I’ve Worn More Than 125 Golf Shoes: Here are Five I Won’t Wear Again

A few weeks ago, I wrote about my five favorite golf shoes. When you’ve tried as many as I have, it’s fairly easy to find a few that you gravitate towards. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are always a few that just don’t jive with your vibe.

Whatever the reason, there are just some golf shoes I can’t get along with. Call me a snob, sure, but when you’ve got a finite amount of closet space, certain shoes have to hit the donation pile.

Here are five golf shoes I won’t be wearing again.*

*This list reflects only my personal opinion, and is in no way related to Most Wanted shoe testing.

1. FootJoy Premiere Series

This may come as a shocker but I don’t find the FootJoy Premiere Series to be comfortable. While I absolutely love the way some of the limited stuff looks, it’s just too stiff to be something I’d wear on the course.

Maybe, just maybe, I’ll break out the Harris Tweed pair the next time I go to Scotland … but that’s about it. Give me comfort or give me death. (I have nothing against the HyperFlex or Traditions, though. I could wear those!)

2. NIKE Air Zoom Infinity Tour 2

This is another one that I love cosmetically but just can’t get along with. Despite my affinity for the AIR unit, the pod is so big that it starts to wear on the ball of my feet. Not to mention that the shoe still fits a little narrow.

This one is better left on my shelf or, if I can get a pair in the bright orange “electric” colorway, I’ll keep them in a display case. Should I write a full review on this pair? Let me know!

3. Duca Del Cosma Bernardo

Are you sensing a theme? I’m typically not a fan of the dress-style golf shoes. These traditional beauties may look snazzy but they’re stiff as can be. I just can’t bring myself to wear a shoe that requires this much break-in time before it’s not painful.

Not for nothing, some of Duca Del Cosma’s other offerings are less stiff. Still, not a fan.

4. G/FORE G/18

While I’m actually a fan of G/FORE’s GALLIVAN2R, the new G/18 just isn’t something I’ll wear again. It’s super-chunky and bulky, which makes the shoe feel clunky to walk in. While I like the polarizing design and fun colors, it was an easy one to kick from the rotation.

5. SQAIRZ

This one is more cosmetically motivated than anything else. I actually think SQAIRZ are fairly comfortable, have good traction and stability. I just can’t look past the square toe. Rather than focus on my golf ball, it’s impossible not to look down at a shape that isn’t “normal”.

I’m upset that I’ve slept on ASICS go shoes for this long. Super impressed with the pair I just purchased.

Footjoy of recent are noisy shoes. I have 5 pairs that “squeak” when I walk. I will never buy another pair of footjoys!

      Love the comments.
I miss metal spikes. The bite with the turf cannot be matched with today’s plastic.
And the sound of metal cleats I miss almost as much as the sound of persimmon.

My feet are wider than the normal size but often not wide enough for “wide” sized golf shoes. I really like Cuater The Ringer spiked golf shoes. They are stable and comfortable. Waterproofing and materials have held up well too.

Good article Connor! I like my Sqairz Shoes, I know what you mean about the square toe, but it no longer bothers me. I’ve got my own shoe inserts that are used all the time, dealing with Plantar Fasciitis and the inserts make the shoes very comfortable. Playing golf in the Florida mornings, with the fairway dew, I want a waterproof shoe when walking. I’ll keep my Sqairz & probably order another pair by the end of the year.

They would be good for alignment. I am anal when it comes to foot alignment so I don’t hook.

MY wife and I both wear SQAIRZ most of the time, especially if it’s a Tournament or if I’m playing for money. Reason is that they help you stay centered and the comfort is “TOP OF CLASS”. Still wear fooyjoys occasionally which I grew up with and they are good too, but not as solid as SQAIRZ. Footjoy has the name; however, Sqairz has the science and the best comfort.

I bought a pair of Squairz a couple of years ago, worst shoes I ever purchased. Maybe it is my foot but they didn’t fit correctly, bulky, stiff and heavy. I have tried various brands but keep coming back to Adidas.

Foot Joy premiers are the best shoe for stability there is right now (exactly why you don’t like them) fit them properly and use orthotics and you will be as anchored to use your legs to the max. You will get maximum connection to the ground and max clubhead speed.

It’s why Tiger chose them with his leg and foot problems

You won’t know what your power is until you follow my orthopedic surgeon advice

      Your call or your loss

With the orthotics they are very comfortable to walk in

The Squairz are the most uncomfortable golf shoe I have ever worn. My toes were always pushing up against the front of the shoe. Any body who wears a size 9 and wants a pair of the toe cruncher can have mine for free.

Started playing golf about five years ago. The Adidas Tech Response 2.0 is absolutely the worst. First day I wore them I got blisters and have not worn them since. Don’t recommend them at all.

That’s the part I don’t understand about the fancy dress golf shoes – sacrificing comfort and performance just to look cool on the cart, not to mention paying a premium over other best-in-class shoes.

