Is this Ultralight Driver the One for You?

As we creep into the second season of PXG’s Black Ops metalwoods lineup, it’s reasonable to wonder if new models are on the way.

The current evidence suggests they’re not.

Black Ops pricing is holding at $599, and the company has just announced the availability of a new Black Ops Ultra Lite driver.

Black Ops, but lighter

Ultralight drivers are nothing new, but stories often diverge when it comes to how the ultralight spec is achieved. For some brands, everything is ultralight. For others, ultralight is the result of filling the adjustable ports with lighter weights. PXG’s approach this time around is to add an entirely new head to the Black Ops lineup.

The Black Ops Ultra Lite driver head has a target weight of 189 grams. For context, that’s 14-grams lighter than the standard Black Ops. It’s a single fixed-weight design, which is unusual for PXG to say the least. I mean, even their Secret Weapon Mini driver has four swappable weights.

That’s not to say you don’t have options. It is possible to swap the stock weight with both lighter and heavier options, making the head mass adjustable from 179 to 196.5 grams.

Weight is a significant contributor to MOI, so it’s reasonable to expect that PXG’s Ultra Lite won’t challenge the standard Black Ops in the total MOI category, but PXG says their Ultra Lite offers both speed and forgiveness (because pretty much everything does these days).

The rest of the story aligns with other Black Ops designs, including the proprietary AFM (advanced face material) technology and carbon fiber crown and body.

A different PXG

Make of it what you will but I suppose you can slot Black Ops Ultra Light alongside the new Wildcat family as evidence of an evolving PXG. Once the industry most premium-priced among semi-mainstream products, the company appears to be reinventing itself as the everyman golf brand – at least among the non-discount set.

PXG’s prices aren’t the highest in the industry anymore, but they’re no longer the lowest. PXG is now a competitively priced brand with an expanding catalog that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a scratch golfer looking to push into plus territory, an aging golfer looking to recapture lost speed, or a true beginner looking for something a bit more sophisticated than the average box set, PXG has something for you – and you might even be able to afford it.

The PXG Black Ops Ultra Lite Driver is available in 10.5- and 11.5 degrees. While PXG doesn’t have stock shafts per se, for those looking to absolutely minimize weight, it offers shafts as light as 40-grams (Project X Cypher 2.0).
