“NEW GOLF TOUR CHALLENGES PGA TOUR HEAD ON!”

MGA (Modern Golf Tour) sets its sites on making the game more entertaining to watch.

This press release title is a fictitious one…well it is at least for the time being…because it might not be all that far fetched if the PGA doesn’t do something and something fast about the state of the game. More and more golfers are leaving the game for other sports and more and more viewers are turning their tvs to different stations when golf comes on. Why? Well…lots of reasons…but one of the main reasons their turning the station is because it just flat out is not entertaining. There are too many choices now…you have hundreds of stations all trying to vie for our attention and golf is losing out.

They are leaving the door wide open for someone else to come in and steal their thunder. And for those that don’t think it can happen…think again. Because it can and will if the PGA doesn’t open their eyes and ears. You might remember…it was not that long ago that 2 of the other major sports leagues, the (NBA & NFL) were not only challenged but also beatin up by a couple of new and upcoming challengers, the (AFL & ABA). And where they got beat and beat badly was in the entertainment aspect of their sport…and we all know this is one of the major areas the PGA Tour needs to improve on if they have any hopes of gaining back the golfers they are losing week after week.

“What would happen to the PGA Tour tomorrow if Tiger got injured and could never play golf again?”

Anyone that says that the ABA and AFL didn’t change their sports leagues style and popularity forever would be crazy. Before the ABA their was no dunk contest…hell there wasn’t even a term known as dunk in basketball before the ABA. No 3-Pointer either and the All-Star game didn’t even exist. In Football the AFL followed a similar path to success…they simply made an already great game even better…simply by making it more entertaining. It just took a couple guys sitting around asking themselves…”How can we make this game better?” to get this started and forever change the path and history of these sports. And their is ample opportunity to make the golf game better in many peoples opinion.

But…the founders of these new leagues were smart…yes they tried a lot of crazy promotions and ideas that didn’t work…but…they did make the games more entertaining while not disturbing the true traditions of the game…and this is important. They just made it more entertaining to watch and even more fun to play. And if you think about it there is much more wrong with the game of golf then the NBA had at the time. At the time the ABA just made it more fun and they became a success…because at the time that is all the game was really missing. Golf has a lot of areas that could be improved if a new league felt like challenging the PGA Tour.

Some Of Their Challenges:

  • Entertainment Level…Lacking Severely!
  • Not As Many Golfers Playing The Sport (or) Taking Up The Game
  • Not As Many Courses Being Built (Fewer Courses = Less Access To New Golfers)
  • Too Expensive For Many Who Want To Start The Game
  • Rely Way To Much On Tiger For Their Success
  • Time It Takes To Play
  • Money It Takes To Get Started Playing (Equipment)
  • USGA Hampering Growth (In Many Golfers Eyes)
  • and many more…

Just think…what would happen to the PGA Tour tomorrow if Tiger got injured and was told he could never play golf again? They would be in DEEP DEEP trouble. As a matter of fact you would see see start to crumble almost instantly. And in a matter of just a couple years it would be off the air almost completely. You think sponsors are leaving the game at an alarming pace now…wait until Tiger isn’t playing at there event next year…they will drop like flies! Think the sport has a problem bringing new players to the game now? Wait until Tiger the only guy who does show some emotion on the course is gone and young kids have no one to relate to on tour…those kids that he used to influence into picking up the game will decide to pick up a glove or a football instead.

Of the major sports in the US…golf is the only one that relies entirely on one man for its success. And that is because the other sports have learned how diversify themselves by learning how to ENTERTAIN viewers. There is not much better of a nap then on laying in bed watching golf with the windows cracked the fan on and the sound of kids playing in the street. The whisper of the announcer seems to be like a security blanket to an infant…it puts you right a sleep. I mean I love golf…but there IS MAJOR room for improvement when it comes to the entertainment level of the sport. And what about if Tiger decides to take the week off…forget about it…snoozefest!