Every time I see someone with those foot joys, I wonder how they aren’t covered in blisters.

Bought a pair of FJ Flex spikeless shoes on eBay when I started golfing – they were new-in-box and I “scored” them for $30. I don’t get it. Literal Walmart-tier shoe quality. I replaced them with the $35 Nike spikeless shoes from Burlington and they are great.

I’ll probably just grab some Altra trail runners next.

I have 2 pairs of trail runners. A pair of Rockport XCS that are really waterproof for spring golf when I’m slogging thru saturated fairways and a pair of Saucony Excursion TR16’s that are cool and very light weight for summer and fall. I’ve been using them for 6 months and they show virtually no wear at all and I expect them to last at least 2 years and probably can make it to 4. I play close to 100 rounds a year and over half I walk 18 holes. My total cost for the pair was $140 plus tax. I’m done wearing golf shoes. These are the most comfortable, stable shoes I’ve ever worn on a golf course.

I was all in on the G/Fore Gallivan2r’s until I realized I was losing traction during the swing. And of course, these are the version without the replaceable spikes so it’s like $200 down the drain. It’s too bad since they are both stylish and comfortable but getting burned like that doesn’t make me feel good about buying another pair. Back to soft spikes and Adidas, for now.

I know that shoes are a very individual thing, but I have to say that the Olukai golf shoes crushed my feet. I’ve had good luck with their other footwear, but those just about ruined me.

I would happily trade in all my golf shoes; for a pair that fit my 14 narrow with a triple A heel. Hell even a 14 narrow at a reasonable price.

True Links OG 1.2 or Feel. The only shoes I’ve found that the toebox even remotely fits. I’d like to try Sqairz sometime for spikes.

I got a pair of Sqairz this year. Very comfortable and seem to help me set my foot balance. I set my personal best a couple of weeks ago (not necessarily giving credit to the shoes but …).

I just ordered a second pair. I’ll be getting rid of my other shoes.

I have all of the shoes you reviewed . I agree that the FootJoy Premiers take a while to break in but once you do, I can walk comfortably in them , I really like my new Tweeds they are classy and I have not broken them in yet. I only wear my Duca’s when I am in a cart , they are unique and stylish but they are hard to break in. I also have a pair of their lower profile shoes which are soft and ready to walk in on day one. I never buy Nike, to me they are not built very good and they look like gym shoes . Totally agree on Squariz shoes, I don’t own them because of their looks. Also agree on the new G-Fore hunky shoes you mention, I own 7 other pairs of G-Fore’s that are great , unfortunately everyone is catching on to them and they are not as unique . Stubart makes a solid shoe, and the best shoe ever made ( they don’t make them the same today) is the Adidas 360 . The older models are stylish, solid, great traction, comfortable , and cool looking .

I’ve realized after reading a lot of these shoe or clothing type reviews that everything fits everyone different and comfort is relative.

I’ve gone through probably 5-6 pairs of shoes the past few years trying to find something that works for me. I get blisters fairly easy so I have been trying a number of different shoes.
I’ve liked the sneaker type shoes but I’ve found the durability to be lacking and the cloth material interior to deteriorate too quickly.

I ended up buying FJ premier this year and they are the most comfortable shoes I’ve had recently and the full leather/suede interiors stay dry and don’t rub. (And I prefer the more traditional look to the sneaker type shoes anyway)

Walked 90 holes in 4 days with some rain in Scotland in them recently and they did great with zero blisters and feet felt great. I was shocked and have worn them ever since.

Make sure to get the right size also. I found that I actually had slightly narrow feet and went down half a size from normal to get a better fit. FJ offers a ton of different sizes/widths so I was able to try different kinds and get the perfect fit. I’ll be sticking with those for a while.

If there’s one thing to take away from this, it’s exactly that! Everyone is different. Just because I don’t get along with these shoes doesn’t mean they’re bad, it means that my foot is different than yours!

Well I had a message I was typing but your website crashed🤨! But the shorter version is that the Big Shies manufacturers need more wide and extra wide shoe designs like Squairz, doesn’t need to be square toes you don’t like, but my Podiatrist designed orthopedic inserts to support my foot the correct way and I had very limited options at the big golf retailers. Even regular athletic casual companies need to expand options beyond New Balance and Squairz to allow clients to get the best performance for their game from their feet! The doctors believe most golfers don’t get the optimal shoe design to help their game and allow their feet to not hurt and feel squeezed.

I own over 40 pairs of FootJoy golf shoes. All 10 1/2 extra wide. Fortunately, all fit well right out of the box. Surprised to hear others have issues with fit.

Which model of Footjoy are you having success? Do you have orthopedic designed inserts? I did find one model Hyperflex that does provide the width for me to use my inserts.

I bought a pair of FJ shoes last year which made my feet hurt. After complaining, I returned them for a credit toward a more expensive FJ pair. The new shoes hurt my feet, so now they sit in my closet.
