It Was A Masters To Forget For LIV Golf

Near the end of Sunday’s Masters broadcast, CBS announcer Jim Nantz fired a subtle shot at LIV.

“And the top five are all PGA Tour players,” Nantz said as Scottie Scheffler approached the 16th tee.

It would stay that way as Scheffler dominated everyone en route to a four-stroke victory over rookie sensation Ludvig Aberg. The rest of the top five was rounded out by Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood.

Those five players, who are some of the more adamant PGA Tour supporters, were among the pack battling for the green jacket over the weekend.

Meanwhile, LIV had a Masters to forget. The league’s 13 players combined to go 82-over as five LIV members (Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Adrian Meronk, Charl Schwartzel and Sergio Garcia) missed the cut.

It was particularly jarring how Johnson shot 78-79 (13-over) while only making one birdie across two rounds of uninspiring golf. He looks like a player bored with pro golf—by his own admission, he doesn’t practice at the same rate he once did. DJ might be the first casualty of a player who took the money and has no more motivation to be a relevant golfer.

Bryson DeChambeau opened with a 7-under 65 to take an early lead but slowly bled from there and never had a serious shot to win (although it was great to have him back in the mix). He co-led the LIV contingent at 2-under, earning a T6 finish alongside Cam Smith.

Tyrrell Hatton (T9) and Patrick Reed (T12) were the only others in the top 20 among the 89 contestants.

Joaquin Niemann (T22) continued his mediocre major record that has yet to include a top-10 finish. Much worse than Niemann was how Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka (T45) were total non-factors. Both players had won majors a year ago.

LIV didn’t fare any better outside the competition. Front man Greg Norman made himself look even more like a fool (difficult to do) when he bought a Masters badge and tried to get Rory McIlroy’s attention multiple times during tournament rounds, according to No Laying Up. He then posted this message to Instagram:

“It was humbling, moving and I was taken back by your words of encouragement – ‘thank you for what you have done for golf’ … ‘don’t stop’ … ‘love LIV’ and the one that got to me personally and emotionally – ‘welcome back.’

“My right hand is sore from shaking hands with each and every one of you as well as the hugs given to so many. Golf is golf and on the hallowed grounds of Augusta National healthy competition (which is the bedrock of us) resonated. Thank you all for the 3 days of incredible and touching memories!”

Draw your own conclusions. Do you think Masters patrons were thanking Norman for creating unprecedented division in pro golf? If that is true, I might be able to enter the Masters next year and beat Scheffler.

It smacks of someone desperate for attention, which is perfectly in line with Norman’s personality.

LIV did get a win when PGA Tour star Wyndham Clark threw a weird punch at LIV’s 54-hole format. Clark promptly missed the cut the day after his comments, only getting to play 36 holes for the tournament.

However, that was about all that could be celebrated this past weekend. It was a far cry from the 2023 Masters when Koepka, Phil Mickelson and Reed were all in contention.

Rahm, who was with the PGA Tour at the time, won that Masters. A month later, Koepka claimed the PGA Championship. The major championship season was a success as LIV players were contending in all four of the game’s biggest events.

The major momentum doesn’t have the same feel this time around. Rahm and Koepka, who represent the best chance for a LIV player to grab another major this year, are not playing particularly well.

LIV does have four of the top 13 players in the world according to Data Golf, and there are other key players in their stable, such as Koepka and Smith, beyond that point.

It will be interesting to track whether the Masters was a one-off for LIV stars struggling or if there is a long-term trend of players losing focus now that LIV is approaching its two-year anniversary. Will there be any loss of motivation?

We’ll have to wait and see.

The unprecedented division in golf doesn’t come from LIV, but from the answer to LIV by the existing “main tours”… They don’t ban “their” players to play on other tours (the PGA tour players are frequently on DP world tour events, and vice versa, all of them play from time to time on various Asian tours), why do it specifically here? Because they were afraid that their old model was at risk, that they would have to share a bigger slice of the money with the players, that they would have to work to get viewers, players, sponsors? I don’t really know but the reaction was weird, violent, involved biasing the media and the fans in a very polarizing way (“hey, the money is Saudi”… Well, nobody said anything about the DP world tour money being Qatari, if I remember well, or some of the money of the NBA being from China, and so on…. plus, about 1/3 of the world would complain “the money is American” in a disgusted way, if asked ).
Regardless, the “great divide” isn’t bad, it actually brings competition between tours for fans, players and venues, therefore yielding in time a better product. Now, some refuse the competition, I understand that, as not everyone can be a winner or a top dog without putting in the effort.

LIV had a much smaller percentage of players playing the Masters. Only 13 LIV players played in the Masters, 8 LIV players made the cut, and 3 LIV players in the top 10. That is pretty good.

Let’s see since author is anti-LIV it’s strictly his opinion. My opinion is LIV had 3 players in the top 10 which represents 23% of the number of LIV players invited. Now the other 7 which play on the PGA Tour represents 10% of the PGA Tour players invited. So this author in my opinion is full of malarkey !!!

The winds made the course really tough in rounds 2 and 3, stuff the LIV guys (who usually play non-major /resort courses that aren’t set up to be tough tests) weren’t used to. The way the PGA sets up the PGA championship (they don’t want to embarrass the club pros, who aren’t quite Tour caliber), the LIV guys will do better, because the course setup is going to be easier. They will probably stink it up at the US Open.

Given the number of long term PGA tour members who missed the cut or failed to play under par, the comment applies equally well to them. Playing a very windy course, I am very disappointed in the level of these guys in a gusty wind environment. They should play in harsher conditions, windy, rainy, muddy, in the winter… Play Carnoustie by a gusty, chilly, rainy November day for proper harsh conditions… not only parkland courses in summery calm conditions.

Everyone attacks LIV. Yet PGA players don’t make that much little when looking at other highly compensated sports. There is this obsession of this topic. Describe to me how it is fair that NBA athletes, which the league is worth $10.2Bill the top 40 athletes, make a little over $30 million a year. Meanwhile, the PGA worth $1.2Bill in the top 40 makes a little over $1Mill guaranteed and has to pay for their caddies and travel.
Meanwhile, good old Jay Monahan’s compensation for 2022 was $18.6 million in 2022, which is $3 million higher than Scottie’s compensation in 2023 after all his winnings. The following person down (#2) is Clark with $7.95Mill. You can hate LIV all you want. They are the reason that athletes are now generating money. Imagine paying out of pocket for all these tournaments, being the top 200 golfer in the world, and barely breaking even at the end of the year. LIV did a favor for the PGA and made the purses extensively larger. It blows my mind that everyone is okay with Jay making a more guaranteed salary than the best-performing athletes in the league. How about you describe why Jay deserves a higher guaranteed salary than Scottie? You are so disconnected from what it is like living in a player’s shoes that are trying to enter into the PGA and make enough salary to make a living. Instead, there is this obsession with Saudis and “bad” money. They invest in 1000s of places. For some reason, there is this massive obsession with the PGA. Get off your soap box the PIF have nearly $1Trill they’re not going to dig a hole and go away with that money. How about you start rooting for them to help the players make a better living? A higher salary will attract more competition and improve the sport for the athletes that deserve it who are working their butt off day and night.