Things That Could Make It More Entertaining (But Not Ruin The Game)

  1. Skills Competitions – Seeing Tiger…Phil and the other almost equally talented pros out there showing off skills they cant use during a competitive round would be incredible for golfers to see. To be able to see a guy do something that made your jaw drop so you and everyone else immediately went out to the course to try would be great for golf. Remember when Tiger juggles the golf ball on a wedge?? That caught on…just a LITTLE bit.
  2. ThrowBack Equipment and Clothing – I think they (PGA) would get huge ratings or if another tour challenged them if they had the golfers dress up and play with the gear from 50 years ago. Wouldn’t you watch to see them all have to play in 3-Piece suits and wooden shafts?
  3. Play Under The Lights – I think some more tourneys under the lights would make people watch a few more tournaments.
  4. Final Round NOT on Sunday – golf has enough to compete with…so why not try to end rounds on a different day then Sunday so you don’t have to compete with the NFL.
  5. Local Competitors vs Pros – maybe it would spark some interest to see one guy at every event from the local course get to try and compete head to head against the pros. Some of these locals know these courses back and forth and might be interesting to see if they can compete.
  6. Some Cheering Please – It was nice to see how passionate the fans are at events like Bethpage Black. Yeah Yeah i know the old schoolers will say they were rude. And maybe they were. But man it was refreshing to see. I would love to see one tournament where golfers could get heckled and yelled at just to see how much of a difference it would make. Never know the next tour to challenge the PGA might just try it…and I think people would like it.
  7. Some Fun Please – everyone likes it when they see Tiger do a fist pump after draining a long putt or YE Yang throwing his bag over his head after a huge victory…but most PGA golfers never show any emotion. I think if another tour started and their players started showing more of their emotions then golfers would begin to relate to them a little more. Why do you think Daly is such a fan favorite?

With viewership down…sponsorships down…new golfer numbers down…I seriously think the PGA could be challenged by another tour if that tour did it the right way. Hell you might even see some of the top 50 guys migrate over just to have more fun and be a part of more exciting atmosphere. You might actually see some Top1 10 guys that have made all the money they could ever need make the move just to feel what it is like again to get goose bumps from playing a sport they love. I mean ask yourself…when is the last time you got goosebumps from playing or watching the game of golf?

I really like the idea of local vs. pro competition. Many other types of shows are going to things like this (Pros v. Joes, Bobby Flay Throwdown, etc.) I think that the audience likes watching the everyman compete. Maybe the local has some insight into the course that the pro doesn’t.

I also like greenfee’s comment about offering the viewer more information on the player. Tie in GPS, wind info, some data mining, etc. NASCAR seems to really have something going with their “follow your driver plus telemetry and info” idea.

Grreat post but it’s interesting that your article starts as a critique of The PGA Tour but quickly seems to take the view that the tour and the game of golf are one and the same thing.

Golf isn’t about the elite it’s about you and me and our mates out in the fresh air hitting a ball into a hit in the least number of shots. Full stop! It’s addictive, one good shot makes us want to come back and try it again, to improve, do better next time and before you know it 37 years have gone by (well in my case anyway :-) I started young, honest!!!

I agree with you, though, about televised golf but I think that says more about the coverage than the sport itself. I’m in the UK and whilst BBC coverage has it’s critics 11 hours continuous golf (no ads) of The Open is fantastic. SKY coverage is good but the ads are annoying and how you US viewers put up with the banal commentary and constant updates prior and after commercial breaks I don’t know. Talk about dumbing down!

As a viewer I want to see exactly the shot a player is faced with, yardages, wind direction, club selection etc and informed explanation of how he will execute the shot. Let’s face it the pace of play is so slow and there are enough TV people inside the ropes to facilitate it. If the TV picture “flattens” the topography let’s see a digital interpretation. I want to be in the player’s shoes!

The PGA needs to do away with Q school. If a person can get the sponsorship or pay the entry fee, they should be allowed to compete. Let’s admit to the facts, Q school was created as a means to keep the disadvantage from competeing on the tour. Another thing that the PGA can do to generate intrest is to take the top 30 players in the FedEx Cup compete in match play. The winner would then be that years champion. Heres another ideal, what about a three or four televised amatuer events, flighted with regional play ins.

