Nike’s Vapor Fly Blackout Driver is Just the Beginning

Nike Golf’s run of purposeful weirdness continues with the announcement of the new Stay Hidden. Be Seen. collection.

This latest release of unusual apparel (and gear) is a celebration of sorts for the 30th anniversary of Nike golf’s foray into the golf apparel marketplace (hence the NG86 on the hat and shirts).

“Three decades on, the ‘Stay Hidden. Be Seen’ pack celebrates this historic year. Taking inspiration from the past in order to launch golf style into the future, it infuses performance-led garments — a polka dot packable hooded jacket, a Nike AW77 Crew, Nike Legacy cap, washed polo and short, and t-shirts with various designs — with a healthy dose of attitude.”

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you that future.

Fashionistas, should one mix camo-print and polka-dots? I’m going to need a ruling on this.

A Black Driver

To supplement (Nike’s word) the new gear, the company will also introduce a Limited Edition all-black (matte crown) Blackout versions of its Vapor Fly and Vapor Fly Pro drivers.

For those of you with Nike iDs, you can unlock the fun now for $350.

The Larger Metaphor

Other than the whole camo/polka-dot thing, there’s not too much to get riled up about here, and frankly, I think the black with bold print is actually going to go over well.

For me, the most intriguing part of all of this is the name. Stay Hidden. Be Seen. I think that’s a fair assessment of Nike’s updated approach to the golf industry. It’s a bit hard to describe, but I get the sense the company is content to lurk in the shadows while at the same time making a lot of noise in ways that only Nike can.

We’ve discussed at length Nike’s failure to make a meaningful impact on the equipment side of the industry, and while I’m reasonably certain that’s not going to change overnight, I do get the sense that Nike Golf has found its place in golf and is starting to hit its stride. If it’s able to run at full speed like it has in other industries, don’t expect Nike to say hidden for long.

The Stay Hidden. Be Seen collection will be available May 7 on Nike.com and at select Nike retailers.

I’m not a Nike fan at all but I must admit, the driver and all the accessories look awesome. I may have to rethink my disdain for Nike.

These designs represent the past and not the future. Camo has been done and black drivers over past few years by both niche / edgy brands and mainstream OEM like Nike.

I gamed the Nike VR TW Blades for a long time and loved them. Unfortunately I am no longer able to play 5 times a week so I switched to a CB. Nike has been making quality clubs for a while now. Just your Ping, Titleist, Callaway, Mizuno and Taylor Made fanboys all think Nike is garbage. I intended on buying Nike’s this time around when I switched to CB’s but after demoing countless brands and shafts variations. Bridgestone J15CB’s with Nippon Modus 3 125 shafts were the fit for me.

i agree with the other comment, I never see nike stuff on the course. the only time i saw nike in a bag was when i played with a former college player who got it all free from nike (and he still paid for his own Ping I-series driver!!)

I’ve seen plenty of Nike golf clubs in golf bags over the years. I have several friends playing their drivers, fairways and irons. I guess it depends where you are. Nike seems to be doing very well down here in Florida.

Still have a VR Pro LE i take out once in awhile, but I wouldn’t say Nike is hitting their stride, I rarely see ANY Nike stuff from others out on the course. I would also say their past forged offerings are superior in looks and feel to their past 2 lines. You can get brand new previous model VR Pro’s on ebay for a song, which IMO are better than what they have now

You can say that about almost any brand’s old models. There are plenty of Nike clubs on the courses I frequent down here in Florida. Perhaps their popularity it depends from market to market.

John Duval I worked in the golf industry as a buyer for a number of years on the retail side. You couldn’t give Nike stuff away even if you deeply discounted it. I’m not saying there stuff isn’t good, heck I had an all-Nike bag for years, but in the overall marketplace they aren’t highly thought of
