NBC Tabs Chamblee As Lead U.S. Open Analyst, Announces Commercial Cuts

Brandel Chamblee will be on the call for next month’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Chamblee, one of the most polarizing voices in the game, will join a four-man booth for NBC, Josh Carpenter of Sports Business Journal reports. He will be joined by play-by-play man Dan Hicks, Brad Faxon and Mike Tirico.

The lead analyst position has been a revolving door for NBC, a network that has come under fire for coverage struggles and mismanagement of a heavy commercial load.

Paul Azinger was not renewed after a four-year run as lead analyst, leading NBC to try out a rotation of analysts throughout 2024. Chamblee, Faxon, Kevin Kisner, Notah Begay III and Luke Donald have all been involved during the audition process.

Kisner appeared to have a leg up on the competition after getting strong reviews early in the season. However, he opted out of covering the U.S. Open, citing a previous commitment.

“He wants to be a golfer and wants to focus on his golf game,” said Sam Flood, NBC Sports Executive Producer and President of Production. “When he’s ready to stop playing golf, we’ll have a conversation.”

Chamblee, known for his extensive work on Golf Channel, will take that role for the time being. Love it or hate it, Chamblee is an educated voice who isn’t afraid to let it fly. He will force some to reach for the mute button but Chamblee is an upgrade over Azinger, in the opinion of many.

That news was far from the only update NBC had when it comes to its golf coverage.

Roger Maltbie and Gary Koch—longtime NBC commentators who recently returned for the 50th edition of The Players Championship—are back in the loop for the U.S. Open. Maltbie and Koch were so warmly received during The Players that NBC decided to bring them back for all four days.

It does feel a little out of place to hold onto Maltbie and Koch while also talking about the broadcast getting younger. With the exception of adding Smylie Kaufman to the mix—a solid addition—NBC has struggled to inject youth or different voices into its talent lineup. Meanwhile, CBS has enjoyed breakout performances from Trevor Immelman, Colt Knost, Amanda Balionis and others.

Maltbie and Koch are wonderful but NBC seems lost between two ideas here. I would still like to see an overhaul of their crew, getting younger talent such as Kisner involved.

It will be Donald in the lead chair for the Open Championship. The European Ryder Cup captain was on air for two PGA Tour events this year.

NBC also has the Olympics and Presidents Cup but has yet to announce plans for those events.

Golf fans will also be interested to know that NBC is promising a commercial cut. On Thursday and Friday afternoons during the prime viewing window for top players, the network will reduce its hourly commercial breaks from six to four. It will do the same on Saturday and Sunday in addition to the commercial-free final hour of Sunday’s coverage sponsored by Rolex.

Interestingly, NBC is also promising five additional shots per hour due to having more promotional content baked into the broadcast. Are they MGS readers? Because this has been on my wish list for quite some time.

“We can be promoting ‘The Voice’ right as Scottie Scheffler’s about to hit a shot from the fairway, that way we don’t leave the moment,” Flood said.

Amid reports of cost-cutting at Comcast/NBC—and golf TV ratings having a horrid 2024—it will be fascinating to watch whether this is lip service or an earnest effort to push the product forward.

Golf on TV has a long way to go but we will take any positive momentum we can get.

Keep complaining, everyone!

I will watch the US Open only from the DVR. If I have to hear one minute of Brandel’s uninformed crap I’ll tune to a soccer match. It couldn’t be worse!

I’m amazed at the varied reactions to Brandel Chamblee’s selections. Golfers on MGS have such different reactions to the same person. I guess the same thing could be said of the previous lead analyst Paul Azinger. I enjoy reading peoples’ comments.

I’m going to skull a drink every time Chamblee mentions LIV whilst players are on course.

I’ll be sober at the end of the day’s play.

Love the Chamblee choice, he will be prepared and spot on with his analysis, best part is he pisses off all the livers, all 50 of their corrupt followers, that is pure gold.

I’m loving it that Brandel is going to be the lead analyst… I think Azinger was terrible. Brandel might be “polarizing” as you’ve characterized him but he certainly seems to speak his mind and doesn’t seem to fear mixing it up…. I find that incredibly refreshing in the overly homogenized culture of professional golf. And to be clear, I find absolutely nothing refreshing or admirable in this LIV circus so please don’t mistake or confuse my admiration of Chamblee’s style for a desire to turn professional golf into a “green grass WWE”….

Totally agree with George M. Need controversy of Chamblee and a shot clock. The boring announcers (Immelman and Nance contrary to article) and delay of the players is ridiculous. 45 seconds after it is your turn, time to hit shot. Cut out long conversation w caddy. Stepping away for wind is stupid when have to play out of divots in middle of fairway.

      Good choice.
Most networks don’t understand Golf, they understand business and appearance. Example – golf always needs an analyst with a non-American accent (CBS). Kenny would never make the cut.
      Brandel’s no slouch.

The last thing I want in golf coverage, particularly a major, is a bunch of crappy human interest stories…Nantz… give me an interesting guy throwing a bunch of crap instead. That would be Chamblee. Love the hire.

Brandel is great and nobody outworks him in preparation. Zinger was really a disappointment. Super happy to see Roger Maltbie and Gary Koch returning. I really enjoy listening to them. I like Kiz and think he will be a great fit once he decides his playing career is done.

Chamblee can be on the touchy side of some of the pros, and that’s just what we need. Too much praise is handed out by the announcers right now…I want criticism when they make bad swings or judgements. McCord was great even if he upset Augusta with the “greens have been bikini waxed” or similar comment! Where is Feherty these days anyway? He always had great comments. Notah Begay is absolutely dull for my taste. Balionis is eye candy and Colt is wonderful with his wit!

Like Johnny Miller, Chamblee isn’t afraid to criticize bad plays or decisions by golfers. Announcers who just don’t want to offend a golfer don’t offer much perspective. Faldo was an example of seldom pointing out the errors of golfers. I like the Chamblee choice.

I long for the days of McCord and his era. Insightful in terms of strategy mixed with humor. He was over the top sometimes AND he knew it. It was his schtick. Listening to todays announcers AND I include Immelman and for some reason Begay who’s always whispering. NOT every player is “the best ball striker” “the best distance control” “the best putter” “The best driver”. That crap gets REAL OLD. I don’t like chamblee but MAYBE, I hope, some straight forward honesty might be refreshing

Just go with Fax, his delivery is very good and he explains the swing and putting better than the others AND he’s already in the booth. He doesn’t have a major- so what? You learn from Fax if you listen, Zinger was just a self promoter.

Since when does an announcer prevent someone from watching their favorite sport? Howard Cossell showed you that ratings don’t suffer when you have a polarizing announcer. C’mon MGS – you’re getting SOFT with this nonsense.

Should have kept Azinger, but Chamblee is a good choice because he speaks his mind, usually accurately. Tirico can balance if needed, and it might since LIV players will be involved

Immelman? Only because he has a green jacket and a foreign accent. He did have a tough act to follow. CBS could have given that chair to Finch while letting Trevor get some seasoning. Much better chemistry between Finch and Nantz.

That is the most tone-deaf explanation/excuse I have ever heard. a confession of 6 commercial breaks is ridiculous, so going to 4 even longer commercial breaks will equate to the same amount of ad time of half the hour, and to interrupt a shot with a “not-so-subtle’ ad/promo DURING PLAY? Middle fingers to corporate media, seriously. Here’s your Big Mac sir, I just made sure to spit on it first