You are right about the Q School. Since the Tour went to the all exempt format, it has shut thousands of talented players out of the game, and created this monolithic, faceless group of players that treat the whole thing as if it’s their own closed-shop union. For some of these guys it’s not about winning, but playing safe enough to stay in the top 125 every year. I can’t say as I blame them either, since 91 of the top 125 money winners last year earned over a million dollars for the season, but it just makes the game boring when you see the same players week after week. The only time they seem to go all out is in the last few events of the year, when they know they have to make more money, either to bolster their standing in the top 125, or to play their way into exempt status. The only tourney I really got into this year was the Disney, since there were a lot of guys around the 125th spot fighting for their lives out there.

In the old days only the top 60 money winners were exempt for the next year, and tournament winners were exempt for the next two seasons. Also, if you weren’t on the exempt list and missed the cut after the Friday round, you had to travel to the next site to compete in the Monday qualifier for that event. If you made the cut, you not only were safe for the weekend, but you were also exempted into the next tournament. Usually the top half of the Monday qualifying scores would make the main field, so you would see a lot of new local and unknown talent from week to week. With the exempt format Monday qualifiers are a thing of the past and the game is worse for it. Local talent just doesn’t have a chance to enter their local “Open”, unless they are good buddies with the tournament director and can wheedle a sponsors exemption out of them. Even the USGA has gotten into the act by placing more restrictions on qualifying for their championships. Giving byes on qualifying rounds to the tour players kind of kills the spirit of the “Open” championship concept. They should be made to compete at every stage of qualifying, just like Joe the construction guy, who just happens to be a talented player.

We’ve had the all exempt tour for about 30 years now, and even though the advances in equipment teaching and fitness have made scoring lower than ever, there just isn’t a sense of urgency or drama at most of the events staged today. Players know that if they can keep on finishing in the money every week they are likely to keep their tour card until they get old enough to join the seniors, where they will once again be exempt and insulated from having to compete with anyone outside their social circle or comfort zone, so they play conservatively and just keep ringing the register every week. IMO, there are probably only about 20 guys out there who actually care about winning more than cashing checks. The rest just plod along, shooting the same 2 under 70 rounds, week after week after week, year after year after year, not really caring if the ever get to be in the last group on Sunday or not. I stopped watching this crap years ago, except for the odd major, or tournaments like the Disney.

I will admit though that watching the Q school tournament on Golf Channel is pretty entertaining, if you like a lot of blood and guts golf. That thing has more wrecks than a NASCAR race. :)

Delete the FedEx Cup – I hate being tortured throughout the year hearing over-and-over about FeDeX Cup points. The idea sucks big time!

During the Tour Championship all I cared about was who would win the Trophy, I could care less about a cup.Phil won the trophy, Tiger, everyone knew he was the #1 golfer of the year, we didn’t need a cup to tell us that.

I was watching tennis, the U.S. Open and realized why I quit following it. John MacEnroe. I hated him when he played, but I admit I watched just to see him go off. I wanted him to lose, but most of all he brought entertainment to the sport. I have been involved in golf my entire life; I was the marketing guy at Cleveland Golf when we introducted the VAS irons. II was the one that decided to make the clubs purple. Everybody thought I was nuts but the results were we increased business over 25 million the next couple of years after we introduced them. Golf needs something to attract new and younger golfers in their 20’s. Just look how most of the PGA tour players dress. They all look like old guys!!!! (many fat olf guys) Have them loosen up, play faster and show some emotion. Would it kill players like Davis Love or Retief Gossen to at least smile once during a round? Give me players like Ian Poulter and John Daly that give the tour some pazazz! Get tough on slow play. I mean I lkie Sean O’Hare but I had to click to another channel when they showed him playing, he is sooooooo slow. It ruins the game!

