Is a $197 Zero-Torque Putter Any Good?

A first-time zero-torque experience, a few raised eyebrows—and some surprisingly good putting
I’ll start with a confession: this was my first real zero-torque putter. I’d read about them. I’d watched videos. I’d nodded along while smarter people than me explained why reducing torque through the stroke makes sense. But actually putting one in the bag—especially one I’d never heard of until recently? That felt like a leap.

Then the Lazrus Golf LAZ2 zero-torque mallet showed up. And if you’re wondering why we tried it, the answer is simple: it’s the most affordable zero-torque putter on the market. That alone made it interesting. Everything else made it impossible to ignore.

First Impressions: “That’s … actually really nice”

Let’s address the elephant on the putting green. When you pull a “random” putter out of the bag—especially one without Tour validation or a luxury price tag—you feel it. You feel the side-eye. You feel the quiet judgment. I felt it immediately.

Then I set it down behind the ball.

The LAZ2 is murdered-out black with a matte finish, clean lines and a shape that looks purpose-built instead of flashy. No glare. No gimmicks. Just confidence at address. Coming from a guy whose gamer is a Scotty Cameron Circa 62 Model 3 from about 15 years ago, the look at address was my biggest concern in making the switch. Taking the headcover off and setting it behind the ball removed any doubts I had about that.

And before I even rolled a putt, the internal monologue kicked in: “OK. I could actually game this.”

The first roll (and the first looks)

Zero-torque putters are supposed to keep the face stable. That’s the pitch. What I didn’t expect was how immediately obvious it felt. My stroke has always felt—and has recently been proven—to swing on a pretty pronounced arc. I tend to open it up going back and then release it moving through so lightening my grip pressure a bit and just letting this thing swing produced a different feel for me immediately.

The head just wanted to stay square. No manipulation. No steering. Like the putter was quietly saying, “Relax. I’ve got this.”

After a few putts, something else happened. The looks changed.

Someone asked, “What putter is that?”
Then, “Mind if I roll a few?”
Then, “Wait. How much did you say this costs?”

That’s when you know you’re on to something.

Diving in headfirst (Tournament round, why not?)

At some point, you stop pretending you’re just testing. I had a tournament round coming up and instead of easing into things like a responsible adult, I did what any sane golfer would do—I put it straight in play. No backup plan. No “just in case.” Because, why not?

If the zero-torque concept was going to work, this felt like the right environment to find out.

On-course performance: Stability for days

Over four or five rounds and several practice sessions, the story stayed consistent.

  • Stability was off the charts
  • The face stayed square through impact
  • Mishits lost less energy and less direction
  • The roll was exceptionally clean

The ball didn’t jump. It didn’t skid. It just hugged the ground and got into its roll quickly. Distance control—especially on longer putts—was better than expected. Short putts felt automatic in a way that’s hard to explain until you experience it.

It wasn’t flashy. It was calm. Reassuring.

Which, frankly, is exactly what you want from a putter.

The price-versus-reality disconnect

Here’s the part that still messes with my head.

Nothing about the LAZ2 feels like it should cost what it does.

  • Build quality? Legit.
  • Finish? Clean and durable.
  • Performance? Comparable to much more expensive zero-torque options.

This is where the Lazrus story really lands. It’s not just affordable; it’s disruptively affordable. The kind of price that makes you re-evaluate what you’re actually paying for elsewhere. A quick search finds a leader in the zero-torque space with a similar head style priced at about $500. That difference ain’t nothing.

The full-circle moment

After a few weeks, the same people who initially gave me that “interesting choice” look were now asking to borrow it. More than one of them has a Lazrus in the bag now. It’s easy to give subjective feedback and opinions but when you put this in the hands of golfers and they end up buying one, that’s a solid endorsement.

Final thoughts

The Lazrus LAZ2 was my introduction to zero-torque putters and I can honestly say that I’m a fan. It’s stable. It inspires confidence. It looks fantastic in the bag and behind the ball. And it does all of that at a price point that feels almost unfair.

If you’ve been curious about zero-torque putters but hesitant to commit, this is the easiest recommendation I’ve made in a long time. Sometimes the underdog putter just keeps draining putts while everyone else asks to try it.

