This is a fair question. Are golfers who have always played 18 cutting it down to nine?

What the data can say is this: total scores are rising while nine-hole scores are rising faster as a share of all scores. That combination suggests the growth in nine-hole play is not simply replacing 18-hole rounds across the board.

The way I see it is that nine holes appears to be expanding the ways golfers fit the game into their lives rather than signaling a full move away from 18-hole golf.

My take: Nine is just fine

I still believe 18 holes is better for performance. If you’re focused on scoring, tournament prep or long-term development, a full round matters. There are plenty of times I finish a nine-hole round and wish I could make the turn to see what would happen or to clean up a mess.

But nine holes turns golf from an event into an option. It fits into real schedules. It works for families. It works for beginners. It works when you want to play without committing your entire day.

Right now, nine holes is what keeps golf a constant in my week. And, based on the USGA data, more golfers are finding ways to make nine holes part of how they play.

Are you a nine-holer, too? Why?

Just saw this but have to add my comment. I refuse to play 9 holes! IF COURSES really want me to play 9 holes, then charge me HALF THE PRICE. I refuse to pay $38 for 9 and a cart, when 18 and a cart is $48. NO WAY NO HOW!!

I prefer 18 holes but life gets in the way on the weekends. Nine holes allows me to squeeze in 9 holes on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon. Also it allows me to play in the morning before work during the longer summer days. I can finish in 1:15 to 1:30 and be at my desk for work in the morning before 9am. The alternative is not playing very often.

By the time I dress for golf and get shoes and other equipment ready I’m usually thinking 18.

9 is my usual and 18 is just too much time for me. 12 or 15 is a perfect time and just the right number of holes to walk in my humble opinion. It’s always great to just get out on the course and play.

I will always choose to play 18 unless weather gets in the way. Even if it a 9 hole course, we usually just play a second loop and maybe change tees. One thing about many of the 18 hole courses I play, groups drop off after 9 and usually we can cruise on the back 9.

Playing either 18 or 9 holes of golf really limits your choices.
      Why not 12 holes?
      A front 6 and a back 6.
Maybe traditional golf numbers need to change.
On my 9 hole course I play 9 holes and then play 1,2,8,9 a second time for a total of 13 holes and just enough golf for me at about 90 minutes.

I usually play 9 because I can squeeze it in. I played 9 this morning in 1:17, I can usually do it in under 90 minutes if I’m not waiting on anyone.

I love a good 18 but it’s a commitment and tough to do during the week. I can knock out 9 before the office easy and there are 4 pretty good 9 hole courses within 20 minutes of my office.

The problem with 9 is how the usga projects an 18-hole differential. If you’re 4 under or 4 over for 9 it’s going to project the same back 9 score. Dumb. They should go back to combining 9-hike rounds for an 18-how differential.

      I agree.
I personally rarely play 18 holes except in scrambles events and tournaments and my handicap of 5 is closer to 9 if I play 18 because of mental and physical fatigue.

The 9 hole route has gotten my kids in enough golf to still enjoy going…also matches indoor simulator sessions that are comparatively short to 18 hole rounds. I do like 18-27-36 when time allows or at destinations…real life at home mostly only allows for 9.

Didn’t the USGA just start tracking in Jan 2024? Maybe skewed by people actually logging their 9 hole rounds.

For those New to golf , or limitations, that is a good way to start in Golf . If 18 time frame is a problem , then 9 holes it is. Better than not playing at all. I like to see slow players playing only nine holes or 18 holers are alway out of rhythm for there whole 18 holes . Slow play is really the Problem . Utilizing those course that have practice holes should be taken advantage of . Learning golf etiquette is a must . Everyone wins . Have a great season .

I am retired, I’m a member of a 27 hole course, it’s old and made to be walked. I would rather walk 9 holes than ride 18. I play 3 or 4 times a week, early mornings I have 3 different 9’s to choose from. And I have the remainder of my day for other things. I do play 18 and ride for club tournaments .