Golf is about traditions keep that in mind. I have already seen the effect of allowing the redneck bunch on to the golf course, with their beer tee shirts and total disregard for the rules and the traditions of the sport. So keep it boring but don’t turn it into the same crap we see everywhere else in this country.

Hi Robert and welcome to MyGolfSpy…we appreciate you stopping by. But I would have to disagree with you on the “keep it boring” point. That is why less people are coming to the game and watching it. Because they feel it is “boring” There are ways to keep the traditions like we said in the article but still make it more entertaining.

Boring on a personal level, I enjoy a quite walk for 18 with my foursome. where it’s just me and the golf course. No yelling, club throwing golf cart racing beer swizzling drunks hacking up the green because they missed a putt they would never have made anyway. That my kinda of boring! As for the tour I just can’t picture the NASCAR crowd at Agusta I’ve been to both places and thats two worlds that can not collide. Golf is what it is, a very intellectual game played by people with brains and skill. Yet there are those who feel that Bush Wood clown golf is the way to go! believe it or not there are still a few traditions left worth saving.

      mygolfspy

Well if it is a tradition worth saving then they might want to do something to save it. Cause it is going down and going down fast.

I think you misunderstood a few points:
      1. When your playing with your friends you dont need ratings to keep the sport alive. But when you are on TV you do. So I agree I think that when you play with your buddies nothing should change.
      2. We never said we wanted it to be like Nascar…we said they could improve in the entertainment aspect of the sport WITHOUT hurting the traditions. The examples we gave in the piece didn’t say anything about Nascar, yelling, club throwing, etc.

How about some extreme golf or mini-golf on steroids? I always dreamed of an extreme course complete with well positioned concrete walls and landing areas, for that challenging richochette shot. The big boys would cringe having to blast from the rock trap. Why not have a 1000 yard mega-hole to test the stamina? Very interesting ideas MGA.

How about a par 3 night event? Eighteen/nine chances for aces would make a fun event. Knock-out events have always been hated by sponsors in case the big seeds don’t stay in – the answer only have the best players invited! Get the best juniors playing alongside Tiger and Phil in afoursome/fourball event. The PGA Tour only uses a small percentage of the games available. Formula 1 has never been the same since cars became more important than the drivers.

On another note I’d like to see a one shot penalty for players spitting on the course (I ‘m looking at Tiger and Jim Furyk to name but two).

Forgot what TV station uses this as their catch phrase, but it applies here: “Characters Welcome!”
We need exciting, fun loving, characters on the tour, not robots. I have been praying Daly could make a big come back, because he breaths life into events with his clothing, his every day player appeal.
There also needs to be some “fun tournaments” and everyone who is a PGA Pro on tour, should be used to push the sport in any way possible.

One more thing! Golf courses need to cater to kids and families more! I teach after school golf programs to 6-10 year olds, and courses in North San Diego, one of the golf meccas of the world, don’t even want the kids on their courses! Many golf teachers don’t even want to teach kids! That’s some bull sh**!

A great article with some great points. I think some of the suggestions are right on the mark. I just turned 27 years olds, so I was in high school when Tiger started his charge on tour. I watched golf gain a lot of popularity in that time. Leave it to the PGA to not take advantage of it. Golf needs to get cheaper to play, and the game needs to be more entertaining on TV. I love the idea of skills challenges, and I’ve always wanted to see the guys play a round where they play clubs from 50 years ago. The big boys running the PGA need to stop catering only to guys with erectile disfunction and swollen prostates.

The creativity on the PGA is lacking. The arrogance on the LPGA tour drove sponsors away. The LPGA star players had to basically perform a vote of no confidence for their leader to leave after upsetting sponcers. I believe a star promoter who thinks outside the box could have a shot at running a new tour. Do you remember when Greg Norman wanted to start a World Tour? They practically ran him out of golf. Greg retreated to making tons of dough with Cobra. I still remember Greg talking about allowing shorts on super hot days; well that only upset the powers that be over the tour. Really, we need new blood into the game of golf. Most of these guys are princes in their little kingdoms; they need they area of influence challenged.