Unfortunately, the LAZ2 is out of stock, but they do have a limited supply of the newly released LAZ2.5 in stock (pink head only with a -2 length). We will keep you updated on restocks as soon as we know more.

I bought one with the Black Friday code for $150, so I couldn’t pass up the chance to try it out. Brought it to the club and got asked about it 20+ times that day. At least 10 people rolled it and one I know for sure bought one immediately. I had the same issue with the arc putting before and now I hit my lines much more consistently. The only issue I have is figuring out speeds with a mallet after always using a blade. I love the putter. My only change is that I may put on a custom grip.

Not true – depending on inventory, they offer right and left handed options. In fact, their newest version is ONLY available in lefty right now! If you’re considering one, check their website regularly and see what’s in stock; it changes nearly daily from what I can tell.

Ordered one built to my specs on Friday evening built to my specs. Supposed to ship tonight and arrive to me in CA on Wednesday. When I ordered it said backordered for two weeks but perhaps they came in stock sooner. Had been looking at LAB but for the price difference going to give this a go. 30 return policy is icing on cake.

What is it with the golf equipment industry, companies and media, not showing the address position? Like what are we even doing? Its quite literally the only thing the matters in actual golf.

I just bought one after eyeing various ZT putters for several years but couldn’t bring myself to pay the outrageous asking prices. My first impression after one practice session on the putting green is all good, and hopefully it’ll work out in the long run. We should support an American company that makes a quality product at a reasonable price while providing good customer services.

I guess I just don’t understand. I have a Wilson Infinite West Loop. Putts great. When you lay the shaft over your finger and balance it, the face of the putter is flat. No toe hang, no heal hang…just flat. Easy to putt with. I have an old Ping Anser G2 that is the same way. I don’t feel any difference between them and the outrageously expensive “new” style putters. It almost sounds as if most people allow the putter to do whatever it chooses. I grip mine with both hands…it goes where I aim it. Of course I don’t use the pendulum shoulder stroke. I average 29-32 putts per round and carry a 4 handicap. I suppose I just don’t see the reason for the hype….I personally don’t putt with the machine that the L.A.B. guys demonstrate with. I guess I just don’t get it.

Is there a option on the size of the grip? I was wounded in both hands and the 2.0 grip is most comfortable. How do I go about applying for a military discount. Thank you Virgil Flowers

Great review, I got mine a few weeks ago after borrowing one from a friend. Results are amazing to date, full disclosure I’ve been using a center shafted putter for a year plus so the view from above was very familiar. Straight off the roll is pure, my home course has some slopey-spicy Poa greens which can get a little bumpy in the afternoon and hug the ground is a perfect description of the roll. First time with a ZT putter for me and like Andrew wrote this mallet just wants to go straight back and thru. Bonus feature for us older players, the back of the putter is thinned out making the backhand scoop easy to execute :-) Give it a try you won’t be disappointed.

I tested out a random $40 Lazrus 50-degree wedge, and i have to say, it’s shockingly good so far. Based on the face wear I have durability concerns, but for $40 there has to be a compromise somewhere.

I felt the same way about my Wilson Infinite and now my Wilson Infinite Buckingham. I didn’t NEED the new model as I was happy with the original, especially with you guys loving both of them. I bought the “Bucky” because it looked great and your testing. Same thing happened to me, “Sold Out” but the Wilson contacted me when they restocked.

It’s FANTASTIC to see another company, producing a great product, as a price point that “Regular Hacks” can afford and enjoy.

It still amazes me that people judge golf clubs on “looks”. In the words of Strother Martin in Butch Cassidy, “morons. I got morons on mah team”. Performance is all that matters. I’ve had some ugly sticks that perform well(still in the bag) and some absolutely beautiful ones I couldn’t hit worth a lick.

I agree, and I don’t even think these putters are that outrageous.

I remember when a regular mallet was a weird looking putter, as well as the 460cc drivers. We all adjust.

I have had this putter for about 2 months now, I must say it is a very good putter. The feel and sound of the ball coming off the putter face is very nice. i think it is a very good deal for the money. I have a large putter collection to compare it to. I highly recommend it. Customer service is also very helpful from my personal experiance.

Interesting. It has an Oz + Mezz look to it. Hopefully it’s back in stock soon, as at that price-point I can’t even build my own putter for that number.