I’d say 2/3 of my rounds are 9 holes. 18 on weekends for sure but at 6 after work there’s only time for 9.

I posted a lot of 9 hole scores last year. They were an extra 9 holes played after finishing my 18 hole round. Not leaving the house for less than 18 holes.

Retiring 10 years ago, I looked forward to have lots of time to play golf. The reality is I am just about as busy being retired as I was when working full time. Getting nine in once or twice a week is all the time I can carve out for golf. I prefer to play 18, but my schedule just doesn’t seem to have enough time for a full round.

I’ve been playing 9 holes weekly for several years. Yes, I prefer 18 holes. But if I only played 18-hole rounds, I would probably only get out there twice a month at most.

Our weekly 9 is quick, relaxing, and it gives me the rest of my Sunday back.

Wrong, it’s simply the fact that 9 hole league rounds are now posting is were the increase is and honestly If your a real golfer you know this is a huge mistake as anyone can have a good 9 holes but putting together a 18 hole score is a different animal completely
All this does is lower handicaps unnaturally across the board for better players

My partner and I play 9 holes, we average 70 to 90 rounds a year in Michigan. We are 80 years of age and my partner has been clear of cancer, but can;t do 18 holes. Before his cancer we played 18, but now 9. We really enjoy the 9holes. Our course we play has 36 holes, so we get some change in shot making. I still play 18 in scramble tournaments or completion. I have been playing for 55 years now, hcp has been the best at 3 hcp. now it is a 10

I play par 3 9 hole courses on Sunday afternoons mostly and they’re for practicing my short game. I love to play 18 but it’s nearly an all day commitment that I can’t fit into every weekend . Either way I’m getting some sort of practice every week.

Although I prefer 18, 9 is just fine. I wish I had the time to play 18 more often but still have another year before I retire so I will take what I am given – that being said of the last 120 rounds I have played 62 were 9 holes and 58 were 18 holes – I love to walk the course but 18 is not really something I can do anymore, without really dragging the last few holes, so 9 fits me just fine.

I am retired and still play 18 with my over-80 foresome. However, i am trying to get my wife onto the course more often, so I am making an effort to get 9 holes in with her every week or every other week ……. her choice. She just doesn’t do 18 very well.

I believe 18 hole play is down, mainly due to cost. With some course rates up to $150-$180 a round, people won’t/can’t pony up that kind of money. GC operators want to push 9 hole rounds b/c they get more players out and increase the 9 hole rate. After all, it’s all about MONEY, isn’t it??!!

For people who work and/or have kids, there’s simply no way to play 18 after work unless you ignore your other responsibilities. If you work a 9-5 job, you can’t get to the course before 5:30 at the very best, and assuming everything else goes your way (no line in the pro shop, playing solo, you can immediately tee off, you wore your golf clothes to work – or golf in your work clothes, no one else on the course ever holds you up, you don’t have to hunt for any balls, you’re not riding a cart at a course with aggressive geofencing, your phone doesn’t ring, etc.) it’ll take you three hours to finish 18 holes.

At my latitude, I can only pull this off 58 days/year, between May 30 and July 26 (inclusive).

As soon as I decide to play 9 holes, that goes to 196 days/year, between Mar 10 and Sep 21 (inclusive). March isn’t anything like golf weather up here, we generally can’t get back onto the courses until April 15, so that’s really like 160 days, but it’s still about three times as many days.

18 holes is for weekends, for working folks.

Since we don’t have a driving range at our course, my front nine is like my driving range. My handicap would be much higher if I only played nine holes.

      1. Can’t stand the slow play during mornings and mid-day mens and womens golf assn events at my club, so I choose to play quick nines late in the day. 2. I prefer to walk if possible, and my course has such severe elevation changes that even with Alphard e-wheels, walking more than nine is a mistake. 3. Finally, if I shoot a hot “front nine” there is a nagging fear in my mind that I’ll blow it on the backside (we call this a WNS-wild nine swing), so keeping my round to just a super front nine is rewarding and confidence building. If my “front nine” is terrible, I’d just as soon call it a day.
